And they have changed Tiers too, if not overnight then fairly recently, as they weren't available on my TV Package previously.

Virgin change them around after last Thursday night - I did not know until the changes want LIVE.

Also I can confirmed that in Scotland STV +1 is still on Channel 114 so we have Alibi HD and STV +1 using Channel 114.

STV+1 isn't on my TV360 box here in Dunfermline - it's Alibi HD. STV+1 isn't on the EPG at 303 either.

Not on others either: https://community.virginmedia.com/t5...1/td-p/5358844

Possibly a glitch - time will tell!

It’s just a pity that the channel exists to broadcast local news. A great disappointment.

The local versions opt-out of the national schedule - so the main channel has no news programmes.

Maybe all the missing That's TV Local channels will appear on Virgin Channel 159 as part of the UK wide deal.

Plus my source has confirm that That's 60s will be using Ideal World old slot at Virgin Media HQ.

The local versions have about 30 minutes max of local programming each day - and some travel news captions in the morning. Otherwise the output is the same as the national service.

*That's TV Cambridge (In Cambridge areas only)
*That's TV South Wales (In Swansea areas only)
*That's TV Humber (In Grimsby areas only)

All deal was signs when they was under old mangerment.

Virgin do NOT carry That's TV Channels in:

*Hampshire
*Lancashire
*Manchester
*North Yorkshire
*North Yorkshire
*South Midlands & Cotswolds
*Surrey & South East
*Thames Valley
*Salisbury & Wessex
*West Anglia
*Central Scotland
*East Scotland
*Edinburgh & South Scotland
*North Scotland
*West Scotland
*Cumbria & Border
*York

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2023)

Thames Valley has a local programme from 3am to 6am - I'm recording it to check current output but last time I checked it seemed to be a looping 15 minute programme.

In the morning they carry That's TV national but with local text on-screen - which I bet counts towards their local output.

Full House or Maxit customers only can fast forward through the ads on ITVX though I could see that being extended to Channel 4

Whether they could get ITVX Premium (which includes BritBox and StudioCanal Presents) and Channel 4+ included I am not sure about.

All4 was recently rebranded as Channel 4.

Sky Sports Main Event is the most viewed Sky Sports channel so I doubt it, they could always replace the 'Free' Sky Sports Mix with the subscription Sky Sports Tennis.

Deffo not Main Event. It carries the best of the coverage from Open golf, Ashes thru to premier league in the summer.

The tennis thing will be temporary anyway

Now that they're in much more prominent positions on the VM EPG, the issue with 5USA, 5Star and 5Select still being in SD on V6 and 360 boxes is even more obvious.

Any there any plans to make these available in HD like 5Action is on these boxes, and like *I think* they may all be on Stream?

Inews reported Sky Sports Tennis coverage will be on dedicated channel from next year , I don't think it's temporary
Quote:

i understands Sky are also due to announce that they will replace Amazon as the UK broadcaster of the two professional tours in the coming months.

Sky Sports’s tennis coverage, which will be on a dedicated channel due to launch next year and feature multi-court coverage on streaming platforms, will be presented by Gigi Salmon, a regular tennis commentator and presenter on the BBC.

Also, they've somehow managed to break the 'red button' and 'yellow button' functionality on some of their channels...

5USA - 'red button' to catch up menu missing, 'yellow button' to +1 missing.

5Action - 'red button' to catch up menu missing.

It appears its actually owned by Lionsgate, Amazon regular add Lionsgate content perhaps not allowed to add to Prime or Freevee yet "This Video Is Currently unavailable"

Netflix don't own all of their Originals, which can leave the service just under 10 years later

Orange is the New Black is Lionsgate Television aswell.

Wednesday is owned and produced by the now Amazon owned MGM Television.

Definitely Lionsgate, Disney bought out the contract for Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher and Iron Fist which is why when they did

Some of their Originals aren't actually Originals like the upcoming Ripley which was originally due to air on Showtime

Basically streaming channels with ads (e.g. Pluto TV). VM are making some Pluto TV channels available via the EPG.

Well, if you take a look at Pluto TV, you will get the general idea. Whole channels devoted to cats, dogs, old films, etc. Some people like these shows, but if you are a seen this, done that sort of guy, there won’t be much on there for you. Infested with commercials, to boot.

I think these FAST channels are a novelty. Unless they improve the content, they won’t stand the test of time.

The profiles are very useful indeed, particularly for couples and families. It has the modern feel as well, which the TiVo software lacked.

I loved the TiVo when I first got it, and the V6 was an improvement. But looking at the software now, it just looks and feels so outdated. I don’t regret the change one bit, although I do recognise that early adopters were disappointed. Those disadvantages have been largely fixed now, although the ‘Wish list’ feature is not there (I think that is a TiVo copyright).

To be fair I find that Pluto TV is not too bad for adverts. The Mythbusters channel has one ad break during the show and one at the end, Married with Children channel has one ad break just before the end credits of the show then one after them.

Yes, it varies. But basically, I think it is dumbed down TV. If you want something to stimulate your mind, FAST channels are not the way to go.

That’s a real shame, OB. In 2019 these channels were cultivating an exciting new future.

I don't think Virgin needs to be worried at all, they just need to be ahead of the game for once, particularly given their enthusiasm for all things on demand.

In the future, I would like to see a basics bundle of streaming channels including the BBC i-Player, the full versions of ITV Hub, All4 and My5 without advertisements, UKTV Play, Hayu, Pluto, together with other free streaming services, and a mega-bundle containing the likes of Netflix, Prime, StarzPlay, YouTube Premium, Disney +, Facebook Watch and Sky Boxsets (and with whatever Sky platform transpires as the successor to Now TV once the linear channels are abandoned) with just the one subscription and with the ability to bookmark all this content in 'My Shows'. No doubt, BT will also have a streaming platform in place that we could tap into.

There will, of course, be an interim period when both existing TV channels and SVOD services co-exist, but that is how I see things panning out. Hopefully, we will get a huge selection of streaming services - the best of the Roku channels!

I didn’t mention FAST channels specifically, I mentioned Pluto TV, recognising that some people liked this stuff.

I have no problem with FAST channels being available - I just wouldn’t want to watch them myself. It’s just even more dumbed down TV.

Virgin needs to give people the choice. I don’t have an issue with that.

From the Wrap:

Re: The TCM closure.

Quote:

"TCM Movies UK will cease to exist on July 6, 2023 TheWrap has confirmed. An individual with knowledge of the matter told TheWrap the closure is unrelated to the events concerning the U.S. version of TCM, and stems instead from a review of UK market-related linear strategy initiated after the merger that created Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022.'
From cordcutters
"It seems that Warner Bros. Discovery is joining a growing number of companies cutting back on cable TV as it focuses more on streaming."
For the UK the merger made WBD look at staff costs, plus Satellite and cable channels and they decided TCM was to go
Until Max UK launches in 2025, other than a few films on Quest, most WBD films in UK will earn money on other companies streaming services. whilst WBD concentrate on TNT Sports, Eurosport and Discovery+.

carriage renewal deals still ongoing.

Once signed Virgin may relaunch CNN.

Virgin may also get all or some of the Warner Bros. Discovery own channels:

*CNN International HD
*Discovery Turbo +1
*Food Network +1
*Quest Red +1

The following SD Channels may get axe by Virgin Media for the following HD Channels to launch:

*Boomerang HD

I'd expect CNN to return

The only reason it got removed was because CNN+ subscription was due to launch , It only lasted a month , the Discovery management shut it down shortly after the merger completed.

That makes sense assuming negotiations for the WBD channels excluding TNT Sports are handled together. These negotiations could just be for the ex-Discovery suite of channels.

I would think by now it would be all Ex-Warner Media and Ex-Discovery Inc going under Warner Bros. Discovery.

All I was told last week was "WBD are also in talks with Virgin over a renewal carriage deal."

None of the 1980s music videos look as bad as these did on any videos I’ve seen previously. The pictures were sub-standard SD.

On-location bits from old BBC shows were generally shot on film which could be rescanned into HD if the originals still exist, but studio filming was on tape which would have been re-used.

Which is most likely the source of VMs feed. The dish farm at Langley is still well used for most the non-HD content, although VM can pull the feed from Crystal Palace if they wanted to use Freeview as a source.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. They are already available elsewhere and, as I don't bother watching them there, I probably won't watch them on Virgin either. Much of the content seems fairly decent, so should be of interest to some viewers when it eventually launches.

I don’t know what rights expire but the joint venture has been the legal entity running BT Sports for months now. It’s essentially a rebranding exercise alongside changing how it’s retailed.

Longer term they might make strategically different decisions around rights acquisition but it won’t be an overnight change.

Virgin Media are changing how you can watch Channel 4 shows on demand from August 1st

From next week you'll no longer be able to use 4OD by scrolling back on the TV guide you'll instead have to go through to app which will force you to watch adverts unless you have a Channel 4+ account

braysoj1 24-07-2023 20:28

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2023)

Just so you know, from 1st August, you won’t be able to watch Channel 4 shows on demand by going back in the TV Guide or from the Catch Up folders – but they’ll be back up and running soon.

The good news is, there are easier ways to find your favourites in the meantime.

Here are a few ways to do it:

1. Press the Search button and enter the name of the show you want to watch
2. Press the Mic button on your remote and say the name of the show you want to watch
3. Launch the Channel 4 app in Apps
4. Press the Mic button on your remote and say ‘Channel 4 app’

The Channel 4 app has ad breaks, which can’t be skipped without a Channel 4+ account.
