Will look into that, but a key might be expensive to purchase. A quick look before I go to bed shows a key costs $119.99.

Thanks for the link though.

Which OS are you running with a legit serial? Use Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder if you're having trouble finding your OS key.

8 Pro, but apparently a Windows 8 serial won't work to install 8.1 without 8 first.

Popped in for a pint today and had a chat with the staff: Apparently the chavs and brats stayed till 11pm and virtually wrecked the place. The police were called out TWICE!

Now if that was my bar they'd have been chucked out at 4:30 and banned for life. In my town it's banned in one, banned in all. I couldn't believe that people could be so badly behaved: Adults and brats.

Still don't know if the company I work for is going to be sold.

But fuff that I have more important thing to worry about.

(NOT a moan) Like doing a full days work, come home cook tea, put clothes in washing machine, do the weekly shopping as my mums not allowed to do anything until mid January.

Re: Moans and Pet Hates part 8

Electrical retail customer service. Allow me to explain...

Last night, I get a call from my mother telling me her microwave has waved its last. So, being the dutiful son (and living the closest to an electrical shop of any description) I do an online reserve at the nearest Currys (30 miles away). The email says my order will be ready for collection within 1 hour. As it takes just about that to drive through traffic to get there I was quite sure it would be a case of walk in, give my reservation number, pay for microwave and then walk out with it.

When I got there the shop was pretty much empty, so I ask one of the shop floor staff to help me with the order, expecting to be shown to the till and have the microwave brought from "out the back" or similar. Oh how wrong i was....

First of all the chap leads me to the microwave display and asks me to help him find the right one. I found one which looked similar to the website picture but was labeled as a "conventional oven" for £60 or so more than the website listed it. Naturally I assumed this wasn't the microwave oven I was looking for. 10 mins of looking later, and resorting to checking the model number of the order against the whole gamut of microwaves it turns out the one I'd spotted the first time was in fact a microwave, rather than conventional oven, and was indeed up for £70 and not £130.

So the chap now grabs the microwave and takes it towards the checkout, but not before bashing it in to the odd end of row display on the way.

And of course I was asked if I wanted a £15 extended warranty on it...

Basically, it was doing everything but actually heating food (panel display, fan, turntable rotation all working). The internal light hasn't worked for years, and because it was a Kenwood (read "Currys own brand") the chances of finding any non-basic spares for it are very slim. They also needed a working microwave for sterilising my sister's baby's bottles this weekend, so getting another one was the simplest, most effective option.

heero_yuy 10-12-2014 10:21

Re: Moans and Pet Hates part 8

Glad you checked. :tu: I've fixed a lot of microwaves that were dead by replacing the internal fuse that most have fitted.

From the evidence it sounds like the magnetron or its PSU has failed. Even if you could get spares it's not the sort of thing to tackle unles you're knowlegable about high power RF and high voltage supplies.

I know enough about magnetrons to know not to even consider getting anywhere near one!

The install at my house was done in the same way. Unfortunately this was before I bought it. When I raised the matter with sky on twitter their answer was basically "just because you're still getting sky junkmail through the letterbox doesn't mean that it was a sky installer who put the dish up"

I replied that no-one else would be quite that rubbish at the job...

The first lot that came around here a while ago to fit HD decided to remove (steal) my own freeview dish and LNB which was sitting a couple of feet away from the Sky owned dish. I wasn't here at the time but you can imagine the subsequent phone call to Sky and the threat to prosecute their contractors for theft.

This last lot of cowboys were installing multi-room. Hopefully they'll send someone around in their employ who knows how to use a hammer and with the good sense not to trot out the waterproof coax excuse.

rhyds 10-12-2014 22:46

Re: Moans and Pet Hates part 8

The problem is that Sky installers are, like BT/Openreach subbies, on piecework. For them, the object of the game isn't to do the job right, its to do the job quickly, as more jobs in a day = a better wage. This leads to some serious bodgery.

Worse than that, Sky installers also have to ensure their ladders are secure while working, therefore they have to bolt the ladder to the house or to the ground. This is checked afterwards by an inspector, so the hole will be clearly obvious and visible otherwise if it is missed the installer can lose their contract.

Unfortunately the only way around it is to either do it yourself or get an independent installer in and basically ban Sky's people from touching the cabling. I'm going to be recabling my install at some point, as it doubt the coax will last terribly long sitting in the bottom of my guttering.

had a real bad smell in my front room for a couple of weeks its not always there but when it is it stinks like fish ,any hoo i got on all fours and had a good sniff around and noticed it stank near the plug socket and there was a tell tail sign of a discolored spot on the socket which was quite hot ,so i took it apart after disconnecting the power supply to find one of the negative wires hardly making contact and the back of the socket badly charred .

its the fist in a daisy chain of sockets for the ground floor so it has to deal with all the power flow of several sockets- the more things i turned on the greater the resistance and the greater the heat produced by the fault and as you say it could have caused a house fire .

Fingers crossed they don't have cause to keep you in dilli. Just give them a sample of those Carols you have been practicing and I am sure they will see the sense of letting you stay at home to serenade those who fully appreciate your errrrr fine singing voice. :) + hugs for tomorrow.

We were told that once the op couldn't take place tomorrow and the reason they had to delay the operation until the new year was because of specialist staff shortages over Christmas. Glad John isn't having it tomorrow if he would have been in there with too few staff to cope with any complications.

Well I just saw a program (worlds most dangerous roads) that proves EE are the crappiest provider on the planet.

I live in a big town just 20 miles or so from central London and my signal level is dire, I just saw a program and they were in the town of Mesti which is a region of Sevaneti in Georgia.

It is in the middle of nowhere, and yet you saw a guy in military fatigues using a mobile phone.

Sorry to hear of your loss, dilli, shame it had to be this time of year.

My moan is having to have loads of dental work done - 2 extractions this morning, including a front tooth, which has left me with a huge gap. Then back next week for fillings & some x-rays to see if anything else needs doing!!!

Used to get the same argument from our son and, to me, letting him stay off school just because he considered it a waste of time wasn't a lesson I wanted him to learn.

I always made the last day of term a reason to celebrate with a special evening meal and he would get to choose what we would eat. It must have been a credit to my culinary skills that he invariably chose Shepherd's Pie with red cabbage. Well either a credit or maybe he decided that was one choice I wouldn't burn. :D

Yeeha Drew will be going to school tomorrow, after a long discussion with him he now is aware he needs to go although I did fib to him I told him the Head teacher could withdraw him from the China trip and I would/could lose my deposit if I kept him off school for no reason. Well it was just a wee white lie but it worked. Goodness me I need a cuppa after that as I have never experienced any of my boy's wishing to stay off school on the last day before and was shocked by this request to say the least.

Both lanes of a local road were blocked by a van sitting diagonally with the engine running. Lots of drivers were getting very annoyed (loads of honking and yelling).

Then an ambulance arrived... the van driver had passed away at the wheel.

It took the police a further 35 minutes to turn up and eventually sort the traffic out.

Why is it always the police that arrive last at most incidents I've witnessed?

In this case they were probably contacted by ambulance control once the ambulance was already enroute.

Where I grew up there was a narrow bridge on a trunk road which was a regular accident scene. The bridge was also right on the border between the counties of Powys and Gwynedd.

When there was a crash the ambulance and fire crews came from the Dyfed-Powys area (about 3 miles), however the police attendance came from North Wales Police, who's nearest station was a good 20 miles away.

I don't drive, but this would have wound me up as a passenger, but there is a T junction in the next road to mine, where a road joins the main road through the town. This morning, the main road was blocked (as it is most mornings), but only one way. Someone in a Corsa wanted to turn right (the direction that was blocked). So, they decided not to wait politely behind the line, therefore allowing traffic going the other way to proceed. Nope, they went right out into the main road and stopped in the middle of the lane, thus blocking it. With a few minutes, that lane was blocked solid as well. All because a Corsa driver decided they were going to try and push their way into the traffic.

The ironic thing is, had they fired up a Sat Nav or bought a Map, they would have found a route using back roads that would have avoided the main road totally, and would have actually got where they were going quicker without disruping anyone else.

Don't think I will bother watching Series 11.

I do not watch this Marc

Is it so wrong of me to send him to school on the last day or am I just too strict.

Sometimes they enjoy the last day, once they get there, ;)

What a terrible thing to happen to the Van driver. His family will be devastated. If the rest are blocked in traffic, You are still alive, Think about it,

The manager and one of the nurses at mums care home. She's got maybe a few days left and they are the most uncaring people I've ever met. I was shaking with rage this morning, but she's too ill to move so all I can do is suck it up and try and bite my lip.

Cheers

Well then, generic emotion non denominational period salutations to you, person.

Edit: Pet hate of the week: Being asked, every time I have a non alcoholic drink why I am not drinking, by the same person. The answer doesn't change after the first time :/

Fingers crossed you have no problems either getting there or getting home again dilli.

I have to attend my Haematology Clinic first thing tomorrow for a blood check. Hopefully, as I am feeling fine, I should be back home in under an hour. Then it's 'put the car away' time for at least a few days as I don't intend to go anywhere outside walking distance unless I am forced to.

Connectivity desert that is West Penwith. ( Land's End) All I can get is a very slow GPRS piggyback and even then the sockets are usually all used up so I cant get the net or e-mail. At least I've grabbed one today to get the mail and have a quick look-in here.

Even then I have to sit out in the conservatory to get a reliable signal and without the sun it's bleeding cold. If the sun does shine then it's roasting hot and I can't see the screen properly.
