Sound reasoning there, but maybe they just wanted to draw attention to the UHD. As Netflix is on both boxes, I would have expected Prime to appear on the TiVos as well, but maybe there is a technical reason why that isn't possible.

Assuming the information on the Wikipedia page is still accurate, NBC only own a minority stake in Euronews, so it's more likely they will sell their stake.

ABN TV on channel 842 has closed on VM. However, there is audio over the closedown slate. Not sure if this is the audio for ABN or something else

Edit: It does sound like the channel audio.

Where was that announced? Last time this seemed to be a thing, a month or so ago after a misinterpretation of DBR website data, it turned out to be a Catch-up stream.

AIUI, anyone can edit this website like Wikipedia. Some things turn out to be correct, but others have been added as fact as a result of things like forum misinterpretation or rumour.

We saw it closing down at midnight on Friday Night.

It was only on Virgin for 14 months - we think it was on an roll over deal (ABN or Virgin can bin deal anytime and give 28days notice).

But Virgin did move ABN over to MPEG4.

That doesn't mean that such an arrangement cannot be negotiated, though, as Sky has done for Netflix. If VM agreed to encourage new subscribers and get commission for that (or alternatively pay Amazon less per subscriber to advertise the service) then Amazon could be bundled with other SVOD services enabling VM to offer a bouquet of services for less cost. They could use that money perhaps to provide viewers with ITV Hub+ and All4+ so we could get catch up and other exclusives without having to negotiate those unskippable ads.

There's lots they could do to offer a good value for money streaming package for Full House, VIP and V VIP customers. It might even encourage more people onto the upper tiers.

Seemed a pointless move to convert it to MPEG4!

IIRC, didn't this black channel replace a standalone black film channel called Nollywood? I think that Nollywood then became available to all customers on Mix and above.

Nollywood then closed down on Sky and VM. On VM ABN replaced it and on Sky it was replaced by the FTA channel 'Retro Movies'. It was though that this was just a placeholder to keep and sell on their EPG slot, but It's still broadcasting and they announced the other day that they will be joining Freesat within the next three months. Maybe they will join VM too??

Retro Movies is like a poor man's Talking Pictures TV :D

Keep It Country TV is to change its name to Spotlight TV, to reflect that the channel is also featuring a lot of programmes that are not country oriented.

CEO Phil Mack has assured viewers on his weekly show that the core format will remain as country music, but the name change will reflect the fact that increasingly popular non country shows are also now also attracting large audiences to the channel.

Apologies in retrospect, for any ill feeling.
BTW I do wish we had KIC on VM instead of TC, from what Ive seen, it has far more superior output for true country fans (myself included) than the rather more new music sound of TC which seems to have a 90s/00s vibe about it.

Thanks.

I don't understand why country music channels don't appear to be successful. One of the most requested channel returns is Country Music Television, yet it has now deviated from country music even in America.

And now Keep It Country is watering down it's offering to the extent that it's changing name! Incidentally, this has now been officially announced by the owner on Twitter.

Cant remember if Virgin said all of the 'football' or 'sport' in one place?

I'm sure the Amazon App coming to VM is a major part of this after Amazon bought the rights to 20 matches a season from 2019-2022.

I honestly think it'll just be the app and we'll have to subscibe to it just like we do with the Netflix app.

These 20 matches on Amazon will be free for Prime members.

I think with KIC it’s partially the old “all the eggs in one basket” syndrome. With Vintage TV not around anymore they are cashing in on the people that used to be the fans of that channel as well. Since Total County came along the tag line has changed to “Country music & more”, so the name change is a natural progression.
Nobody can say that country music is not a popular format here. Any gigs by US artists over here sell out within minutes of tickets going on sale. The Irish acts (that Total Country ignores) are also constantly on tour over here, so the market is buoyant. There is also Chris Country radio appearing on more and more DAB radio franchises all over the country.

Which fans though? Vintage TV was very different at the end compared to when it started. Personally I preferred it at the start when it was all videos and they did eras way back until the 1920s. After they started doing 80s,90s and own content with new artist material it was a very different entity. I wish they'd created a Vintage TV 2 for the newer stuff, it was still worth doing (I love all eras of music) but they dumped the earlier eras to do it.

Anyways I'm getting way off topic, so I'll shut up now.

Vintage TV Music was recently awarded a licence to broadcast by Ofcom, so it's return is moving along. No idea if it will return to VM though.

I think they've ruined all the music channels - certainly those I used to watch, such as VH-1.

Much of its general image conveys it's all the same. But similar to Dance Music it has sub genres and crossovers with other genres e.g. bluegrass, which has a folk/blues/jazz vibe to it. Much of the more mainstream stuff now isn't like the mainstream stuff when I was much younger, you could almost say it wasn't Country and was only being labelled as such because of the accent of the singer.

I haven't actually properly seen Keep It Country (the Freeview TVs in the house tend to be locked to PSB channels most of the time), so I hope VM get its new incarnation of Spotlight TV. I'm curious how it has branched out from just Country.

Following the decision to bring the HD sub regions to VM (& Sky), STV is to bring more relevant regional content to Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh.

Does VM operate in these areas?

Sky customers have been advised to reset series links, delete any planned recordings for STV and reset them. Is this the same for VM?

I don't watch STV for News (I ultimately get the Dundee region, as it's the nearest STV region to me), but I was under the impression VM had already regionalised in HD and that was why the SD version was replaced on 103 at the start of the year. The VM deal was done for regional version, and was announced, well before the Sky deal was annouced so the implementation was probably before too.

And yes, VM do operate in at least Dundee and Edinburgh, I believe Aberdeen was never cabled by NTL or Telewest so I doubt VM would need to carry that region of STV.

I just looked and (as I vaguely remembered) Atlantic Telecom was the cable company for Aberdeen. They went belly up in 2001 and I believe their cable assets weren't bought and are still there, getting increasingly out of date, under the streets of the area. I get the impression they were more of a phone and internet provider than TV in their later years. Maybe someone from the area with a greater knowledge can chip in.

You'd think that VM or their predecessor in Scotland would have bought it cheaply. Even if it needed rewiring, all the ducts, rights of way etc would be in place and it would be cheaper and easier than extending their network to somewhere where cable had never been laid.

I've got a vague recollection (I can't find a source to back this up though) that their network used a very different type of technology. Couple that with the other UK cable companies mounting up debts at the time, and it probably didn't look a sound investment.

I believe one of the new companies laying fibre at the moment is doing so there, so there may be a consolidation opportunity at some point.

I'm guessing it won't be the full Prime with the ability to carry channels that VM already carry?

We don't know yet, but I imagine it will be the full Prime service. After all, we won't be getting a price reduction to view the stripped out part of it, so that wouldn't work really.

I don't think VM is too bothered about the overlaps, given that their channels are bundled with others at a discounted price. I shouldn't think there would be a great take up of any duplicated channels on Amazon.

Although some material competes with the VM Store, you get that now with some Netflix content.

We are now starting to think Virgin Media UK's deal with Sky may not be up this summer due to Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports Arena both launching in July 2017 in the UK.

July 2017 saw other Sky Sports branded channels being moved to other channel numbers.

It look like Sky deal with Virgin Media UK may not be up for renewal until Summer of 2020 or 2021.

That was just a reorganisation of the sports channels by Sky though, wasn't it? I don't think that would have impacted on the deal in this way. Any more than the Sky Living channel name changing to Sky Witness.

But Sky did launch two new Sky Sports Channels (Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports Arena) far as I know if Virgin Media UK has not signed an new deal with Sky their would not be allow to broadcast them on Virgin Media UK right now until their sign an new deal with it owner. All other Sky Sports Channels was rebranded from Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports 2 and so on.

Is Sky Sports Racing HD on Virgin Media?

I think the problem is believing these companies sit around like I do and phone up Vodafone after 11 months.

If something comes up of interest I’m sure both parties would negotiate at any time which is why the month of renewal of the “Sky Basics” channels has moved since their return, and Sky Sports 3/4 HD arrived at a different point too. We don’t know what the contracts say about additional or successor channels so it’s pure conjecture.

We agree on that point, jfman. I can't remember if the number of Sky Sports channels increased at the time, but if they did, a simple amendment clause would have been all that was required. After all, there was no additional charge for those channels.

jfman 05-05-2019 20:57

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

As for Sky Sports Racing if it’s from a contract dating back to Attheraces it’s probably a long (and uncontroversial) contract. I’m sure ATR was always available on all cable packages, at the end of the day the courses (and bookmakers) want exposure.

It’s probably virtually free and VM don’t feel the need to do anything in respect of HD.

They just changed the names of the full package of sky spirit channels though? If they had kept some channels from launching on virgin media then they would have lost fairly crucial money from virgin media customers and I believe sky sports is already a loss maker

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

I don't think they would combine the Premium channels deal with the Sky Basics one. They might negotiate them at the same time, but they would keep them separate deals.

As for new channels amending the date, I don't think they would, unless the contract was within final year of the current contract expiring. They would have a bolt-on amendment either already written in or added on saying something like "by mutual agreement additional services can be added on the same terms".

Obviously all of the above is just my opinion.

Bound to be, that's the SD channel number, and there are no package availability differences to complicate things.

Wonder if Crime+Inv HD will be next, it is in similar situation.

Maybe we are on another wave of HD swap-outs. Channel 5 HD, 4Seven HD, Quest HD are obvious candidates.

Just had a look, that HD Channel moves to Chanel 209, Lifetime HD moves to 208 so there is a round of changes planned that just popped up.

Quest HD, 5 HD, and 4 Seven HD say nothing at the moment.

Looks like Lifetime going to 208, Crime to 209, History to 270 and History 2 to 273. So the SD’s closing.

Also found Crime +1 moving to 222

I guess Lifetime HD will retier to whatever pack the SD is in too

Probably VM has renewed its deal with A&E Networks UK, the operator of those channels, which is why these swaps are happening.

For those that don't know, A&E UK has just undergone a "few" changes. The parent A&E (American) company is a joint venture between Disney and Hearst and that remains the case, but A&E UK was a joint venture between A&E and Sky.

To appease European regulators to get its takeover of Murdoch's companies cleared, Disney had to sell its stake in the European A&E channels, including the A&E UK ones and it sold its share to Hearst. Additionally, Sky has been taken over by Comcast, so these channels are now a joint venture between Comcast and Hearst, or something like that!:)

Are you saying History 2 is doing an HD swap out too? If so that would mean a retier for that too. (As an aside I've always thought it strange H2 was available on more tiers than History.)

What about 271 and 272?

History +1 on 271 maybe but it would be strange to leave 272 blank, are you sure History 2 is closing, or could it be there?

Possible, but 272 has been blank for a while to my (limited) knowledge. Not much reason to change that, it's not like they need a number for a History 2 +1, because 274 could be freed up from an HD swap, and 275 is free already anyway if H2 wasn't swapped out.

History ,+1 and 2 would still be right next to each other on the EPG, and VM wouldn't put another channel from a rival in that slot so it wouldn't matter. Plus it would have the bonus that the number would be familiar already, customers prefer things not to change as they'd have to rememorise them.

It's quite possible VM have a Sky-style mass renumbering (i.e. what Sky did with +1 channels) in mind in a few months time. Why cause unnecessary hassle in the mean time? Multiple HD swaps will create spaces that make a large renumbering easier later on and waiting until the swaps are complete will annoy customers less.

Well I get a pop up on History 2 HD telling me it’s moving and my series links will be ok. Sure the teams at VM have it all in hand

I’ve set some up to test it on Lifetime SD and HD, Crime SD and HD, History SD and HD and History 2 SD and HD.

Good stuff. I only have Lifetime SD and History 2 SD on my tier so I put them on earlier to see if they had pop-up messages. Oddly they didn't, and you'd think they would as you'd be more likely to lose your Series Links if they were on a channel that was disappearing rather than moving.

----

As an aside, I had Quest on earlier today and thought it interesting that on their adverts for their shows the channel numbers they use on ALL platforms is the HD version. With auto HD swaps on Sky and FreeSat HD-capable boxes it doesn't mean much on them, but Freeview and VM have the SD version on much more prominent numbers yet Quest chose only the HD numbers to promote. If Discovery are doing this it makes an HD swap on VM much more likely in my opinion.

Blaze is basically old A&E Networks shows from its Pay TV channels. So a mix of old stuff from Crime+Inv, Lifetime, History and History 2 (or at least some of them).

VM already have Blaze, but not the +1.

I did think they did due to them having one on Freeview but it only on air for about 14 hours per week.

Similar for me, I didn't know it wasn't on Sky, I just saw +1 on Freeview and assumed +1 was on satellite. :dunce:

I very nearly did a list like that myself (though I wasn't planning on posting it). Interesting to see it written down.

MTV+1 ? Is there such a thing?
BBC2 HD England on 162? We already get the same BBC2 as England, have done since BBC Scotland channel launched.
Sky Arts HD is on 122 and 193 on your list.

I envisage VM doing a "+1 Section" in the 200s like Sky have now so I'd have moved up the Factual and Lifestyle sections after moving the +1s. I also reckon VM will then actively promote the Press Green (or was it Yellow, I never use it) for +1 option which is currently unpromoted, probably because it's a little hit'n'miss and a bit clunky (it's not very smooth, unlike the Press Blue for HD feature).

MTV do have an MTV +1 over on Sky.

The list was make up by Media Boy HQ months ago (January 2019) before we know about the BBC SD Channels axe and A&E news this weekend.

We did not see Sky Arts HD and BBC Two HD in scotland was on our list two times until you told us.

I really do not like the +1 hour idea of Sky's.

Virgin can always put two Sky +1 branded channels at the end of list if that will known channel did launch on Virgin Media:zzz:.

Given there's been rumours for a while that Sky2 will be shut, VM could always test Sky1+1 in the open and shift Atlantic onto the Sky2 space if they wanted launch disguised.

Given VM will be wanting to move HD only rather than have duplicates (which the changes to A&E Networks UK channels due to happen overnight reinforce), and the recently annouced TV Packs didn't have the HD versions listed for the Sky/Comcast owned channels, there's a reasonable chance Sky/Comcast channels will be next given Sky's due to make a new deal about now.

I think VM would therefore only get the HD version of Atlantic, if they get it, and they might get Sky1+1, replacing Sky2. I have no idea if Pick, Challenge, Sky News and Racing are part of that deal usually, but there's obviously a +1 and HD replacement/swaps to be done amongst them. Worst likely case, it remains as is on a shorter deal.

All the AETN channels in SD have gone where there’s a HD. All my series links on the old SD have jumped to the HD and all the HD ones jumped to the new slot

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

The "We've made some changes" Channel Moved screen on the A&E HD channels old positions are going to confuse people. There is no mention of HD.

It just says "<Channel Name> is now on channel <Number>" rather than "<Channel Name HD> is now on channel <Number>" . The SD channels were on those channel numbers already, so that will confuse some.

On the other hand when you go to the newly swapped HD channel it has a "We've made some changes" pop-up message that does mention HD. And as it says "From 14th May..." it was clearly the one that higher tier customers saw in advance.

Customers on a package that had all the A&E channels clearly got prior on-screen notification, I never saw any on my lower package that has only Lifetime and History 2. Those on lower tiers are going to get a surprise today, I only know because of this forum. Unless it was a regional notification problem, that has happened before.

When I heard about the A&E swaps I was expecting a tile in the top of the EPG guide like with the BBC HD swaps and a pop-up on the SD channels. I had none of these things. I don't watch Lifetime, and rarely watch History 2, so it's not a problem for me personally, but it will be for some, who will be surprised if they had a similar lack of prior notification. Of course it could be a regional fault as I suggested earlier.

By the way, I can confirm the HD versions have moved down to their SD tiers as I haven't lost Lifetime or History 2. Just in case that wasn't clear from my above ramblings. ;)

Looks like Lifetime going to 208, Crime to 209, History to 270 and History 2 to 273. So the SD’s closing.

Also found Crime +1 moving to 222

I guess Lifetime HD will retier to whatever pack the SD is in too

That's not quite what's happened...

Lifetime HD is on 208
Crime + Investigation HD is on 222
Crime + Investigation +1 is on 224
HISTORY HD is on 270
HISTORY +1 is on 271
HISTORY 2 HD is on 273

209, 223, 274 and 299 are showing 'Channel Moved'.
221, 225, 272 and 275 are blank.
