Thanks for info.

2 things spring to mind. 1. With the impending arrival of Netflix, Virgin appear to be bringing out a larger capacity box just at the point they're providing their customers with more "cloud" based options-not sure I understand why. 2. Does this signal an extension in the contract with TiVo and put to bed any chance of Horizon coming, or was this development always part of the original deal made before Liberty Global arrived?

The cloud is the way they are heading for live TV (Netflix isn't that) but I can see that taking a while, just for rights issues alone to be sorted. The lifetime of any new box will probably be near it's end by the time cloud based live TV is feasible in my opinion. So a new box does make sense even in the overall cloud plan.

Reviews of the USA 3GB Tivo box below, says 6 not 7 tuners but whose bothered on the exact number with that many! Comment about new HTML5 based platform also interesting.

Virgin is currently the cheapest place to get all TV, Sports and Movies channels with the inclusion of BT Sport, however Sky still havent responded to that, instead they raised prices, so it makes sense for them now to milk all their channels for what they are worth, the increased ad revenue, sponsorship etc rather than holding out on meager half a million views when its available to 10 million people.

Sky increasingly need to wholesale their channels to as many providers as possible in order to pay for their increasingly hefty PL bill.

1) For something to be classed as a 'joke' it has to have a comedic element - this does not.

2) "He fell for it" I'm sorry, fell for what? You PM'd him something you told him to be true. He took it at face value. He didn't expect someone who is grown up enough to access the internet and a forum to be so adolescently pathetic as to make something up.

Indeed they are, a new brush sweeps clean and all that. Senior management soon learned after the buyout that LG are nobodys fool and would be streamlining the structure of VM, as well as weeding out any dead wood.

Indeed you are correct bud,I personally know that vm have been in active talks with sky for several months regarding missing channels and have been told on numerous occasions from a good source that talks have been very constructive.i do do believe however that whilst good for us the bt sports deal and now Netflix have caused delays in coming a mutual agreement to suit both parties my source is not aware of a signed deal as yet, however he still believes and hopes that we will see some sky channels in autumn,I am also still being told that there is still no confirmed date for Netflix launch or TiVo update and regards the android app that is nearing a launch date and I have been told we will see it before Xmas.
In respect of the sony deal no major info is about as yet just pure rumours and speciation however my source as told me that we may see an announcement just prior to ps4 launch but he expects just after, there are apparently major plans in the works regarding this in respect of broadband speeds and traffic management and packages and ps4.But only higher management know this info currently.
Whatever happens between now and Xmas this as been a very good and exciting year for vm and will certainly interesting what is in store for us next year,no more info on any amazon/lovefilm deal but from what I have been led to believe both parties are interested in a deal.
Any confirmed info I get to know out of respect to mb I will leave to him to announce,I hope this answers a few peeps questions and I'm am sorry I have not posted this info sooner.
One last thing I have reported to digital spy owners that horrible little trolls comments(you will all know who I refer to if you have been on digital forum) slating both this forum/staff and posters in particular mb,is resent comments are been both nasty and vindictive to say the very least and thankfully this particular poster is not welcome on this forum.
I wish you all a good weekend and let's hope we see some news/goodies over the next few weeks;)

I recieved the info in an email as rumour had begun about job losses, the email was dismissing rumours of job losses however confirmed a shake up would happen. Unfortunately I don't work for the side that is being shook up so it will pretty much be all I will hear for a while, if ever.

I don't know if it will effect TV Channels or whether it's just within staffing. If anything does come up you will hear it through MB.

RichardCoulter 12-10-2013 06:10

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 5.

This is the standard email response being given as to why NOW Music TV won't be on Virgin Media:

"Virgin Media have a limit to how many channels they can service and unfortunately this has limit has already been reached. We're working to make it available as soon as it is possible.

Apologies for any inconvenience. The channel however can still be streamed in the meantime on NOWMusic.com or through our mobile app.

Best, NOW Team."

On the face of it, this makes it sound like VM have run out of capacity, which would be news to me!

If you look closer it says "unable to service", which in reality could mean that there is no room in the business model of VM for this particular channel.

Says he the great defender of the faith but Sky's problems in keeping their customers will feed through into their figures in the coming months and into next year as the competition bites and customers realise that they can get much better bundle deals elsewhere.

All sky do is raise prices in the face of competition, unless they lower them, not likely to happen, they have to milk everything for what they've got, and they can't do that when holding back channels as ad revenue and reach decreases.

Only 5% of Sky Customers actually watch Atlantic on a regular basis, and this is the only missing Sky channel where virgin are missing out on the content. Personally I can't see those 5% causing too much of an issue for Sky has not only is Virgin available in less areas but Sky are getting more and more new customers everyday, if all 5% left, they would have them back in a month or two.

Only 5% of Sky Customers actually watch Atlantic on a regular basis, and this is the only missing Sky channel where virgin are missing out on the content. Personally I can't see those 5% causing too much of an issue for Sky has not only is Virgin available in less areas but Sky are getting more and more new customers everyday, if all 5% left, they would have them back in a month or two.

if sky was bothered about ad revenue they would let others have the channels long time ago there not and if sky was bothered and the crap SA viewing figures it would been on others long time ago too they not they think people chose sky because of SA even though viewing figures contradict that they want people to get sky pay for the boxes and pay the HD charge they don't want to lose customers which they will lose lots if they give VM the withheld channels

It might only be 5% who actually watch the channel, but it's a hell of a lot more who actually cite the channel as a reason for choosing Sky. Whether they end up watching it is pretty immaterial. Sky think it drives a quarter of their subs.

The figure is closer to 7% however between 15% to 20% of SKY customers regularly watch SKY Atlantic shows via on demand and catch up. I've seen the stats as part of a focus group on the channel. Personally I've never watched anything on the channel "live". I tend to record shows or download full boxsets to my SKY+ box.

I think i've got what you said, however;

The only channel which will increase Ad Revenue if on VM will be Sky Atlantic as all the others currently exist in Standard Definition form.

Sky will get money from Virgin Media adding these channels, which is what im saying by milking the channels for all they are worth.

Again, Virgin Media is available in a lot less places than Sky, not many people will now switch from Virgin Media just for Sky Atlantic, and not many people will switch from Sky just because Atlantic is on Virgin Media.

Those on here who said if VM gets Atlantic then they will switch back have also said that they will only do it if the price is better than what Sky can offer, its not Atlantic that will keep them, its the price, so what they did is put the prices up.

I was going with the figure of an average of just over 500,000 views (based on BARB ratings) with a 10 million Sky subscribers (which is a lot less than there actually are), that therefore would be 5%

Everyone has different viewing tastes. Some people love American drama, some people don't. SKY Atlantic isn't for everyone, just like BT Sports being added to the XL package added zero value for non-sports fans. Personally I enjoy some of the programming on Atlantic but most American and period drama I'm looking forward too is on other channels i.e. Walking Dead, Sleepy Hollow, Ripper Street, American Horror Story, The Blacklist, True Blood etc....

Well then, It'll be interesting to see what happens when Now TV launch their Entertainment Package which is currently undergoing beta testing.

The current test involves it being available through the Now TV app on various platforms both live and with on demand content.

That exclusivity certainly appears to be coming to an end even if Sky do own the Now TV service.

Well what will happen is Sky will be able to charge those who want to watch Atlantic content but don't want to subscribe to Sky tv. The kind of people on forums such as this who say "I want Atlantic but not enough to switch supplier". As most people acknowledge, those who would subscribe to Sky for Atlantic have probably already done so. Soon Sky will be able to reach everyone else. Clever stuff.

Yep.

For me it signals intent to accept that they've probably reached saturation point for new subscribers and retentions on the basis of Atlantic (think they always overstated the case anyway).

That suggests to me that there is a strategic decision to maximise income from it by reaching people on other platforms. On that basis, I can assume it is just a matter of time before Sky strike a deal with Virgin.

Not sure where this pricing is coming from, those on the trial aren't being charged. I'd imagine, if the trial isn't just technical in nature, people will be presented with varying costs on their signup screen and subsequently asked if they consider the pricing reasonable.

Personally I found Now TV to be terrible. I got a free movies month and 2 free Sports passes when the app launched on LG TV's. The picture quality is poor, worse than Standard Def TV.

I think if Sky think so highly of their channel, it would make commercial sense to offer just Atlantic on its own (as the other channels are already on most other platforms) and make it stream able through the Now TV app on YouView and a new app through Tivo. That would really show them who is interested in the content.

I'd agree with you ocav, the Now TV picture quality is poor. I don't think I've ever watched a movie without it buffering and stuttering at some point (usually more than once). Used Netflix on the same devices and connection and the difference in quality is vast.

If they can sort out the streaming quality, it would be a good service.

Okay since I have had sky I have watched sky Atlantic but only for a few problem ie ray Donavan, veep, blue bloods, house of lies and soon the tunnel.i seem to watch more on universal, sky 1,alibi and watch.seriously I think universal hd is more needed on vm then sky Atlantic.as others have said none one is going to leave vm now just to get sky Atlantic(I don't think many ever really did)I was told in July that the vm were in talks for sky Atlantic and others and the plan was to have during autumn,I am still being told by my insider that vm still hope to have sometime in autumn and I believe we will still see it.It is planned by sky to launch on now TV during autumn so the exclusive tag as gone and would tie in nicely to start on vm.n

We use Now TV boxes and get great quality pictures and sound.

On some occasions we'll be watching on two boxes whilst other devices are downloading updates or streaming from other services.

We've never had a single problem.

The reason is that there are some good US dramas on there - better quality than on Universal.

However, I do concede, as I always have, that most of the programming I would not watch! But that is the way with digital channels. Mainly rubbish, but with one or two good programmes in a season.
