Maybe giving Jukin Media a chance to add more of their FAST channels to the same slate without using extra channel numbers. I'm not sure which of their channels though, People are Awesome seems to have been dropped on other platforms and they probably can't bring the Reader's Digest channel to the UK as the UK magazine has a different publisher. (Jukin Media is owned by Trusted Media Brands, which is the new name of Reader's Digest Association Inc.)

Maybe channels such as WeatherSpy or At Home with the Family Handyman.

Re: Freeview changes

I feel with Tiny Pop closing on March 20th it maybe down to Tiny Pop deal with Local Television multiplexes is up. Tiny Pop did launch on Local TV mux on Freeview on March 15th 2017.

But who will get Tiny Pop slot on Freeview if deal is not up?

If deal for that slot is not up maybe GREAT! Action will then use Tiny Pop slot on Freeview.

Why GREAT! action?

*GREAT! tv - Narrative only move this one to COM6 last June.
*GREAT! action - this Narrative Channel do not broadcast in Wales on Freeview plus also launch on COM4 on April 1st 2014 as Movies4Men.
*GREAT! movies - Launch as The Big Deal in late 2010
*GREAT! romance - Narrative only move this one to COM6 last July.

As the local mux only has around two thirds coverage of the whole country, action would be better staying on COM4, even without Wales.

With Narrative removing all channels from Freesat on Wednesday.

I feel Sky, Virgin Media UK and Freeview will following with Narrative moving from LIVE Broadcasts to FAST Channels.

epsilon 11-02-2024 17:33

Re: Freeview changes

FAST channels on Freeview are going to get interesting. At the moment they have to have MHEG and hbbTV versions to support different generations with that sort of capability. A third method being used for the BBC's EPG linked iPlayer streams and, possibly, a fourth method for compatibility with Freely. Things are getting quite complicated as streaming options with relatively low take up rates are replaced before they hit critical mass.

While it's true the audience figures for linear are quite low & may be an excuse for closing that output, there is also the possibility of less scrutiny from OFCOM over their content. Perhaps they see it as an opportunity of competing with another more controversial news channel that keeps getting it's wrists slapped by the regulator.

Or not as it will, largely, be a live feed of the radio content, which will continue to be subject to Ofcom rules.

I believe that there are plans to require internet channels to be licenced by and regulated by Ofcom.

Oh! Anyway, it is now live on channel 89.
Not a simulcast of the programme on ITV either, which is interesting.

Pre-recorded and shown on repeat. At least it will keep their costs down.

Maybe until the next shopping channel comes along. If they do that it would better to share the slot with 3+1 and Be+1 and restore 2+1 to a 24 hour schedule. It'll probably turn out to be just another listings error.

Shop On TV wasn't actually added to SDN in Wales, it seems that Everyone TV added the LCN data for it even though the service wasn't actually present. Giving viewers a service unavailable message, depending on their device firmware. If only they had a clue about what is on their own platform..
MTN (G_MAN) seems to be getting very crowded. It can only carry a limited number of services, so many will possibly only be for a few hours a day.

As Channel 4 rent out it new slot to That's Media.

BBC B has 10.5Mb/s free

*That more for two new HD Channels to launch BBC News HD than S4C HD/BBC Scotland HD. Then BBC Three HD can launch in Wales and Scotland.
*Up to 10 SD Channels on Freeview.

You may say BBC can't rent out BBCB.

Yes they can as S4C HD (In wales), ITV HD, UTV HD, STV HD, Channel 4 HD, Channel 5 HD, TBN UK and 5SELECT broadcast on BBCB right now.

D3&4 is 50/50 ITV/C4 with Channel 5 gifted capacity in the ITV half and S4C gifted capacity on the C4 half but only in Wales. BBC A isn't allowed to sell any slots to third parties but BBC B is a commercial licence run in the same way as BBC Studios / UKTV. The problem with BBC B is that the BBC hasn't yet committed to extending its licence past its current expiry of November 2026. So they won't be entering into new long term contracts.

D3&4:

Last channel to launch was ITVBe

With this new slot today it would have gone to Channel 4 to move one of their channels (E4 Extra or 4Seven) onto D3&4.

But has rented it out to That's Media to get some extra money,

BBC:

This is news to me - thanks for info.

D3&4 used to be divided into 2 parts and each half would carry an equal number of channels. ITV channels were all stat-muxed and C4 channels were stat-muxed separately then the 2 halves were "stitched" together. It was very inefficient. I think all of the channels are now stat-muxed in one operation, which is more efficient. I'm not going to try to get the data to check that out and do the maths to confirm it but it is the sensible way to do things. Historically though, there should always be an even number of channels on the multiplex. If they are renting capacity to other broadcasters, it would make sense to do it jointly rather than individually. It's always been a weird multiplex though, they allocate bands of channels in decimal ranges rather than hexadecimal. But this is getting a wee bit too technical. ;)

It's a big problem in business if a company agrees to a contract without fully understanding the terms and conditions. Even more of a problem if they don't have the cash reserves to overcome these obstacles. Probably better to have happened at an early stage than to have built up large debts and have no possibility of actually paying them. Just another chapter in the curse of shopping TV.

I don't think it's a new rule as such but they have been stung by similar operations in the past and are right to be cautious. They don't stand for any nonsense though, as View TV found when they tried to bend the rules for Rathergood Radio.

Same other than BBC 1, ITV 1/STV and BBC regional / local radio stations and local tv stations. Also, some minor differences in Wales.
Some areas away from the main transmitters have a cut down service from relay transmitters.

BBC Radio Solent for Dorset not BBC Radio Somerset
Interesting that the old Talk TV slot has been left in place duplicating the IPTV service on 294.
I hear the standby team at UKTTVC managed to get everything together without the usual crew and eventually managed to update the blog with the technical details of all of the changes. https://ukterrestrialtvchanges.blogspot.com

The DTT analysis, in terms of organisation is, pretty much, a one man band. When that one person is unexpectedly unavailable and a major update happens it is very difficult for support staff to pull everything together. It is also still at the beta stage, so a lot of manual updates are needed as the database is being built.
There were quite a lot of people pulled in to help set up new database routines this month. For example, there were no routines for complex changes such as the local radio ones. The analysts were quite brilliant with some of the things they managed to set up, actually setting up some routines for future updates.
It will also help when Wakefield monitoring is brought online, which will only gather the relevant information for analysis. The current monitoring location gathers all information for all multiplexes across several regions. So it takes far too long before information is available for analysis.

Following the closure of "Meet The Babes":

LCN 673 Smile TV3 was carrying BabestationX the PIN protected pay-per-view service from 10pm via an MHEG interface with no option available for newer TVs with hbbTV interfaces.

SmileTV3 continues on Freeview "in the clear" after midnight.

That form of PIN access has been bypassed in the past, so a very insecure way of trying to get £10 per view from the viewers.

An MHEG slate stating "This service has now closed.". Or, for hbbTV models a "not available" prompt (will depend on manufacturer / model) and a red button prompt to launch Great! Player. Not a consistent approach as hbbTV should have an HTML slate but that's Freeview these days. Some TVs will show nothing at all as it is on the local mux with limited coverage.

Thanks, I never knew that it was only on a local mux.
