Interesting piece in today's telegraph concerning Virgin Media's priorities.

Quote:

Mr Berkett expressed relief that Virgin Media had focussed its cash on investing in fibre, rather than following BSkyB down the track of investing in content – suggesting a certain level of sceptisim about BT’s recent £1bn sports rights spree.

“Sport, and football in particular, is highly emotive. Hundreds of millions of pounds swim around each game. The level paid for these rights is quite extraordinary…but it is only part of the product,” he said.

BT’s decision to buy up Premier League football rights is “an interesting move,” he added pointedly. “I’m always of the view, ‘remember who you are’. We are a network. We are an amazing brand but we are a network and we took the view five years ago that we wouldn’t buy content, we’d invest in the network.”

There's no doubt whatever that with increasing competition that the board is set and the pieces are moving with regards to the next few months as all the providers increasingly battle for our buck and l for one expect more happening's in the next few months from Virgin as BT Sports come on board.

@Neil Berkett... what use is a good network if you aint got the product people really want to obtain from it??? When it comes to TV you are a reseller, and as a company investing millions in aquiring and creating content They are going to do their best to deal you out and sell straight to the end consumer, you have nothing really to offer, they just endulge you to keep the competition regulator sweet, in 10 years time Virgin Media will either not exist or will be about as significant to the TV market as Pace and Amstrad ie you will just be another sky delivery system.

Content provision is slowly (and not so slowly) moving on line. That's where a good network comes in.

We are in a transitional phase ATM but the future is online provision.

And Sky are even a customer of VM's network provision.

ITV 'informal approach' to buy Channel 5.

Quote:

Richard Desmond is understood to have quietly made soundings about whether there is any appetite to potentially sell Channel 5 to rivals including ITV, just three years after he acquired it from pan-European broadcaster RTL.

ITV sources have confirmed that a very informal approach has been made through intermediaries, although it is notoriously difficult to divine Desmond's true intentions in testing the value of Channel 5 in the market. The approach is understood to have taken place several months ago.

The comment was made in the Guardian article that Den linked to, that VM doing the deal with Sky for VM to provide Sky with network capacity, could/would have included TV content from Sky in the deal. Hence the question as to whether Atlantic could have been included in those discussions and be part of the deal?

Virgin reported in Quarter 3 of 2012 that 831,000 have SKY Movies or SKY Sports. That was up from 776,000 in Quarter 3 of 2011, roughly 4583 new subscribers to SKY Sports and SKY Movies per month. At that rate Virgin must have about 860,000 customers currently with SKY Movies or SKY Sports which is almost 23% of all of their TV customers, and more TV customers than BT have in total! That would be a lot of disappointed customers.

Virgin managed when SKY basics left by investing the SKY basic money elsewhere. Within months of SKY basics leaving the platform, Virgin signed a deal for Setanta Sports to become free in the XL package. They also jointly launched Setanta Sports News. That helped steady the ship.

Nope, don't subscribe to them either. I had sports for about 6 months last year, but I simply could not justify the cost. #overrated #overpriced:)

Got the sports and movies on a half price for 3 months offer. Had to fight to get the movies though, as I wanted to downgrade to just SD sports and movies. Agent said I could have the sports and movies half price for 3 months. Turns out should never have been offered it, and only got sports on. Once I complained via Twitter, they looked into their records and agreed that as I had been offered the deal they would honour it. Will call me in May to discuss whether I want to keep the movies or not.

Absolutely as it seems relations between Sky and Virgin are indeed very entente cordiale and whatever poster or posters thought that Virgin would be frozen out by BT and Sky is probably choking on his porridge oats this morning because it very much seems that the odd man out could well be BT.

andy_m 25-04-2013 09:00

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

It's all posturing. Behind the scenes all the companies will be looking for mutually beneficial ways of working together. Virgin's network will now carry some of Sky's back traffic, and Sky have been reselling Bt's network for years. From a TV point of view I have long felt that it would be in Sky's interest to ensure Bt don't become even the second TV operator since from that position they are financially a much bigger threat than Virgin.

But that doesn't mean you should expect Atlantic anytime soon!

Exactly. BT are on the spot, because they have laid out £millions on sports rights which they HAVE to sell to Sky and Virgin customers - their own existing customer base by itself is way too small.

Sky (and to a lesser extent, Virgin) can probably afford to play hardball with BT on a wholesale deal - this probably why the Sky/Virgin deal is only for one year, to see how things pan out.

As a fall-back, BT could presumably use ESPN's EPG slots to market directly to satellite customers, but this too could be very difficult without Sky's co-operation and/or require setting up a whole new billing infrastructure with 3 months to go....

montehampster 25-04-2013 10:35

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

Interesting piece of hypocrisy in the Guardian article from Neil: -

"This spat that is going on between BT and TalkTalk at the moment is a bit disappointing," said Berkett. "Some of the language between Dido and Ian is not overly helpful. He believes BT should be free to set its own prices.
"You have to have a free market where an infrastructure supplier has the incentive to invest," said Berkett.

So why not a free market for a content supplier who has the incentive to invest? BT and Sky have invested heavily in content so they should also not be free to charge what they wish and we as customers of whichever platform have to decide whether we are prepared to pay that price?

There is.

However unrestricted competition for content rights is not necessarily best for the end consumer - it possibly just leads to greater profits for the rights owners (e.g. US TV studios, UK Premier League) and higher subscriptions for customers, and/or 'binary choices' between platforms to get all the content you want.

You don't want to end up having to have Sky, Youview and Tivo boxes all connected to your TV, not to mention the overlapping subscriptions that go with them, to get 'everything'.

It seems sensible from everybody's point of view for there to be arrangements whereby at least the most attractive content is wholesaled between suppliers at a reasonable cost. The 'content investors' reap the benefits of income from their indirect as well as direct customers, and the profile of the content itself is enhanced by its wider coverage.

Not really, it is pretty much just PSB channels & shopping at the moment. Obviously that's all ~50% of people want but that's a market unlikely to change.

Good read and great news for Virgin customers who enjoy SKY Sports.

Strange that there is no announcement on either the SKY or Virgin website / press offices. Also it seems the Guardian is the main source for this story. Is there anything official anywhere to clarify what has actually been agreed between both parties?

BT need to react quickly as they are certainly very much on the back foot now Chad.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

Now we wait to see if Virgin can sign a deal with BT to carry their sports channels. And if so, whether it will be part of the XL package or a premium standalone channel. Would be happy for it to be on XL, but wouldn't pay for a standalone channel. Don't watch that much football anyway so if that is all BT will show then not too fussed about the channel not coming. But I know several here are wanting it.

Which channel is most wanted, SKY Atlantic or BT sports channels?

denphone 25-04-2013 15:14

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

According to our CF unofficial poll unless its on the XL pack there won't be many takers at the reported £12 to £15 per monthly subscription they are likely to ask for Mark.

Hmm. Not easy to answer. As a football fanatic who watches every EPL game put in front of me, it would have to be BT Sports. BUT if the channel isn't included in XL I would downgrade my TV package (to M+?) to offset any additional subscription charges.

Last Year BT pay an other broadcaster on Sky for they channel slots.
But BT has to reuse them within 30days or lose the channel slots on Sky so BT launch The Sailing channels just to tie them over until BT Sports launch later this year.

I was thinking more along the lines of Netflix, where you pay a subscription and it's add free. As time goes on, more and more content will be available that way; hopefully the TV networks will eventually get on board. In the US, HULU plus is a step in the right direction, but I believe even that has a few adverts, even though it's around 8 dollars a month.

Don't get what Bale and Chamberlain add to BT's coverage. They might not be available on Saturday's if they're playing Sunday's and therefore also not available Sunday's.

Other than monotonous drones what will they say? They can hardly criticise other teams which would bite them on the backside when they play them.

It doesn't however those 2 channels might already be tied down on an exsisting carriage deal. It could be the case that it was only ever the carriage deal for SKY Sports 1 & 2 that was set to expire.

The problem is until something is confirmed, in black and white, people don't really know for sure.

On another matter I'm beginning to get a very sneaky feeling BT Sports might turn up in a package on Virgin. Maybe not XL, like ESPN currently is, but possibly 'free' for VIP customers.

IF VM put the price up just for BT Sports to say £10.00 per month, you can rule me out, as the football will be less than Sky.

BUT if they put the price up say £6.00 with BT Sports and other channels, then l might consider it. BUT its not worth it on its own.

I watch Sky sports quite a lot for the football, but IF BT are only going toi ashow less then its not worth it.

Both are unencrypted on the TV XL pack if that helps.

The CEO of Zee TV once said that Zee Cafe was only available on Sky as a bonus channel because:

-The carriage costs were cheaper on Sky than VM

and

-They make more money from Sky subscribers than they do from VM subscribers.

Something must have changed, perhaps VM have taken on board my suggestions to attract niche channels that could not normally afford to join the platform. Even if VM don't make much/any money from carriage fees, it strenghtens their offering and attracts new customers. They probably couldn't do this before when capacity was scarce.

I appreciate that 'the Holy Grail' has not appeared yet, but you have to admit VM are racking up the channel launches this year.

With the demise of Discovery Travel and Living on 30th, it would be nice to get the Travel Channel. We will have no access to regular travel programmes and this would fill a legitimate gap.

The amount of new channels added by Virgin, in just 4 months, is very impressive. I can't remember a time when so many new channels launched within such a short period, minus the Olympic channels last year of course.

I think it's a great strategy by Virgin. BT are set to launch their new TV service in the summer. The more HD and niche channels Virgin add, the bigger the gap becomes between what BT will offer and what you can get from Virgin.

Virgin have done well to add almost all popular HD channels. They've done well to add plenty of niche channels that customers had been demanding. If Virgin could add SKY Atlantic I think Virgin would have the best all round TV, broadband and phone package in the UK.
