Looks like apps in place of channels is the way Virgin are going.

Well, 2014 was the year for TV channels on VM, which received a pretty good response on these forums.

If 2016 is the year of the app/streaming channels, it could be surprisingly good! As long as the material isn't all reality and dumbed down rubbish. We need some quality stuff as well to attract the good kind of attention and appreciation from VM viewers.

Never disappointed.

Look the only new channel of consequence would be SA and that's not coming to VM soon so just a few niche channels, repeats channels and more "reality" TV,

oooh I can't wait, so much for lack of capacity, there seems to be unlimited for shopping channels.

However no sign of the several channels that are available on all other platforms but not VM (e.g Spike, Talking Pictures, Moviemix, Movies4men....)

Capacity is not an issue as proven by all the streams for the 2012 olympics. I guess QVC are paying to have their channels listed if it is indeed them.

It is being suggested MovieMix may soon be about to be replaced with True Crime

Surprised to find the Arte app on my TV. I had heard a while ago that VM were in negotiations for this channel, I bet it was for the app as opposed to the linear channel.

Well, they told AKA etc that they could only lauch via an app. It was either that or nothing, so there was some speculation that VM once again had capacity issues.

I guess the launch of these channels would prove that the reason they weren't allowed to launch linear channels had nothing to do with capacity.

Not just that we have 3 music channels run via a app with no way to record or see via guide but they have space for 3 shopping channels not via a app wrong

Which of course means squat diddly if your bill isn't any cheaper , Sky Q customers don't pay extra for Sports or Movies in HD , you don't need a degree to see they've just added the costs in the Sky Q fee for instance Sky Q Silver costs £54 which is basically the Family bundle which retails at £36.

Arte got funding for a year's experiment of making its programmes available via an app for countries in the EU outside France and Germany so it's now on quite a few smart TVs and streaming devices.

There's around 250 programmes with English subtitles and in HD covering the arts, popular culture, other cultures and concerts - BBC 4 type stuff really. Some are a bit staid but there's some more interestingly presented ones too. Have dipped into it quite a bit lately, though the navigation isn't great which makes it hard to see what is new.

Just been chatting with a mutual friend who works for VM to see if I could find anything out :D

I said that I was thinking of upgrading to TiVo, but had heard that a new box was due to come out.

She advised me to hold on as the current TiVo was good when it was first introduced, but is now not so good (i'm assuming that she meant the clunky way it works that a lot of you are unhappy about).

I said I thought i'd read on the internet that the new box was due out in July, the reply was that the launch date had been put back time and time again, so I shouldn't hold my breath!

When I asked what it would be like, she said that it will be called Horizon- isn't this what LG use in Southern Ireland and elsewhere?

I'm a bit confused as the LG Horizon box and the TiVo are completely different aren't they, also wasn't the TiVo contract renewed fairly recently

She said that the new box was designed to compete with Sky Fluid (never heard of that; is this the same thing as Sky Q )

Maybe a hybrid TiVo/Horizon box has been created?? This would probably take care of the TiVo contract, give LG an opportunity to get their boxes into peoples homes and customers could get the best of both worlds??

Do you have any other friends who work for VM? This one seems rather unreliable.

BTW, there is nothing wrong with the current Tivo. Not to say that a new one won't be better; it will, but I'd keep my Tivo over the current Horizon box any day of the week. The Horizon bit sounds strange to me, because as you say, the Tivo contract was extended.

That maybe the case but what about attracting new customers personally I wouldn't subscribe as long as the current Tivo box is the only offering.

There is no way they will support two different PVRs. Looks like you're stuck with Rupert for a while ;) (or other non VM options).

The functionality of the current Tivo beats the Sky+ box. And for me I have no issue with speed for it's PVR functionality, which is all I use it for. We shall have to see if VM decide to bring out an answer to Sky Q.

I wasn't saying I wouldn't have a TiVo just not the current option , for me it's not just speed the current menu system is too convoluted and browsing On Demand something i currently use a lot is a chore when compared to on Sky.

I agree I have no issue with the PVR side of things however I tend to use On Demand a lot these days.

Thanks, there's a very good Guardian article on it which says it's non-exclusive except that "Sky will get exclusive on-demand access to selected shows that will air on Viceland 24 hours before the first scheduled broadcast."

Viceland replaced H2 in the US. Wonder if the same is happening here?

We've only recently got H2 HD, is this still a VirginMedia exclusive?

Good question to ask.
When Channels appear on VM, Does VM pay the channel, or Sky. As l assume that, the channels that we get. Come from the Sky packages.

Very interesting comment at the end of that article which should hopefully convert the last few remaining pessimists on this forum.

Some pay VM eg the religious channels. Some VM pay the channels eg Sky Sports. Some are cash neutral I think eg BBC. Whether these channels are in the Sky Entertainment Pack etc is not relevant to cable, VM deals with the channel owners directly.

BTW, there is nothing wrong with the current Tivo. Not to say that a new one won't be better; it will, but I'd keep my Tivo over the current Horizon box any day of the week. The Horizon bit sounds strange to me, because as you say, the Tivo contract was extended.

Don't know what she does, but it's not management or anything.

Just thought i'd post what she said in case it tied up with any of the rumours flying about.

A rumour? Where have you been for the last 6 months?

To answer your second post about this, it has been on release for selected new customers for a few months and on trial for a lot longer than that.

And yes, it is capable of at least 16x4 DS/US and potentially higher so would be future-proofed for any new VM speed tiers like the 300mb currently available to VM Business customers (Who use a different LG sourced Modem/Router).

As for the device itself? Good luck.

The SH3 is still in trial mode and has been released to Beta testers and selected new customers only.

I can tell you not to go down this route yet ... the firmware is still very much in Beta and is riddled with problems.

Yes it works, but if you want advanced settings such as port forwarding with the firewall, forget it ....

(and yes, I do have first hand experience of this)

If you are on a SH2 AC then I would recommend you stick to it.
That is at least stable and works well to a point.

I have a SH3 and the gui is a mess, slow to respond, various tech issues.
Appears to have been rushed out for no apparent reason when the trialists were still reporting bugs.

It's a linear channel for one day only on 12/3/16:

It will be made available to all subscribers on channel 996 due to a scheduling conflict with ITV4.

Completely agree. As a trialist I've had mine for several months as well.

If you are an average punter who just plugs it and leaves at default settings then most things are working but for those of use who need to delve in and set port forwarding, fix IP addresses etc. you really struggle to workaround the bugs and GUI anomalies.

Just received a letter telling me that VirginMedia Cloud app on Tivo will close in April.
This is another Grrr... to me, as I have music on there which is not available on Spotify and listen to it through my amp.
Music OnDemand gone and now this. Seems like Virgin are getting rid of their own offerings bit by bit, but the price keels going up.

The problem with virgin cloud was backup was slow and very expensive and with the new TiVo on the horizon it might explain why

2016 will be the year of reckoning and I think Media Boy's hints are most encouraging too. New Tivo. Tick. New Super Hub. Tick. New cabled areas. Tick. New apps. Tick. New channels. Tick. Weakest aspects seems to be the lack of 4G and a confused content owning strategy.

Good news regarding Sky dropping the HD charge for sky Movies, shame it`s not for Sky sports too though. i can`t help but wonder whether the announcement now about dropping the HD charge for Movies is just a softener for the forthcoming price increase?

Possibly, but it could also be because the demand for Sky Movies has been falling, with the competition from Amazon and Netflix hitting customer numbers quite hard. Sky Movies via Now TV are cheaper and more flexible than via the HD subscription on cable or satellite and are in 720p (£9.99 a month, no contract, even less if you have a search around for season tickets).
Unlike the situation with Sports I'm not aware of Sky's movie deals having a dramatic price hike, so it will be interesting how much this price rise is going to be, and how much of it VM pass through to us.
To compete, Now TV has to keep prices down - it's already effectively the premium of the IP-based services in terms of cost and programming and can't raise prices indiscriminately without losing customers to alternatives.

You needn't look to far
http://www.nowtv.com/offers

6 months movie pass £35.99 equivalent to £6 a month
6 months Entertainment at £24.99 or just over £4 a

Both represent pretty good value for money.

Sky's ownership of Now TV gives it both strengths and weaknesses , it's strengths are Sky's excellent content deals however it's weaknesses are the fact the streaming service is never allowed to be made more desirable than its satellite platform hence why we have never seen 1080p streaming or 5.1 sound.

trickytree 14-03-2016 11:25

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

Isn't the charge £7 for HD Movies and Sports though? It's not like it's £3.50 each.

IE. Like Sky is £10 a month for HD it's your own fault if you don't subscribe to Movies and only Sports it is still the £7 in our case or the £10 in Skys per month?
Therefore I can't see us getting any reduction.

I agree.

There are other disadvantages.

The limited time that they add box sets for; e.g. they have just added season 2-5 of Game of Thrones for a paltry 3 months.

Current TV shows; they only keep four back episodes. When Amazon or Netflix get the rights to a currently airing show and add episodes weekly, they keep all back episodes. There are several current shows that Amazon add weekly episodes of that I watch (e.g. Vikings). I wait until they've added the final episode of the season and then watch the whole lot. You can't do that with Now TV.
