I get the same with the SH2. I had a thought that it may be to do with the next firmware update that I believe was pulled because it didn't work.

it is just some gay rebranding to make it sound new and different. When you hear vivid you think of something new, crisp, fresh and vibrant.

yup, as soon as you say vivid I think of bold colours and something that "stands out" over everything else and maybe that is what VM want you to think. There must be a psychological term for that, subliminal product association or something.

'Ordered' an upgrade just now (not 2016 as previously stated);
Your order
SuperFibre 70
Your extras
Don't worry, we will email you in the next 48 hours to let you know the exact cost of your services. We'll make sure you get the best price we can give you based on the mix of services you hold in your package.

Thing is, I do worry. Why would VM talk about 'exact cost of your services' when VM tell you it's a free upgrade?

I'm guessing that this is a standard message that VM's software displays even if the upgrade is free. But worth checking their next message!

100Mb isn't the top tier. 152Mb is.

50, 100 and 152 become 70, 150 and 200.

You are misreading things somewhat. If your account says you are on 100Mb and that is what you are getting then the free upgrade takes you to 150Mb. Its not clear from your attachments how the two pictures fit together, but if you want 200Mb you will have to pay for it.

Misreading? How?

In MyVirginMedia I go to my packages, I am then told I'm on Vivid 100(1st screenshot), I should be able to upgrade to 152(Vivid 200)from there, on pressing the upgrade button to do just that I get told I'm on the highest tier already(2nd screenshot).

Edit: Just to clarify, I'm fine with going from 100 to 150 via the speed increase, but a bit confused why within MyVirginMedia I can't upgrade to the top tier because I'm apparently already on it.

Re: Virgin Media 70, 150 & 200 Mb Upgrades

I see what you mean I hope. Originally there was 50 100 and 152 and now there is 70 100 and 200 but original customers on 100 before it became vivid were allowed to upgrade free to 150. (someone will put me right if I'm wrong) It looks as if VM consider you are on Vivid 100 as opposed to the old 100 so you have to pay to upgrade. A phone call to retentions might be the best course of action, however make sure you're polite.

I was under the impression the 3 new tiers will be 70, 150 and 200 and it was the 200 tier that is currently a free upgrade but the other 2 will follow suit.

If i go to their webpage the 3 tiers are listed as 50, 100 and 200.

that is because they are doing the 200s first and working backwards to the 70 and 100s. Although I have seen a few posts over the last couple of days where people have upgraded to 70mbits, up and till now the configs haven't existed for 70 and 100 which is why 50 couldn't upgrade to 70 and 100 couldn't upgrade to 150.

what a joke. From the get go the postcode checker and myvirginmedia have always said the speed upgrade would be available by the end of November. Now bear in mind that VM said that 90% of users would be upgraded by xmas and last week the postcode checker said that my area was now ready. I have just checked myvirginmedia and now it has to it'll be ready by end of March 2016 and the postcode checker says they'll be in contact between January and March. Surely it doesn't take them two weeks before their deadline to realise things wont be ready and they need to put it back by 5 months?

This is turning into even more of a joke than previous upgrades. Why set unrealistic targets when you know you haven't met previous ones?

Over the summer my SH1 100Mb was doubled to 200Mb as part of some trial, had to switch my N66U to Asuswrt-merlin to get hardware nat acceleration enabled so the N66U could use the full speed.

It appears to be a policy decision that the SH1 is not used above 100Mbps, probably due to the lousy wireless side. So they do not a config file for it on the system.

That is in no way relevant.

A claim was made that the Superhub 1 can't do speeds above 100mbps.

It has supported the 100mbps, 120mbps and 152mbps tiers over time.

Stephen 09-11-2015 13:35

Re: Virgin Media 70, 150 & 200 Mb Upgrades

It is relevant. It may well work but VM want all customers in higher speeds to be using a sh2 or sh2ac.

So they will only be able to upgrade if they take the new kit.

We got 152mbps as soon as it became available and still had our Superhub 1 then, so they allowed us to upgrade.

Maybe they've put new rules in place since then, but there was no restriction before.

General Maximus 09-11-2015 18:33

Re: Virgin Media 70, 150 & 200 Mb Upgrades

I did as well and they insisted I had a shub2. If I remember correctly they didn't even have a 152mbit config file for the shub1 because they wanted everyone to have the shub2 for improved wireless. That is why they want everyone to have a shub2 or ac now because it is pointless provisioning everyone for 150mbits+ when you know the wireless on the pe cant handle it. You are just asking to be inundated with calls.

According to my records we got the 152mbps upgrade in May 2014 (from 120mbps), so it's possible that they changed their policy after then, but before it was available in your area.

It was always suggested that those going up to 152Mbit had a SH2, but it wasn't enforced.

The absolute requirement for both VIVID 150 and VIVID 200 to require at least a SH2 is part of this current set of upgrades.

Not at all, SH1 is just as capable as the SH2/ac in modem mode.

I just made that up. You do need a SH2.

Sorry to repeat myself here, but even in modem mode to get either VIVID 150 or VIVID 200, Virgin Media require you to have a SH2 or SH2ac. If you don't have one, you will not get either new tier until you've been sent one.

Ooops, you are right and I should be told off.

What I should have said is that the SH1 is capable of it, but Virgin has not permitted any 150/200mbit profiles to go out. So weirdly you can get 152Mbit but not 150Mbit. My bad!

So yes, you do need a SH2 or better.

Thanks. So the question begs, is it worth running the SH2 in modem mode when it arrives?

Thankfully no sales of new additional tiers prematurely, in a similar manner to how the old 100/10 tier was done.

When sales of additional tiers are done in upgraded areas, it's dire anyway!

That depends on what you want to do with it. Anything straightforward shouldn't be a problem. If you were already running in modem mode and are happy then just carry on the same.

I look at it the other way round and say shubs should always be used in modem mode and only revert to router mode in an emergency/last resort.

No surprise that they're conveniently now putting bundle price up £3.50-£4 per month at the same time as the 'free' upgrades.

On the bright side, it's an extra chance to re-negotiate.

Let's not generalise. Additional tiers are not the same as uplifts.

Your lucky. When the emails were sent out promising this up comming upgrade it was stated on the my virgin media website it would be "before December"... I just looked today and now it says "Your speed boost will be ready by the end of March 2016."

So, once again, it seems Virgin have lied about their upgrades.

My 'free' speed upgrade was originally going live at the end of November.

I checked just now and it's available already, however as i get less than 10Mb in the evening i won't bother with the upgrade.

If i did would it start a new 12 month contract?

You have filed a fault report and got money off your bill? I get £10 a month off due to my speed dropping to 50mbit from 100mbit most evenings.

Yes it would but...their is a price increase in February which will state you can come out of contract, so you can come out say 3 months time.

No it specifically states that it does not enter you into a new contract.

I had no idea they had! when I got my bill yesterday I called them - upshot is 30 days notice and ta-ra! I can't use my line unless I am up at 3am. Some of us work. The problem is not many people round here do and that's why it sucks.

When my SH2 was stuck on 50mbps config the tech agent told me I was on wireless and therefore I should connect a cable. When I asked if the superhub would get 70 in the current config he said yes. Wow, it can defy physics. Awesome!

As it happens I recorded the call. Just incase

Upstream on 152 is 12 but are 100 customers still only getting 6 when they upgrade?

That's quite a sweeping generalisation.

Some people might want the extra upload and download and be prepared to pay the extra £7 for it.

Then they have more money than sense. What does 200mb allow you to do which 150mb doesn't? Majority of devices can't utilise these speeds anyway and they make diddly squat difference in the real world.

Once speeds went above 10mb it's all because become a numbers, marketing 'mines bigger than yours' suckerfest.

Just rang up to renew my Annual Line Rental Saver, and was offered the 200Mb - took it.

I've just registered for our upgrade from 50 to 70 and had the confirmation email. Just waiting for the new config to be available. Not really fussed about the down speed but almost doubling the up speed will be nice. As a percentage increase it's better than the higher tiers.

I'm trying to remember from the last time whether you have to manually re-boot the SH to get the new config or it gets done remotely?

I have had to manually reboot in the past, but also had it auto reboot, so if you don't have it after a while give it a reboot, unless they tell you it takes 24hrs?

No timescale given on the email apart from some mention of 48hrs to appear on the account. I'll give it that long to do it automatically and then do a reboot if it hasn't.

Upgrade has happened without me rebooting. But since we've been having network issues over the last half day, now fixed, the speed is like a breath of fresh air after my 3G backup dongle.

My speed boost originally said by end of Nov 2015, then Dec 2015 and logged in today and it's now Mar 2016!

Might as well just use the usual VM tag line, your broadband speed boost is coming soon ;)
