Very carefully worded, don't you think?

Yep, wouldn't it have been easier to just put not available to BT Sport viewers on Virgin Media?

As for offers. As you know all down to retentions and who you speak too.

Thanks people.

I wonder if I should chance retentions or email the ceo.

What's on the BT sport free channel? Is it off air most of the time?

Emailing the CEO to simply get a discount will probably mean you get ignored.

Retentions would surely be best

You have your opinion but I always email the CEO and you then get put onto their staff and have always got excellent discounts from them. Retentions are a waste of time.

Happy to let you know what I pay for my 152Mb BB, 2 tivo, 1 V+, tv xl and phone xl

MutleyF 26-08-2015 11:34

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2

I do think personally there should be no retention deals - you either have services at the going rate, or you move on in the same way we do with gas or electric suppliers.

Appreciate that's just me though, but I do say that there should be some kind of automatic discount in place if you have been a customer for xx number of years. This discount should be applied to all, so this would make it fairer to everyone.

Food for thought ....

pengedragon 26-08-2015 11:54

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2

I've always gone via retentions and been very happy with the outcome, that said I do think we should all be paying the same price for the same services, it does seem an odd way to do things

telegramsam 26-08-2015 12:08

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 2

Agree with you guys, one price for all with a discount for all after a number of years.

Ring retentions and be sensible. I moved from XL and L TV with 50MB BB and M phone (so only TV was reduced). There is a special "retentions" offer available (or was when I called).

Moving to L TV loses plenty of HD channels and several +1 channels plus Sports channels but otherwise most channels are still available be it in SD. History is a channel you will lose completely. Sky Arts was another but that is only in HD now anyway. There were a few others but irrelevant to me so happy enough with the move back to L TV.

Sky Arts is available in SD. Its been moved to the Entertainment section of the EPG (Channel 122).

My friend likes history channel and drama. Is this on m+?

Has anyone got any offers from virgin media due to price increases by threatening to go from xl to medium plus? I don't know if I can get my friend any lovely deals as he's really struggling currently

Handsome regards

Why doesn't he just leave (or threaten to leave) and join Plusnet? History is in their £5pm pack and Drama is on Freeview so on their service as well.
Total cost including line rental would be £36pm if he could live with a fibre speed of 38Mb. https://www.plus.net/tv/
TalkTalk do a similar deal as well, couple of £ per month more expensive and no free/inclusive BT Sport 1.

It should only stay on stage 1 for a few seconds, so yours has got stuck. Turn the power off at the wall (or the rocker switch on the back), then turn back on again.

If it gets stuck again, give VM a call. You may need a technician visit.

Just checked my Tivo box remotely and you are right! Missed that somehow and just saw the HD version only available under XL TV. Thanks for highlighting!

The PDF of the VM channel guide (June 15) is out of date showing Real Lives on channel 122 (it is now on channel 160). I now have the August version (found at https://my.virginmedia.com/content/d...annelGuide.pdf) which gives the updated listing!

So at least I can still watch Sky Arts SD, shame History SD channel is not in the L package as well, H2 is included at least.

Makes sense, I couldn't see how VM would host the regular BT Showcase channel which invites viewers to contact BT to get BT Sport and broadband. :D

It seems unlikely doesn't it? I don't think VM would be happy to have a channel promoting AMC which its customers can't get at the moment.

That depends on them meeting their latest deadline to get back on air (31/8/15) due to their "disruption to service" (looking increasingly unlikely). VM are now getting impatient.

Because BT bid the highest unlike vm BT and SKY create or go for channels whereas vm tend to then leech of SKY and BT and other companies.

Well, they could always go for an exclusive deal with Starz or Showtime, I suppose, both Premium US networks in the same ilk as HBO and AMC.

However many of their notable shows have been picked up by other UK broadcasters. Still Starz has a couple of good shows not picked up in the UK yet; Power and Magic City. Still, AMC only have two noteworthy new shows on BT, Rectify and The Walking Dead spin off (Amazon Prime has the rights to a couple of other good, new AMC shows)

http://www.starz.com/originals

http://www.sho.com/sho/series

VM probably think that with most shows already tied up with other UK broadcasters, it's not worth it. BT obviously think differently.

http://www.starz.com/originals

http://www.sho.com/sho/series

VM probably think that with most shows already tied up with other UK broadcasters, it's not worth it. BT obviously think differently.

Had a quick flick though the epg today and AMC looks good it is also showing shows such as mad men, the shield and mostly movies however it isn't a 24hr channel as listings are for 7pm - 5:30am for each day.

It'll be the usual "nothing to see here" honestly, Virgin are being left in a trail of dust by Sky/BT , Amazon Prime, etc etc, time for the cord to be cut me thinks.......:td:

Im not up to speed in how BT is sold on plusnet; if its direct then I can see them getting it.

VM is a totally different kettle of fish with its wholesaling of BT I can really see them holding onto this one like what Sky have done with Encore and Atlantic. They are in it to get customers from VM/Sky for their broadbands they arent likely to hand over their baragining chips that easily for a few extra quid on a wholesale agreement

Plusnet includes BT Sport 1 in its basic pack but charges an extra fee for the full BT Sport pack. Neither Plusnet's basic pack or its BT Sport pack currently includes AMC.
Plusnet sells these channels directly to the public so in effect it is acting as a wholesaler like VM. Except Plusnet is owned by BT!
ITV Encore and AMC are different from Sky Atlantic in that they're not owned by broadcasters and have simply taken a sum of money to be exclusive for a period of time.

They'll probably wait until there's actually a half-decent selection of UHD content available to them.

Me too but showing what? I really can't see BT allowing their sports channel to be wholesaled on another network, for such a niche product the numbers just couldn't add up, they would know it is better to use it as a USP and build and grow subscriptions on the back of it, Same goes for Sky.

I'm guessing that some channels will launch in 4K and VM will show those. I can see channels like Discovery and National Geographic being early adopters. Maybe ITV too. Then there's Netflix of course. It's a chicken and egg situation as HD was too.

Spot on. ATM, the only 4K material is via Netflix and Amazon, which you get via apps on your 4K TV anyway.

As I think MM said, films could be another option. but if Sky started a 'Sky Movies 4K' channel, there is no way they would let VM have it. Maybe VM's PPV movies provider could include 4K movies?

VM will need to get a 4K box at some stage because Sky and BT are launching one and customers won't want to feel left behind. But the usefulness of a VM 4K box, ATM, is at best, minimal.

I wouldn't expect those channels to introduce 4K anytime soon , in my opinion 2017 at the earliest , Netflix and Amazon is available to most people buying new 4K sets anyway.

As you say Netflix and Amazon are available on your 4k TV already, as for films if you have Amazon or Netflix you will see very few movies available in 4k, that to is a situation where a studio doesn't want a new film to be available in 4k cinema quality for a cheap subscription, they want to be able to physically sell it for £25 when UHD blu-ray comes out, and the time and money that will be required to re-scan back catalogues will mean only films they can sell a lot of will be mastered first., don't expect to see a dedicated 4k film channel for many years, if ever.

People like to access services via one remote control so I can see Netflix being a selling point - although I appreciate it would also be available on TVs.
I can see nature documentaries being good for 4K as they fit in well with the demographic of subscribers plus have great longevity. Discovery is a strategic partner of Liberty Global (whatever that means) so you think the two could work together on something here.

But surely it's as easy to access Netflix in 4K from your TV and probably quicker , I would hardly class it as a selling point when the majority of new 4K TVs offer access to both Netflix and Amazon in 4K.

I fully agree about documentaries looking good in 4K and Discovery are already filming in it , the problem is 4K will cost companies fortunes and I don't see many looking to set individual TV channels up anytime soon.

I read recently that Discovery had been experimenting with 4K and also considered trying with Eurosport , as you say VM could easily strike a partnership making content available on its On Demand service.

In my opinion 4K will initially be built around premium content , BT are already doing it with certain BT Sports events , from next year Sky will do similar with Sky Sports and possibly other key events (Sky Arts concerts , odd Sky movie etc). I'd be amazed if either broadcaster made there 4K offering available wholesale.

I expect strategic partnerships when 4K becomes more mainstream , most of the pay HD channels originally started in this way.

if virgin can get the sky 4k and bt 4k channels then everything will be good.if not (more then likely)then virgin could be dead in the water.no tv channel as yet come out with a date for a 4k channel(like bbc itv fox etc etc)premium tens to mean live events or new movies like star war 7.hopefully with more people buying, virgin will come out with more information and a plan.

8K is already on the way too, been out in Japan and South Korea for a while now and already Sont, Samsung and LG are testing it in Europe. It'll be here by 2018 http://tech.thaivisa.com/8k-tv-avail...om-2018/10857/ also if you look around you'll see reports of Samsung testing a 11k tv.

HDR is going to be the game changer in my view, where you don't need a massive TV to see the improvement. Given that it is reckoned that you won't see much of a difference between 1080p and 4K at normal viewing distances unless your TV is at least 60-65 inches, how big is an 8k TV going to have to be to gain an advantage?

HDR will give you a better picture independent of size.

Here’s the backstory. We’ve heard about 4K/UHD for years now, but as you probably know, unless the TV is really, really big, or you’re sitting extraordinarily close to it, the perceptible image is similar to 1080p. For this reason, many Hollywood studios sitting on film or similar stock that could be converted to 4K have resisted.

HDR is different. Briefly, HDR expands the range between the brightest and the darkest pixels in a TV set, expanding the contrast to look more like film than video. Many TVs that support HDR will also expand the color space from Rec 709 to Rec 2020 (discussed in our earlier article), so the colors will look richer and deeper. So unlike Plain Jane 4K, the difference doesn’t depend upon how close you sit to the TV, or how big the set is. The difference will be very noticeable even on similarly sized sets viewed from the same distance. So unlike 4K, which has been a pretty big "meh" for most consumers without too much money on their hands, everyone who sees HDR will want it.

Completely agree mate, the 11k tv Samsung are testng is 98inch which is way too big for most living rooms really.
HDR is certainly the better option.

Japanese TV have been trialling 8k broadcasts for a while, they hope to have consumer sets available for a 2020 launch, VM with their fast broadband network should be a major player in 4k and 8k delivery, something tells me they will get left behind.

Ps I have a 65 inch 4k HDR capable TV, I have been playing around with some HDR demos which have obviously been enhanced to provide real pop, but reading an interview with a cinematographer I tend to agree with his view that most of life is dull, your watching a movie set in downtown Harlem, you ain't going to see many highlights that make you go wow, with more pixels though you could maybe feel the grain in the bricks, even at 4k on 65inch I feel I could see more detail than I am being presented with I do feel I need to add some sharpness even though I don't.
