I get a much better picture on my Apple TV but I would like to enjoy the extra quality that Dolby Digital Plus audio brings to the TiVo. I have a Chromecast which gives me DD+ audio and HD picture but to use it I have to unplug the Apple TV which is used for other things. I assume the internal 10Mb modem can't cope? |
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
Working fine here - after a minute the definition is to "1080 Super HD"
I would get your signal levels for TiVo checked. Quote:

Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
Quote:
The main reason that streaming services use DD+ is that they can lower the bit rate to get the same audio quality as regular DD (and, also, 7.1 is possible with DD+). It is possible that the servers that Netflix use to feed the Apple TV's is sending the regular DD at a higher bitrate than they send DD+ to for other devices, as Netflix produce about 99 different encodes for any given title to accommodate different devices and resolutions. |
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
Quote:
|
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
It sounds better, DD+ is a much more efficient codec for streaming then DD and the bit rate can be a lot higher.
|
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
Quote:
And, as I said, the stream that Netflix use to feed the Apple TV could use an equivalent quality regular DD stream to the streams sent to DD+ devices. So just because the Apple TV gets DD rather than DD+, it does not follow that it doesn't sound as good. |
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
Reducing file size doesn't necessarily mean that the quality has been redunced, flac reduces file size but is bit for bit copy of the original, MPEG4 produces file sizes that are smaller then MPEG2 but the quality is far superior. I don't know if they are reducing the file size but the DD+ mixes through my AV amp sound better then the normal DD ones.
|
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
Quote:
it would be interesting to know the result, because given that Netflix feed the Apple TV different streams to those used on other Netflix DD+ capable devices, I can see no reason why Netflix can't enable the same sound quality. Otherwise, I imagine there would be a lot disgruntled Apple TV users if Netflix audio quality for them was inferior to other Netflix devices. |
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
I have a 360 set up so I can use different regions and the Tivo for UK Netflix. The 360 only outputs DD and 720p, the sound output through the Tivo sounds better. Do they actually feed different streams? DD+ is backward compatible with DD, so if your device can't play DD+ it just plays back the DD track?

It was a concern to me, as my bedroom AV amp (my old Yammy RX-V1500) can't decode DD+. Fortunately, my WDTV Live SMP sends regular DD via optical out, so not a problem. I have another WDTV Live SMP in the lounge which sends DD+ via HDMI to a Yammy RX-1900, which can decode it. It can get a little confusing at times. |

Amazon Fire TV box launching in UK.
£79. But Prime members can get it for £49 if ordered by Monday. I've seen October reported as the ship date. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KQEJBS...I3GYIW9BRSL6NV |

You can get Amazon video via a PC, some blueray Players, and I (think) some smart TVs. my old Sony 370 BR player gets it, but not with 5.1 audio. |
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
Quote:
You can use it from browser as well (which again is the same as Netflix). So no, you do not 'need' the box to access Prime. The issue which actually gets resolved for me is that I want one box that does BOTH Netflix AND Amazon Prime Instant. I don't have a Smart TV, and although most things (Tivo, WD Live, etc) have Netflix they dont have the Amazon one. I have a WD TV Live which again has iplayer, Netflix and I can browse local video. This box has everything I want, and for £49 its a bargain. The slightly confusing thing is the difference between 'Prime' and 'Prime instant' subscription. Prime is a £79.99 per year subscription which includes Prime Instant and gives you free one day delivery. Prime Instant is a £5.99 a month subscription which just gives you the Streaming video service. |

The WD Live was ideal for Local streaming, Iplayer, and Netflix, with the TIVO doing all the rest (and netflix). Latest firmware knackered the Local streaming after using iplayer which pretty much sealed its fate for me. So Fire TV here I come! |
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
Surprised they didn't get iPlayer, ITV player or 4oD for the launch, especially as it's only really Android with some modifications. Would have thought a lot of UK consumers would rule it out without those.

I have not seen any confirmation that Amazon are actively looking at this as an option, and I am now concerned that the arrival of their new box may dissuade them from going down this route. A bluray player is quite possibly the best option for just 'one extra box' alongside Tivo as I'm pretty sure you can get them with both Netflix and Amazon video. Many will allow you to change the DNS settings for use with Unblockus etc. They also have some catchup services (though those are covered by Tivo anyway). Some will also stream networked video via DLNA. And, of course, they will play any DVD/Bluray discs that you have. The Amazon box is nice and small, but at full price, it is in the smart bluray price range which is capable of more. |
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
You could also add the game consoles into that category granted they are more expensive but if your a gamer also they'll do all the things you mention.
I wouldn't hold my breath for a DVR which gives you access to all the streaming services , I've read whispers that YouView are in talks with the likes of Netflix and Amazon they already have access to all terrestrial catch up and Now TV movies (SD only at moment) however I can't see this happening overnight. |
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
Quote:
I tend to not think of those because I don't use a games console and for someone who doesn't, the prices of such things are just not worth it when a sub £100 box will do everything less games. Actually, games is one thing that the Amazon Fire TV does that a BR player likely doesn't. Though not being a gamer, I'm not sure how they rate. |

Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
Given that the forthcoming TiVo software release changes things a lot with the move away from Flash / Air to Haxe it wouldn't be worth it to release new apps right now so maybe there are new ones ahead. There is still apparently support for Flash but for more complex apps (e.g. non games) i assume it doesn't make sense to use it anymore.
Can't remember if this has been shared before here, but this is the developer presentation on the new TiVo software https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8Bp...ature=youtu.be. Includes running a cloud DVR version of the TiVo software on an Amazon Fire TV box. Amazon have made it clear that they're after the cable companies and the main goals for the box of better search, greater openness and good performance were all a reaction to the weaknesses of current STBs. Reviews seem to suggest it hasn't quite got things right on the search and navigation yet though. |
Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
To be honest, as Old Boy says, all we want is to be able to access all the Netflix, Amazon, etc etc offers, through the Tivo, or whatever Virgin has available, people want it simple, they don't want to be adding all sorts of different boxes cluttering up their living room just so they can access some decent TV shows.

Re: Netflix/Streaming Services
Remember this request is coming from a 3rd party supplier not the content owners. The way Netflix bosses seem to act in public makes me think they would be more then capable of telling this VoD supplier where to go.
Quickest solution would be is set up a service in Australia but I hear it is very hard to do anything down there with how monopolistic it is there with video and TV rights. |

Re: Netflix/Streaming Services

Long ago, WWF (As it was then) was mainly shown on Sky One, but over time moved towards Sky Sports, with Sky One taking the 2nd tier stuff mainly. Of course it's a fix, all pro wrestling is, but it's also fun and while I no longer watch it, I have fond memories of the likes of the Undertaker & Co. At the end of the day Sky put the "top tier" Raw/Smackdown on Sky Sports to drive people towards the premium channels to gain more revenue, not the other way around, so complaining about it being on Sky Sports is counter intuitive. I bet if WWE wasn't on Sky Sports then the revenue lost would be greater than what they pay for the rights so would end up with Sky having a lower budget for other sports. Still, the WWE having their own streaming solution may jeopardise this, which would show that wrestling fans will pay a premium for the content they want and I'm sure the UK WWE Network will be quite successful. |

If yout watch WWE then is no pretence that what you are watching is sport.
Their documentaries have made it clear that the title win can be determined a year in advance and story lines are produced with that in mind. It is scripted storylines - just like Coronation Street / EastEnders - and 90% of all tv. If you want to talk about 'fixing' then football, cricket and horse racing spings to mind - so of those events pretend to be undetermind in advance! Quote:
