Well, according to one source, negotiations for UHD channels are edging toward a final stage, Amazon Prime Video is coming soon and some will be shocked when they see what's about to be announced.

That should get you excited!

Of course, if you are a non-believer reading this, just keep on thinking that nothing will change, and when it does actually come, I'll warn you to close your eyes so you can stay within your comfort zone of negativity!

broadband -simple !
Has any one else been offered a " bribe" to take a V6 ?

Had phone call yesterday ( number withheld) Asking why I had not taken up the free V6. Said ,as well known here "if it an`t broke don`t fix it" And from what I have seen its no better than my Tivo ( in the way I use it which is not a lot!)
Asked if I would like to have one ,upgrading my package for 6 months at the price I pay now ( on new contract) Said no as I was looking at down grading TV yet again. WHY are they so keen to push it out . I see price increase written all over this free offer!

Probably so that they can make the SD channels MPEG4 or possibly close them altogether.

Maybe you are too focussed on price. Fair enough if that if all you can afford, but don't make the mistake of thinking that you will only get marginal benefits when getting a V6.

If you try to get into Netflix on the Tivo, it performs well when you you are in, but it takes about a minute to get in. That's not a big problem, but with the V6 you get in as soon as you press the button. That is so cool, and the experience these days that you expect.

When I tried to use the BBC i-Player on my Tivo, I experienced stuttering, buffering and being thrown out altogether. But with the V6 it is playing perfectly.

VM are aware of these issues and are keen to bring a better experience to their customers and keep complaints to the minimum.

So you why are you resisting this?

My parents have TiVo and have been offered V6. They are both over 60, don't have the Internet and aren't big on change. Do you need to have the Internet to have a V6 box? They don't need it for TiVo yet I'm sure it's a requirement for V6. Can anyone confirm?

ozsat 22-04-2018 08:37

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2018)

They actually have the Internet on their old TiVo but they are possibly not paying to be able to use the Internet themselves - TiVo requires it for itself.

Don't know if the same applies to the V6.

spiderplant 22-04-2018 09:04

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2018)

V6 needs a separate VM broadband connection. They shouldn't have been offered a V6. (Unless VM are also offering to give them broadband for free???)

ozsat 22-04-2018 09:32

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2018)

My mother got a vastly reduced Internet package as she almost no use for it - always worth asking.

You can be added as somebody able to speak to VM on your parents behalf- and explain their requirements.

Price isn't the issue ,the mess created to set it up the way l would like is.Honestly if l could get Freeview to my TV l would go with that just having bb would be fine by me.I get Netflix via my smart TV and as you say instant. As l run 2 TVs off the one box and the scart is in the wall I do not have cables showing . Putting a splitter to run V6 would mean holes repapering . Just not worth it as l only have the second one on if l am busy in the kitchen. Have to say l can't recall the last time
I have aproblem with Virgin.

No-one can be sure at the moment, John, everything on here is based on rumour, conjecture and hope, because official announcements on what is coming rarely occur these days.

However, I do think that these three events you highlight will be happening later this year (although Sky Atlantic may not be until next year).

If the thought of ITV Encore rocks your boat, we should be getting the on demand version of this in May.

Base on INFO given by an old Source (NOT Old Boy) given to Media Boy HQ in 2017:

-Sky Atlantic may appear on Virgin by 3rd quarter of 2018 on the Fun Pack.
-Sky Atlantic HD will launch on Virgin in 2019.
-An UHD Channel was rumoured to be set to launch an Virgin Media by May 2018 (That channel is still to even start testing on the network).

We was given FOUR other bit of information but any has still to happen.

Interesting that this channel is continuing on Virgin Media, as someone was saying that the channel would be closing down on Freeview.

Bit of an odd one. It's called 'BT Sport Free' in the channel guide PDF and on my V6 box it's called 'BT SptShow' for the limited character title and the full unlimited title 'BT Sport Show'. Only the logo actually has the correct name, BT Sport Showcase.

are all set to launch in July as Premier Sports reveal THAT Premier Sports to show every Guinness PRO14 Game from next season.

We still to see if Virgin Media UK will carry all the channels listed plus Premier Sports HD from July.

MB, The BBC are planning to stream their world cup games on the iPlayer in 4K/UHD, any news if the V6 will carry these streams? Or will we have to watch them through the iPlayer app on our tvs?

I guess because the BBC haven't definitely confirmed it, it's hard to tell...probably answered my own question haha

No news on what may happen with the BBC UHD Channel.

But with few hours to go before May we think it safe to reveal that the name of the UHD Channel will NOT launch by tomorrow on Virgin Media UK.

Note the following name was given to us in 2017.

-We was told back in 2017 that Discovery/Eurosport UHD may launch on Virgin UK by May 2018.

FreeSports is the Free-to-Air (FTA) sister channel of Premier Sports and is the UK’s only dedicated FTA Sports channel available in 22 million UK homes. FreeSports will turn High Definition in the summer.

FreeSports is available on:

Sky
Freeview
FreeSat
TalkTalk
BT Vision
Virgin Media (launching this summer)
TVPlayer online

The rumour new HD Channels launch are still NOT confirmed!

We mean Premier Sports PRO 14 info page says "(We are) Confident of reaching an agreement with Virgin Media to broadcast FreeSports during the summer".

But the PRO 14 web sites says that FreeSports are "launching this summer".

It just an case of wait and see until Virgin Media UK, Media Boy Sources or JJ20X Confirmed.

No sign of the new ITV Encore on demand yet. I now think we may not get this until talks between VM and ITV on payment for the main ITV channel is sorted. I expect that ITV Encore will be part of the deal.

Hope they don't pay over the odds for it, though. Not unless they are going to add new content to it. We already have ITV Collections, after all.

From what I can make out, the same programming is on the Arabyan version, but it is, of course, spoken in Arabic.

However, they do also get an English language version, so as you say, it would not be too difficult to bring Quest HD to these shores.

As of August 2017 Malone did own about 30% of Discovery shares and holds the most voting shares.

https://mediaboyblog.blogspot.co.uk/...wamp.html#more

But note that was before Discovery acquisition of Scripps (Food Network and Travel Channel plus 50% of UKTV [Gold and Drama and so on].

But John Malone did buy more Discovery Inc stock in December.

Do this help you???

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2018)

Yes thanks, as it confirms that John Malone has the ability to win any vote as to whether Discovery should make Quest HD available on his wholly owned Virgin Media platform.

I think that he'll want to do this as it would help to make his own platform more attractive to potential customers, especially as Quest have now won the rights to the English Football League.

I've seen some people say that the Freeview SD version of Quest leaves a lot to be desired and it's not available at all to some Freeview customers.

I haven't heard any more about Quest HD since Discovery said that they were "working on it".

I've seen some people say that the Freeview SD version of Quest leaves a lot to be desired and it's not available at all to some Freeview customers.

I haven't heard any more about Quest HD since Discovery said that they were "working on it".

Quest have only won the rights to highlights which C5 have been showing this season.

There won't be a vote on this, it's a case of negotiation.

I agree. I don't think Malone would be involved in this level of operational detail anyway.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2018)

I would think that the two entities would negotiate as separate unconnected companies, but if this didn't obtain a positive result, someone higher up could influence the outcome.

It reminds me of the time when VM sold off some channels that they held a 50% stake in, just prior to this all of the ones missing from the portfolio launched on VM.

In certain cases, decisions can be influenced, remember when the Sky channels were pulled from VM in a carriage dispute? Staff changed the EPG entries to Sky Gone, Sky Snooze etc. Branson thought that this was childish and ordered them to be corrected back..

I wonder if La Liga UK rights owner 11 Sports will set up as a channel as it has done in other countries? The advent of stand-alone sports channels like DAZN and 11 Sports seems to vindicate VM's strategy of not following BT into this market.

The implicit question is what do Eleven Sports do with those rights. The clock is ticking!
- Sub-licence to BT, Sky, Premier Sports or Amazon?
- Sub-licence to a PSB?
- Offer free online sponsored by Santander?
- Acquire more rights to form a channel and then try and get it bundled in with BT Sport or Premier Sports?

They could snap up more content. The rights to Seria A and Eredivisie are up for grabs along with the Scottish Cup and Scottish International teams friendlies. I'm sure Amazon would love to add Eleven Sports as one of their Amazon channels.

That's right. I don't think for one minute that La Liga will be the only sport on Eleven Sports (note the plural!).

I like football, but only ever watch the Real/Barcelona games - don't watch any of your suggestions so for me it is a non-starter if it isn't free.

Exactly the majority of UK viewers who watch Football view the Champions League , Premier League , EFL etc.

The rest is just filler , I wouldn't subscribe to a Channel with just foreign football league's.

What's happened to the remaining two bundles of Premier League rights? Could they still be up for grabs? I suspect too expensive for Eleven Sports though.

They haven't been sold as no-one met the reserved price.

The PL are still hoping to get improved bids - but they may be disappointed.

Perhaps Premier or Eleven will get them when they are 'reduced to clear' as it were?!

All four regions of STV now have Audio Description broadcasts on satellite.

IIRC VM only broadcasts into three Scottish regions, does anyone know if VM has mirrored this development?

If so, this would be excellent news for visually impaired viewers in Scotland.

That's not going to happen - although these are not very attractive packages (midweek for all 10 games in the round), if they did that then in future broadcasters would play chicken with each other refusing to put high bids in knowing the PL would sell at bargain-bucket price as the deadline neared.

No imagination, I'd say. Given the small amount of local programming that they have to put on, you'd have thought that they could network their remaining programming with other local TV stations (that is, most of their broadcast time) showing programmes that people actually want to watch. A bit like the old ITV structure.

I think you are likely to use an awful lot of recording space if you attempt to record a UHD programme, so it's probably not worth doing.

Irrespective of how much space it uses, people will want to record UHD programs to time-shift.

You saying it takes a lot of space only highlights the short-sightedness of VM in having a miserly 1Tb storage

I think once UHD becomes more regular and goes On-Demand, there will be little need to worry about recording for time shifting purposes or the need to have big hard-drives in the V6 box.

TV programmes/shows are repeated often enough throughout the week, plus with 6 tuners, there isn't much time-shifting clashes now anyway.

Maybe true for general programs, however when you look at sport this is definitely not the case.

Recording sport is a definite requirement as a lot of people cannot be in when the games are shown live or when things clash.

Have to agree, minimum should have been 2Tb, preferably 4Tb - hard disk prices aren't that much higher.

Recording live sport is dangerous lol. I don't record a football game I'm going to miss as the results appear all over the place.

The same goes for any major live sporting event...results appear instantly these days.

I do record the F1, but have to make sure I don't look at the news on my phone, and try to avoid it from tv and radio. I'm not always successful :td: lol

Although if you are watching something on one channel, with something else on another channel, then you'd need to record one. Depends how long you are going to keep the recordings for? They wouldn't take up that much space if you watched it pretty much straight away. Otherwise you run risk of finding out the result elsewhere.

No choice but to record - for instance there are 17 live rugby union/league matches plus the FA Cup Final on Saturday alone.

Secret is to watch the games you will hear the result of first.

As for your suggestion that UHD recordings won't take up that much space if you watched it pretty quickly - I am fairly sure the amount of space each recording will use is the same if you keep it for 1 day or 1 month. Of course the cumulative space used will be more the longer you keep them for, but this also applies to HD recordings.

My thoughts on the pitiful disk space remain

RE: the recording space - The cumulative space is what I meant, sorry I should have been clearer. Least you know what I'm talking about lol

As, like you say, the amount of space taken up would remain the same regardless of the time you kept the recording for.

Is there any mention of external hard-drives being compatible with the V6 to improve recording space? This might have already been mentioned in the thread before...apologies if it has.

Thinking about it, probably not as VM would want you to purchase more V6 boxes to increase the storage capacity that way.

In the past (when with sky), I have opened up the box and put a bigger disk in myself - not seen any reports of people trying this with the V6

The fact that we have now a UHD box with only 1 TB of recording space, which would not allow for many UHD recordings, I suspect that the plan VM have is for all UHD material to be available on demand or introduce an ability to record to the cloud.

I use three separate machines to record my HD viewing now as one is totally inadequate.

I thought he meant watch everything fairly quickly and then delete it. That way, you would not have too many recordings in 'My Shows' at any one tiime, which makes sense if you can live with that.

It was done with the V+, but not heard about anyone trying it with the TiVo or V6.

The TiVo is a bit difficult to get into as they tried to make it tamper proof (I assume the V6 has too?), but it's still possible to get into them. A fair few have done this to get the HDD out to re-use before scrapping them.

Thinking about it this might be why some turn up on eBay etc.
