Some Virgin viewer PM me on Friday night with the following

Quote:

Hi MB,
Just thought I'd share some interesting stuff. I received a letter from sky this morning asking me to return to them. I would get 50% off any offer for 12 months, but the offer only lasts till Thursday 22nd of May.
Do you think that's maybe when VM might get the missing sky HD channels then?
Thanks for info but the Sky Sports HD will launch sometime after May.

christ we're scrapping the barrel here arent we with channel launches!

I would not think the hard working boys and girls in the Forces will think a forces channel launching will be "scraping the barrel."

Even if a one hour looping advert means more people enlist and make the jobs of the current service personnel slightly "easier", I am sure they will be pleased VM are "scraping the barrel."

Is there any point in sky keeping sky 3D and sky one +1 and pick+1 and so on exclusive. Just can't see people signing up now just to watch sky 3d or pick +1. Is sky 3D on basic deal or is on another pack?

Would be great if there were still trying to broker a wholesale deal.

Not that i know off but there is talk about more services coming such as Amazon prime so maybe VM will strike a deal once they have other providers onboard.

Yes, a collections package including a number of streaming services would be good. I would expect the additional material of the ITV Player that we don't currently get to be part of that.

At no point did I criticise the "hard working boys and girls in the forces" so please do not try and twist my words harry. I don't know why you inserted that in over a point about the merits of a channel.

A one hour looping advert for one hour a day is scrapping the barrel in terms of being an appropriate channel as far as I'm concerned. If that's what the channel will be. We don't know yet.

"I'm not wanting to join the army...hang on a 1 hour looping advert... I'll join the army".

I have respect for our military friends so please don't try to suggest otherwise by your wording. I don't have respect for pointless channels which no one will ever find or watch

 to the Gary Neville reference:)

At no point did I say you were criticizing the forces or their personnel. Quite how I have twisted your words evades me, perhaps you can explain how I have?

I just feel that those in the services will find the channel useful and will not think VM are "scraping the barrel."

You have every right to think VM are scraping the barrel, but I don't think they are and I am sure all the serving personnel, ex-personnel and their families wont think so either. I am happy to be corrected on this point.

You are right, we don't know what the channel will be yet, so I can not figure out why you would criticize it before it's launch.

I struggle to see how a channel aimed at helping boost morale or figures in the armed forces can be classed as pointless though.

"Hm, I am not sure if I want to join the Army. I know, before I make an appointment at my local recruitment centre and waste their time, I will just watch this handy one hour video to see if it helps make my mind up first. If it does not I can still go down the recruitment centre after anyway"

I have no major problems with you thinking the channel is scraping the barrel, I just think many people will not think it is scraping the barrel.

I am happy to agree to disagree if you are?

Handsome Regards

Harry Redknapp

And where there's brass, there's metal. Which is why it's far more lucrative to be scrapping barrels than scraping them. :D

Does anyone have a 4K tele?

I was looking at them in the shop yesterday....and yes the picture does look amazing.

Will VM be pioneers, or do you think they will just secure 4K content as it comes available from third parties..e.g Sky?

Just curious on everyone's thoughts on the new technology and the part VM plays.

I've got money burning a hole in my pocket for a 4K TV. However it can keep burning until HDMI 2.0 is ratified and included in a new TV rather than promised as a later add-on, even if it's free.

If 4K is going to have acceptable refresh rates, we'll also need a new generation of boxes with HDMI 2.0 too. So VM I would predict a whole new VIP++ tier where people are willing to pay not only for the content, but a new TiVo model too. This would have to be cloud-based as no hard drive in the world would be big enough. :D

You'd need a new box anyway. The current boxes can't decode 4K resolution.

(Why is this in the CSTVT thread???)

The new Panasonic ultra HD sets have 1 hdmi 2.0 connection, if there was someway of getting native 4k content onto them I'd have had one already, $ly are rumoured to be close to testing broadcast of 4k content but as been said don't be thinking of 4k coming to VM anytime in the next few years given a new box would need to be launched.

Well, one thing we do know, VM won't risk launching the channels just before or during the World Cup just in case anything does go wrong. (World Cup is from Thursday June 12 to Sunday July 13.) If after May then that only leaves one week in June, w/c Monday 2.

Hope so, theone. It makes sense to have similar channels together.

Be good if they could put the HD channels first too. I think a lot of people are wanting this.

I bet it has! Went to dinner last night with various people, including my source. He claimed to know nothing about the missing Sky HD channels, like he did with BT Sport- just made a joke about it as he knows I'm not into sport. Looks to me like these channel launch dates have been subject to an embargo agreement, like the launch of BT Sport (probably down to Sky, but this is just conjecture on my part).

But then we come back to vanity (or is it ego), if he can't post something, what can possibly be gained by telling everyone he know's something they don't?

I agree we don't gain anything.

I don't want to put MB down because I know of the hard work he puts in and the info he gives out is normally spot on.

I just think to stop people getting on his back and possibly getting annoyed, the DNP Orders shouldnt be mentioned.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK MB!! :)

Some people can read into it differently, Den.
They may think MB is trying to be popular, trying to stick two fingers up by saying he knows something they don't.

That's not how I feel, but I can see how it can be interpretted like that.

I think MB and the others on here like yourself, who provide the info for us, do an amazing job. This forum used to be full of people, just dont want to see it slide downhill because there is info out there that cannot be posted.

l think it reminds me a bit of when a government introduces a new policy and as like all new policies it never seems to please everybody and there's nowt MB can do about that.

Without making it binding on MB, could we do a poll on the subject? If most people did want DNA notifications posted, this would give ammunition to MB who could cite the poll in response to any criticisms.

This could be a good idea, MB could certainly shut up some people who question him hahaha.

I have a mixed view on DNP Orders. On one hand there is a little buzz of excitement as something new could be on the way, and on the other hand a little disappointment as we won't find out until anything is confirmed.

Before we go completely off topic or get told off....I can't wait for Sports HD to arrive, hopefully for the Monaco Grand Prix ;)

More Sky Sports HD Channels will launch by August.

As of March 2014 the regional BBC HD Channels has still to get approved by the BBC Trust.

Yes, I would like to know when all the BBC regions are going HD as it is a pain the backside to change to SD after watching the national news.

Does your new DNP Order refer to any new channels coming to VM?

Typing in 101 at the end of the national news in HD to the London regional news isn't much effort, having the local London region in HD is hardly worth the effort

So, if the theory goes that VM won't launch any new channels whilst significant sporting events are occurring for fear of something untoward occurring (minimal likelihood but massive PR problem if it does, who won't forget ITV HD's Tic-Tacs fiasco?) then we have:
- World Cup: Thursday June 12-Sunday July 13
- Wimbledon: Tuesday June 24-Monday July 7
- Commonwealth Games July 23-Sunday August 3
This would suggest to me dates of w/c 2 June or w/c 14 July for the remaining for Sky Sports HD channels to launch.

Perhaps there should also be a DNP order on DNP orders, at least that would bring an end to the "I know something you don't know" speculation.

I'm sure that MB is too much of a gentleman to break the embargo. Besides, posting without permission as you suggest would be the quickest way to ensure that MB is no longer kept in the loop ;)

Confirmed: Forces TV to launch on Virgin Media.

Media Boy HQ has just found the following web site http://forces.tv/

Media Boy HQ has not seen any info on when Forces TV will launch or they Virgin Channel number - but DS Forum is reporting that they are testing on Virgin Media and Sky right now.

Morning all,

With the news of Sky Sports HD plus the 2 news channels coming soon, I am surprised VM havent pushed harder for Sky 3D.

I remember reading that VM was trying to push it more, with more 3D on-demand content coming.

Or maybe they have and we just don't know about it lol

Sky probably did not want to do a deal with Virgin regarding their 3D channel UC.

That's a shame, it would be a good acquisition for VM. Before I left Sky about 4years ago, they were adding more and more content onto the channel.

3D has still remained a niche product and l cannot see this changing UC as apart from Sky many others have either withdrawn from it or simply are not interested in it anymore.

Yeah I still think there is not a buy in to 3D unlike HD and 4k, certainly think it will be a time but only when the technology improves to the extent you dont need the glasses. Out of interest are we the only country that has a dedicated 3D channel or do others countries have one
