Agreed. I've let my entertainment pass lapse. There are some nice box sets, but they're readily available elsewhere (including, often, my local library). I didn't find myself watching enough on it.

Must admit the service is pretty good. Some surprises I didn't expect to see as part of the subscription like every episode of the Borgias and HBO's Deadwood.

Starting to seriously consider Freeview along with Netflix and Amazon Instant rather than an expensive TV subscription.

I was close to this a month or so ago, but was reigned in by Mrs M who didn't want to lose some of the channels, whilst I wasn't very keen on losing TiVo either. If the cost of watching sport spirals to the sort of money you predicted in the sports thread then I'll have to try convincing her again and consider one of the foreign streaming options.

I'm in a similar position being that I have BT Infinity 2 I'm considering adding BT TV for £7 with a free YouView box however I'll wait until they iron out the recording of internet channels issue.

We already have a retail YouView box so this will be adequate for our other room plus we have Netflix and access to Amazon Prime.

Both VM and Sky are now starting to look really expensive , both suck you in with low introductory charges which increase and with the yearly increase factored in become ridiculous.

Wish you could just take the sports channels and the free-to-air channels,no other subs required. Bet loads of others do too!

We were told by the woman in the Phillipines, that our Tivo box was NOT HD and needed to be changed.

Its about time VM got there act together, as l am certain that they didn't have a clue of what l was talking about.

You can do, you can even have HD sports, I think it costs about £40 for sky sports HD with nothing else but FREEVIEW.

I did this back in February, partly due to the Feb price increase, and partly due to my viewing sources having already become mainly via the internet (having to pay for BT Sport also niggled me).

Using Unblockus gives me access to all Netflix regions, Hulu (for US Network TV shows) and I also have a paid subscription to HBO Nordic. I did take advantage of the Amazon Prime £49 offer, though I've not watched much via Prime so far, but liking the free next day delivery.

Because I have a VM phone, it was cheaper to keep one Tivo with the basic Freeview channels than just have phone and BB, so that takes care of UK Freeview channels. I would have been happy to go without TV from VM and just use catchup via the web if there hadn't been the cost advantage of keeping a Tivo.

This setup works great for me.

id rather virgin media closed the contact centres after 6pm and during the weekend. no point having them open with the foreign call centres. no offence but they dont seem to understand what im saying and dont seem trained in much at all.

Im yet to ever hear anyone say "i had a superb call to vm over the weekend. helpful staff. got a great deal"

it just damages vms reputation keeping them open...

But wht annoyed me so much was the fact that. I kept saying 'are you there' she kept replying, yes, waiting for the system to come up.

You could clearly hear people in the background, talking in a language that l could not understand.

I wasn't rude, but its frustrating that you are trying to explain a problem, and they have no idea what l am saying.

No it's £5.99 a month for the streaming video service.

The £79 a year is for amazon prime unlimited next day delivery for purchases which also includes the video service and a kindle service.

I take it that your Sky 50% discount has ended. Could you not now return to VM as a new customer again with the associated discounts?

It's only £7 a year more for the whole package then.

I took the £49 offer in February as i thought it was too good to turn down and it helps that i have a Kindle so get a free ebook a month.

I'd only rarely bought things off Amazon so didn't think i'd get much use out of the next day delivery but i've bought 2 things in the last month so i think i'm getting my moneys worth, i'm also watching a lot of series i missed first time around. Currently have 1 more season of Battlestar Galactica to watch.

True, but getting through to a robot that can barely splutter a word of coherent English isn't much better. I see no reason why we can't have UK based call centres all the time (even if only for emergencies at certain points). On each occasion I am told that it's becase it's cheaper, but I don't believe it is after the loss of dissatisfied customers, pointless engineer callouts etc are factored in.

I am right in thinking that if I wanted to add movies on for a month, as I already have Sports and the SKY HD sub, it would only be an extra £7 for a month? Thinking of adding it on August 23, as relative coming down for birthday and then cancelling in September once the month is up.

If so, that would make an £81 bill £88?

Yes, you're correct in that it should be just an extra £7.00.

I've never been keen on Liev Schreiber who plays Ray Donovan. Interestingly enough however I do like his voice over work. He does most of the HBO sports documentaries including the 24/7 boxing series.

I simply can't stand Jon Voight or Elliott Gould. Never enjoyed watching them at all.

Update from a Virgin Media source:

Sky Sports is increasing by £2 from 1st September, Movies and HD price not changing.

Those people with the season ticket offer or Big Kahuna and Big Daddy bundles are not affected by this increase.

Also Sky Sports has confirmed that Sky Sports 4 and Sky Sports 4 HD will become known as Sky Sports Ryder Cup and Sky Sports Ryder Cup HD on Virgin Channels 505 and 515 for two weeks from September 18th 2014.

Hi, staffs lad. Personally, I find more than enough to watch. You mention The Walking Dead, but that's already been on Fox, so I wonder if you are making the best use of your TIVO for recordings.

It makes sense to trawl through a TV magazine each week (I don't use the EPG for this purpose as it takes too long), and pick out the programmes that you are interested in. They do build up very quickly if you record everything of interest to you, but the middle of summertime isn't the best time to do this as there is a lot of junk on at this time of year.

You have to do your recordings every week, but you will be surprised how quickly they build up. Look at all the channels you have available to you, not just the main terrestrials.

I am still watching material that I recorded last autumn, and this will easily sustain me through the sterile summer months. Otherwise, I think you are paying for a facility that you are not using to its best advantage.

I am watching things from last week in March on my V+ Box (when I can do so).

Yes, MB and I did the same when I had the V+. However, now I have my TIVO with its huge capacity for recordings, I am able to record much more and as a result I am having the best viewing experience I have ever had.

I 2nd that OB.

I dont really scroll through TV mags, but there is a website that I use to find out what's upcoming throughout the year. I find it useful when looking for a new series to watch or when one is due to return. It might not be for everyone, but I think it's worth a look. I have posted the link.

I can see this part of the forum becoming really quite quiet, due to the fact that Virgin have done really well recently in regards to obtaining all the Sky sports channels in HD, all that's left for them now is to try and secure Atlantic, but imho that ain't going to happen anytime soon!

Yeah, there is very little now. A few HD variants and SA and Encore are all we are seriously missing now. If we get an Amazon Prime app as well, and if the next major TIVO update brings the faster menus, I can not see what VM can do to improve the TV side of things. They have done a very good job in recent years in my eyes.

I agree mate :)

Part of me is being HD greedy, where I would like a HD variant of every channel that we have. Sky even has the HD version of the Food Network :D
I know not everyone feels the same, so its not really a big issue, as we do have the HD variant for nearly all of the major channels :D

Faster menus would be great, sometimes it can be a bit sluggish, but not enough to put me off.

yes im being picky. but my point is there are still a few gems sky customers have which we dont but vm seem to not be interested in pursuing. i wonder who or what influences these decisions?

haha that's class, Vince :D

These channels, like with my HD Greediness, VM may think in a financial sense they are not worth going after.

I'm just guessing because, of course, I know nothing of TV channels and costs :dunce: lol

Yup. Remember not that long ago when our HD menu consisted of BBC HD and.... BBC HD.

VM have come a LONG way since then.

All we need is a quicker, dynamic EPG and forthem to sort out the ongoing BBCi issue and I'm a happy chappy...

1.5 million Indians live in the UK, so it's a big market for VM. Far fewer Germans and Italians.

As for Fox News, there are a lot of foxes, but they don't tend to subscribe to cable. They probably use dustbin lids instead. :)

Thanks for that link, really helpful especially as I now know I've missed the first episode of a new show I've been waiting for, Chicago PD.

I set a wishlist for it ages ago but put it as HD only, no way did I expect 5USA to pick it up seeing as Chicago Fire was so popular on Living. Hopefully it will be on 5OD and I can watch it tonight.

Thanks again

I'm not sure how it works, Vince.

But I did notice that Sky have a lot more HD variants for channels that may not have a big audience, like the Food Network for example, that are nowhere to be seen on VM. Not sure the reasons behind it though....has to be money??

The main reasons are that it works out cheaper per viewer to broadcast on satellite and that Sky cannot stop anyone who meets the required conditions from being added to their EPG, whereas VM can.

Ah ok, cool. Thanks for the info.

Do you think it's more down to the broadcasters not wanting to pay, rather then VM stopping them from putting their HD variants on the EPG?

I wasn't sure if bandwidth for broadcasting the HD channels would have been a factor too, but I guess not.

I wasn't sure if bandwidth for broadcasting the HD channels would have been a factor too, but I guess not.

It depends on the channel involved. Some, such as the shopping channels, pay to be on VM, some are cost neutral, such as the the BBC channels and some are paid by VM to be on the system, such as Discovery.

Again, the reasons why particular HD variants are missing vary. The channel may be in a contractual agreement to be exclusive on one particular platform for a length of time, such as ITV Encore HD, the channel owner may be literally or effectively refusing to allow VM access due to unreasonable carriage costs charged eg Sky Atlantic HD or it may be that both parties cannot agree carriage terms for a whole variety of reasons (including financial viability) eg MUTV HD.

AFAIK, VM don't have any bandwidth constraints that are preventing them launching any new channels as they have been upgrading their network behind the scenes.

ITV have had to do some re-gigging since Encore launched and with the launch of BE coming. Looks like ITV2 is going to be more comedy focused with ITV 3 becoming more general. We are already seeing that with them showing Long Lost Family, Love Your Garden, Dickinson's Real Deal and the soap omnibus showings on ITV3 now.

I fully expect Big Brother to show up on ITV Be. Viacom have already said they are committed to upping the quality of shows on Channel5 and have given them a sizable budget to do so. The rights are up for grabs after the next celeb series and it has been proven that it can hold an audience of between 1-2 million for the non celb shows and 2-4million for the celeb ones. Any show getting that on ITV Be i am sure they would be extremely happy.

It will be interesting to see what ITV show on ITV2. The shows they have bought in Mom, Dads, TVOD, Viral Tap have all been quite poor

On the subject of HD channels I`d love to see channels broadcasting +1`s in HD. If it happens what`s the betting they`d be on Sky only?

Lets hope the channel comes to Virgin, my misses would rather have these sorts of programs than anything that Sky Atlantic would show

It will be the new home of the ITV2 semi-reality show The Only Way Is Essex"

Can we start a petition to not have this channel anything that would remove the only way is essex has got to get loads of support :)

Will not happen - Virgin Media (LG) own about 7% of ITV now.;)

Maybe Discovery and LG will give ITV some All3Media shows now to full up ITV2 and ITV Be from October.
