I wouldn't like to guess but it is outside the normal range of SID numbers so could actually just be an internal test. Test 1405 & Test 1406 aren't PPV and jump between being DVB-C streams on TSID 514 and being EPG linked IPTV services on TSID 30 (which is not a proper transport stream). A bit beyond the scope of this thread.

Oh, I know that. This sort of service is one where I'd just wait for more info before trying to make a guess. Test 1405 is just a duplicate of Nat Geo (SD) and Test 1406 a duplicate of Gold HD, both used for internal testing and not for customer use - both currently in their TS 30 IPTV formats. Test 1420 may be something similar... or not. If it is going to be an internal test it doesn't really matter what is being carried.

The overnight changes were quite convoluted. I should be getting a full breakdown of the changes by this afternoon. Test 1420 has moved to TS30 as an EPG linked IPTV stream, following the pattern previously seen with Test 1405 & Test 1406.

The arrival of BBC Alba in HD doesn't surprise me, it was the only BBC channel left to move to HD on VM outside the Audio Description channels, which are, incidentally, redundant now for all the main PSB channels as AD is available on all the main services on 101-105, 141, 161 (and in HD) with a change in menu/settings.

It was expected, as is something else which I won't mention at the moment. Interesting that Virgin has treated the SD>HD conversion of BBC ALBA differently to that of BBC Parliament and other recent service upgrades. ALBA HD has been launched with the same EPG-ID as the SD services. BBC Parliament HD has a new EPG-ID so the old one will have to be retained as a placeholder to preserve any recordings. SI data now has dozens of these placeholders, many of them will have long retention periods as BBC / PSB placeholders.

You only have to look at the plethora of fledgeling streaming services to see that if you price garbage at less than a fiver there’s probably a few tens of thousands of mugs willing to pay.

Talking about BBC THREE:

Quote:

Most of BBC Three’s programmes have so far failed to attract more than 100,000 viewers on live television, according to official viewing figures, while some shows are lucky to get a tenth of that.

As a result, despite years of work to return the channel to air, BBC Three is now being beaten in the ratings by BBC FOUR, the vintage film channel Talking Pictures and GB News.

Brilliant news, MB. It’s just a shame that your viewing choices dictate that you have to wait until next weekend to watch it.

If you cast away your inhibitions and signed into the BBC I-Player, you could watch it right now. Or whenever it suited you, basically.

Ah, well, horses for courses and all that!

I really doubt it, Discovery Kids where it still exists in other countries (Latin America) has taken a non-educational direction, depends on acquisitions (some of which are on Pop), and because of this offers nothing new to the table. Also kids these days are more interested in streaming.

The Catch-up programming of the likes of Stanley Tucci Searching for Italy (which has been on BBC2 recently) could be on their combined on-demand streaming service, it doesn't have to be just about the live linear channel, which presumably might just seek to rejoin those platforms it left.

especially funny because NBC News Now has launched on virgin media and if you wanted your fix of american news youve just gone over there. Yes but CNN is an international news channel which only broadcasts its domestic service for a few hours each day whereas NBC News Now is a full rebroadcast of the domestic service.

Same. There is an information slate/audio loop on both Ch 851 and Ch 852 that tells you about the change and how to enable Audio Description on Ch101 and Ch102.

---------- Post added at 09:16 ---------- Previous post was at 09:06 ----------

All the PSB channels that have a service in 850s have Audio Description enabled on their main instance now, so the 850 range channels are now redundant for their intended purpose.

With these closures I think it's just a matter of time now before the remaining channels in the 850s close.

There is now (which is what I meant by iit eventually being corrected).

I wouldn't be too sure about them writing to those who receive bills in braille, they've been featured on the BBC for the shocking way they treat blind people.

BBC1 & BBC2 AD channels on 851 & 852 have now been removed from the network, as has the Metadata that supports any recordings.

Not that significant really, but will disappoint those wanting to minimise recording space by recording in SD.

Well, not quite. Older recordings may have been inaccessible for a while after the AD channels were removed from the EPG but should have become available again as the channels went into end of service placeholder status.

For Tivo and V6 boxes, yes. 360 boxes have a similar slideshow / audio loop on channel 851 advising how to use voice commands to enable audio description for BBC One although, seemingly, nothing on channel 852 to advise how to enable AD for BBC Two. Odd!

True, but imagine how confused a person with a severe sight impairment will have been.

I tried to watch a recording from the AD channels and was met with a message saying that the recording was no longer available because Virgin no longer carried the channel and gave an option to delete it.

I was going to, but i'm glad I didn't as they then became accessible again.

Someone with no useable sight will have had no chance of understanding what was going on.

Not that significant really, but will disappoint those wanting to minimise recording space by recording in SD.

I am one of them. The AD feeds were useful to save on disc space. I've spoken to my contact today because i'm not happy at all about this and they said they would have to speak to the office manager and will ring me tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

Due to health issues i've built up a backlog of various dramas and recording in SD allowed me to stay under the limit before it started deleting stuff. Now i'm chasing my tail and have had to delete some programmes that I did want to watch.

I don't even think they were using up any capacity, weren't they pointing to a duplicate stream??

Originally, they shared video / audio streams with the national BBC 1 London / BBC 2 England (& Scotland) SD streams. When the national SD streams were replaced with HD versions, the AD channels were the only services using those streams.

It's a bit like with the SD to HD channel migrations where users complained they still had the SD version and that the updates hadn't worked in their area. Boxes don't always update immediately and can carry cached SI data for relatively long periods. The solution is either to wait until the data refreshes or force the box to update with a reboot.

Re: Changes to Virgin TV (2022)

The AD channels were the last BBC SD channels that I was able to use to record from to save disc space. I've now had to delete some things that I wanted to watch and the box itself has deleted some things too.

I was not happy at all about this, so called Virgin to cancel. They gave me a further £25 off my bill (what the sly so and so's didn't mention was that they would remove the credit awarded to cover the price increase that I refused to pay).

Still, i'm basically getting Full House TV, phone & BB for the price of BB only, so we'll see how it goes.

I'd much prefer a decent all round service than discounts to compensate for their shortcomings in order to keep my domestic & commercial subscriptions. I will continue to praise or criticise them where appropriate.

If they didn't heavily discount, i'd be off like a shot. I owe them nothing, they are simply a supplier of mine who will be dumped the minute they no longer meet my domestic and/or commercial needs.

To have a box at capacity would imply a lot of saving programmes over a long time. TiVo is primarily a time shift device... Not a long term storage device. If you had to get a box swapped out you'd hardly expect compensation for loss of recordings

True (and that has happened to me a few times). Due to illness i've not been able to watch a lot of programmes (mainly dramas) that I've recorded, so it's worse than it usually is.

I also record a lot of radio, which you'd expect not to use much, but for some reason it does.

epsilon thinks this might be because it also records a lot of other data as well as the actual radio programmes.

Well, that either indicates that either:

You don't watch much TV OR

You are quite happy to wait for a scheduled show to start and you watch the advertisements.

My TV 360 is rarely above 5%.
We record and watch about 8 hours of programs on average a day.

Recording percentages can have long periods of not moving once you get into viewing rhythm. It doesn't mean any of those things are true.

We watch a lot of TV content, watch a fair amount of On-Demand services, but still a minority ot total viewing, and timeshift a very large percentage of content. And our recording percentage doesn't fluctuate much. And we record a lot.

Agreed. We record plenty to watch on delay... The quarter past the hour start time for ITV dramas so that you catch up to live by the third ad break. These are usually deleted on the same day.

Normally TV on from about 5pm to 11pm
Never or at least rarely watch streamers (Netflix per perhaps 2 to 3 hours a week).
Never ever watch at the start of a show and always fast forward the ads .
Just don't keep program once I have watched it . Just counted programmes and at this moment I have 14 shows to watch ,none more than 8 days old. Most go before the next episode records:dunce:

Hmmm, I suppose. I guess it’s just surprising it’s taken seven years for you to first consider how people use PVR devices as part of their current viewing mix.

As the average, rational consumer makes purchases according to their preferences (and not yours) and suppliers serve the whole market it strikes me as a fundamental misunderstanding.
