I get random results from computer to computer on my network wired or un-wired.

Why can you not appreciate the many other non ntl factors in this ...from pcs to port to software to virus's there are many things that could cause the connection to slow down.

I've no idea why ntl haven't updated the website or issued a press release. No company would offer a trial product to new customers. That would be insane. This is a full launch, albeit in a completely incoherent way. Are there any non-broadband customers out there who can check and see if they can purchase a 1,2 or 3mb package? I would bet a penny (not 100% confident here:) ) that they can't and only will be offered a 10MB package.

Just a note to anyone in the glasgow area.

You should be able to upgrade to the 10Mb from ntl.com as i've just done so,i was on 2Mb and upgraded tonight about 9.30pm.

But i'm only getting about 4Mb(4092kbs)

I'm guessing that this is because of people that have upgraded in my area are testing thier connections about now,if my speed is still the same tomorrow i'm going to give cs a call to see if they can help.

Got 10Mb in Horndean, near Portsmouth. Upgraded from 2Mb to 10Mb about an hour ago. Worked within a minute of me pressing the button. No modem reboot, modem is behind a router. See attached screenshot from DU Meter.

That just about sums it up. I'm sure ntl have made improvements in customer service over the years since we started nthellworld, but the problem (IMHO) is that they still appear only interested in metrics rather that a qualatitive analysis. So number of calls may have gone down, length of call may have dropped, 1st time fix may have increased, but they still do not have the correct product information. I should stress here that this is not the fault of the front line staff themselves, but of the people responsible for timely communication, not to mention the fact that CSRs are pressured by management to keep call times down rather than give the customer the correct details, hence the disparity of information provided. The "most popular answer" approach still appears necessary with ntl unfortunately. This has been a long running problem, but I digress... It does however, become more apparent with large issues such as this.

I agree totally. They should inform staff more, the lady I spoke to on the phone didnt really know what was happening because she told me to ring back on the 1st of next month and then I would get the upgrade?

got a feeling that the Samsung STB's can handle 10meg.
I was on a trial software beta thingy ages ago and i asked one of the programming guys what the differance was between a pace and a samsung. He said basically the samsung has 2 processors, one compleatly seperate for the cable modem allowing faster speeds without effecting the tv.
And also can you really see NTL spending a fortune upgrading all the 2 and 3 meg users to samsungs then 6 months later making them useless?
To be honest if the samsungs didnt take 10 meg im guessing they would have upped the speed to something the samsung could support rather than replacing them all again!.

Deakin, I'm in Paisley and I'm getting around the same speed as you. I've tried a couple of suggestions made by other forum members but haven't seen any improvement. It is a new service so I'm going to hang on and see what happens. However, it is reassuring to see someone in a nearby area getting the same results, so therefore the lower speed might not be completely related to my equipment.

Are any of your peeps with RUBBISH (i.e. below 10Mb) downloads using wireless networking? I used to have it, and found that the real-world connection speed was about a third of what Windows reports. You'll have to get the Black and Decker out an a reel of cable to join us posh folks with big fat wide proper broadband connections.

If I upset everyone then put a smile at the end does that make it OK? Not quite learnt this netiquette thing yet. :)

Not me, tests performed on non-wireless network (couple of PC's and a Mac), none of them are lacking spec wise either as somebody else mentioned. My speeds are slightly better than earlier, guess it's getting late.

I guess it's probably down to contention then. I live in pensioner-ville, so not too much competition for bandwidth.

You will not get 10mb over Wireless B devices, the upper limit is ~4.5mbit. Wireless G is again half its often regarded speed.

No, no wireless networking and I'm using a SACM. As I've said before, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it - as it's a new service, there is bound to be a bit of instability in the beginning.

Ok I live in Leamington Spa (On the Coventry network I think) and have just pressed the upgrade button from the 2mb I am currently on. 10 secs later and i am on now getting 10mb! So i have been upgraded. I use a Terryon(?) 210 moden which was installed in 2001. Seems fine to me.

So although i have to pay an extra £13 for a month or three I get the speed increase.

The news story on the portal page says "...it comes with a new 75GB monthly download allowance..."

I wonder if this is just a slip of the keyboard, or has it gone back to being download only again, rather than up + down?

Just a little addendum before I head off to bed. From what I understand, even the older USB connection used by the Terayon should be able to cope with 10MBits as long as there isn't too much of a USB "load" on the PC. However, someone here stated that the TJ210 can only cope with 7-8MBits so I would still need a new modem to achieve maximum speeds. I thought I'd do a little more digging on Terayon specs; couldn't find anything on their website but I did discover something interesting posted on this very forum at the beginning of the year:

Quote:

Nope - Terayon Terajet TJ210 cable modems are capable of handling around 28Mbit downstream (I think - though I'm sure Ignition will correct me ;) ). This is limited, however, by the connection to the PC - 10Mbps Ethernet or 11Mbps USB. In any case, they can certainly handle 3Mbps, so no change will be needed.
Now I realise that this statement emphasises the word CAPABLE but surely saying that the TJ210 can only deal with 7-8MBits is underestimating its capabilities? Sorry if I'm rambling a bit, it's just that I don't want to replace a perfectly good modem that might not even need replacing anyway! IvIaXiIvIuS, do you have any way of knowing for sure that it is your Terayon that is holding your connection back (albeit slightly)?

LenMackin 09-11-2005 00:51

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Yes i am wondering the same thing, my terajet TJ210 has been great, its even taken a couple of knocks in the past and has been connected for about 4 years with almost no downtime. However i am getting about 800-900kbsec downspeed at the moment depending on site. Microsoft is the best. My newsserver is giving me about 700kb.

Can't find any specs online about his modem though.

I am also running through a Lynksis WRT54g wireless router.

Right, I'm in manchester about 5 miles from the city centre, I have the new silver samsung stb and am on the 3mb. I just got off the phone to customer services on the 0800 052 2000 option 5 number. I was told by a nice welsh lady that they can upgrade me to the 10mb but it will be tomorrow... ok but how-come all the new customers and some of the existing 1mb and 2mb customers are able to upgraded? she told me that they were trialing it to so many customers yesterday just to see how it went, and that the main roll out starts from today.

I asked her if the new samsung stb will be able to recieve 10mb and she said yes. so all being well, I and others in my area with the samsung should be on the new speeds tomorrow... we shall see

I am in the stoke area and yesterday i succesfully upgraded by telephone from 1mb to 10mb connection.

The chap i spoke to did advise that it is not available in all areas yet.

Speedtests show a varying rate for me from 4mb to about 8.5mb but that upload speed seems to be consistant. I am very pleased personally with the speed increase and i am sure that when everybody else is able to get the new speeds then they will be just as happy.

I am now waiting to read the new thread entitled ''my advertised 'upto 10mb' connection is mis-sold as its only 6mb so i want a 40% reduction in charges'' lol

Hope all you guys get your connections sorted soon:)

I suppose its the luck of the draw...but its very frustrating when you're getting people just down the road from you upgrading, yet they wont let you because its ''not available''

ask to speak to retentions/customer relations and/or ask to close your account - you will then get transferred to the dept that exists to stop people leaving - tell them you're fed up paying £38 a month for 3meg when you know that other people are getting 10meg for the same dosh - OR just ask to downgrade to 1meg and in 1 month upgrade to 10meg via the tier migration page.

It was 3rd time lucky for me.

I asked for 10 meg - the guy gave me the 2006 line...and I said BUT i KNOW that people are upgrading now from 2 meg to 10 - and I'm not happy about that - and he said he'd check to see if it was showing as something he could upgrade to in my area....and it was....so he did.

I guess you've got to speak to a 'person' rather than a drone...and you get somewhere

That's what Iââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ve been trying, but one of the guys said to me that it's not actually showing up as something they can upgrade me to in my area...so I explained that people down my road have got it, he just completely ignored what I said and continued to repeat †˜its not available in your area till 2006ââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢. If this is true, NTL are gonna come out really, really badly out of this whole mess. I'm was one of the lucky ones who got 10mb after 2 calls to CS. If the bump me back down to 3, i'm gonna go ape.

I think they are referring to the online upgrade from the 1M & 2M services to the 10M service - that was mistake. The 10M was only supposed to be for existing 3M customers, the online upgrade facility wasn't supposed to be there. Someone screwed up. :erm:

In my case i am paying for the upgrade from 1mb to 10mb connection - i am sure everybody else will too so i dont see the problem

yeh some people had 3mb connections a month ago to be 1st in the queue - and they ARE 1st in the queue for the automatic upgrade so what ? they paid for 3mb and got 3mb - i now pay for 10mb and get 'upto' 10mb

Thats odd, so I just rang the Broadband Tech support line about this, as I have the NTL home 120 modem. and they said it was a firmware problem which they have sorted out now, In fact the NTL home 120 silver SOCM unit can actually handle up to 38Mb connection!!! now. :Yikes:

I just got off the phone [a very nice young lady as well] and she said they cant even provision 10 meg for anyone, it just cant be done, its not on the system.
Her paperwork said , not even to new customers, and it will be December, or just after.
There seems to be a lot of variation if you read this thread, it seems impossible to make any sense of it.

So that means I'm NOT getting what I'm paying for. If it now costs £37.99 for the top service then thats what I should be getting. But I'm not because of this ludicrous staggered rollout. I pay £37.99 per month for the fastest connection so if 10Mb is available and I can't have it yet, then maybe I should only be paying £19.99 per month for my 3mb service.

NO - you agree'd to pay 37.99 for the 3mb service which WAS NTL's top tier.

as you are on the top tier you will be first in the queue for the FREE upgrade to 10mb when everything is automatically upgraded.

Everybody is getting irate and angry at NTL for giving us the possibility of having the fastest internet connection any UK supplier offers to the masses; and their arguments are based on rumours that NTL didnt even start themselves.

Next time a bloke in a pub tells you something dont listen - then you wont be bitterly dissapointed when it does not arrive when 'he' said it would.

Did you call customer services and ask them if you can get the upgrade?

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

I agree that the 3mb people *should* be able to request their upgrade too - as it would seem that anybody who is willing to pay for the upgrade can have it ( location dependant )

The product has been live for maybe 24 hours though - a rollout of this kind surely has some small problems - this small problem is just the fact that ntl;s system seems to struggle with upgrade from top tier to top tier - understandable really.

Everyone throwing their toys out of the pram when for all they know NTL may even be working on the problem as we speak; dunno .. i just think its harsh for people to complain in such early days.

As for me being on the 10mb yeah i am - i paid for the upgrade becouse i wanted it soon as possible - but if i was unable to recieve the upgrade i woul dhave sat here happily waiting for a week or so.

Ok, update

Technical Support are not aware of the issue with the Ambit modem not being able to support the full 10Mbit connection. They are also not aware of a firmware upgrade is needed.

The nice lady I spoke to has advised she will highlight the issue as it is defo a modem problem (she couldn't tell me if it is firmware related) and for me to wait for my replacment modem.

Re: *All* ntl Meg Discussion (part 2)

following on from http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...&postcount=751

A quick phone call to TS resulted in
Samsung STB's can handle 10Meg
It's "new customers only"
Me: So if I was new STB customer I could have TV phone and 1/2/10Meg
TS Rep: Yes thats correct.

So back to CS Option 2.

Nice young lady somewhere in t'North from her accent.
I explain the whole saga so far and summarise what TS have just told me, usual answer "Sometime in December, it's not out yet". I state "It's out, in the wild and I'm seeing in public domain information stating that fact", I get asked to hold whilst she consults with her manager, no music (relief), "Yes sir my manager will get it sorted for you once he finds the code, he'll ring you back within 30 mins just before it's actioned" 21 minutes to go

So it seems like those of us who have been told 'NO' just have to retry CS and hope you get someone who knows 'It's loose' and what can support 10Meg.

OT slightly but related.
The cancellation letter is still sitting here and waiting, I don't want to use it as cable seems to be the way forward but as we all know a communications company that doesn't communicate to it's staff especially in this instance isn't going to be viable for long. Lets hope when the TW merger happens that someone with some nouse joins NTL and sorts the current shambles out.

Thing is Paul both of those comments bring NOTHING to the discussion so for you people please keep these to yourself.

Now as I can tell this problem I have a feeling will not get resolved anytime soon unless they release a new firmware for our ambit modems. I can't see this being a short process so I suggest anyone getting 5 - 6Mbit tops phone up CS and ask to have your modem replaced. I have to wait 3 weeks for this as they have no engineers untill that time

Interesting... Have you checked the diagnostics page? What duplex is it running at? What kind of network card are you running this through?

As I said I have a mate about 10 Minutes down the road from me with the little blue modem and he is getting full speed 1.2Mb/sec downloads without a problem.
