That's correct, because 10 doubled is 20 - what made you think they were going to 30?

100mb will be available to all customers by the end of May, most exchanges already support 100mb, there a small number left which will be finished in may.

Once the speed doubling has been completed does that mean people will only be able to subscribe to XXL (what will be 100mb) or will 120mb be a separate tier again? This list seems to suggest these will be the available tiers after the upgrade and other wording suggests that current 100mb customers are getting 120mb as a bonus.

No.

No 100Mb customer is going to 120Mb before the summer. You'll not get the uplift until October at the earliest, they aren't going to upgrade 100Mb before they do everyone else and it's not only dependent on the same upgrades as the uplifts for the other tiers but also on upstream bonding.

Just to point out it says 'October onwards' and this programme is ongoing until the middle of 2013, so you may be waiting until the middle of next year, no completion date provided.

I would expect that there will only be one tier available to subscribe to after a certain date. When that is and what speed I don't know (but it would be odd if it wasn't the 120Mbit one)

To be honest, that's not what the site says:

If you have our up to 100Mb connection, you've already got the fastest widely available broadband in the UK. So we'll be taking a bit off your monthly bill, instead. And as an extra thank you, we'll be boosting your speeds up to 120Mb. Your upgrades start this summer. We'll be in touch to let you know.

'Summer' is earlier than 'October' ;)

Hi all, I'm on 50 meg, I was looking to upgrade to 100meg anyway, as they're not starting upgrades until October in my area (at the earliest) I think i'll take the plunge now. Am I right in thinking that there's a one off activation of £30, but I get a discount of the difference for 3 months, effectively cancelling this out? And when will the 100 meg prices be reduced to the 50 meg prices? Will it be a set date for everyone, or will it come into effect once your areas speed is upgraded? Tempted to go for it now and possibly pay for it for a few months, but then get the extra 20 meg in the summer.

Oh, and what do Virgin define as summer?!;)

Well, we are off to a good start! Just received this email which claims on already on 100M, but I'm definitely on the 50M service and have the modem to prove it and the bills too. So how do I get this corrected as I'll not get a free super hub (to be used on modem mode only) otherwise?

Good news - we're giving you even faster broadband, for less.

You're already getting the UK's fastest widely available broadband, and starting this summer we'll be starting the roll-out to boost your speeds from up to 100Mb to up to 120Mb. We'll also be lowering the price of your broadband package in April to match the price of our 50Mb Broadband XXL packages.

These are nice extras we do to make you smile. We call them Virgin Media tickles, and we only give them to people we know and like - our customers.

Our ongoing commitment to offering the UK's fastest broadband.

Virgin Media offers the fastest broadband speeds in the UK*, as proven by Ofcom for three years in a row. And we're committed to keeping it this way. Which is why we're upgrading our award winning fibre optic network over the next 18 months.

As part of this upgrade, you may have seen we'll be doubling many of our customers' broadband speeds. But, because you already get our fastest broadband, we're upgrading you to up to 120Mb and giving you a discount instead.

So whether you love streaming HD movies, ruling the gaming world or downloading tunes in super quick time - you'll soon be able to do it even faster and for less.

You don't have to lift a finger.

The 120Mb upgrade kick off in the summer and will have a slightly different roll-out schedule to our other work. We'll let you know nearer the time when to expect your broadband speed boost. In the meantime, see what you can do with faster speeds at virginmedia.com/evenfaster.

We'll be in touch in a few weeks with more details about your price reduction, so there's no need to call us, or do a thing – except keep enjoying what is already the UK's fastest broadband.

Wait a mo, I'm confused. So 50meg is going up to 100meg, and 100meg is going up to 120meg and dropping in price to be the same price as 50meg is now (which will be 100meg by then).

So, once the 120meg tier is available why wouldn't all the old 50meg customers, who will be on 100meg by then, switch to 120meg as it will cost the same price as their 100meg is costing?

I have a feeling that for the time being this is a bonus for those already on the top tier (100mb). Perhaps once the upgrades are complete everyone will move up to 120 who is on (the then) 100mb, therefore having 20mb, 60mb and 120mb as the three tier choices.

This is pure speculation on my part though. Maybe Ben has some answers

They have to swap kit right to move from 4 DS to 5 DS channels?

The checker actually says in progress for me which seems crazy as I still only have 4 DS. Its as if they think they have upgraded the DS but forgot.

It's confusing because what you've posted is completely wrong and makes no sense. These aren't loyalty tiers, these are the new tiers going forward. Once everyone has moved over, there won't be a 10, there won't be a 30meg and there won't be a 50meg.

You've also got the sizes wrong, 100meg (soon to be 120) is XXXL, 50 (to be 100) is XXL and XL is 30 (or 20 if you haven't paid the £30). L and M are both 10 and will be switched to 20.

It's not a tickle, don't get confused by the emails people were getting in December, this is a completely different thing. I have no idea why Virgin sent those emails if they were planning on rolling it out to everyone, but there you have it.

So.. Would anyone happen to know the current price for the (non direct debit version) 30Mb XL tier?

Am paying £21 (£27.50 including extra charges) for 10Mb L, but am thinking the significant upload increase (when upgraded) might be worth my returning to XL.

I actually started another thread with this, but it was closed, and I was directed here.

Anyway, I just received this e-mail from VM. It isn't doubling my speed as I'm on 100mb, but it is quicker:

Quote:

Kind regards,

Mark Davidson
Executive Director, Customer Care

*Fastest broadband download speeds widely available to consumers according to 2009 - 2011 Ofcom report.

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

Right, here's an update for everyone:

I thought to myself, if I upgrade from 50meg now to 100meg I'll get the price dropped down again in April to what I'm paying now. Then I'll get the 120meg service when it comes to my area for free. Simple no? So I called 150 and got through to Scotland.

Well, there are a few hitches. Firstly I have the 'Talk 08 2' package which was given out 'free for life' last year. Well, it turns out that if you upgrade it suddenly becomes chargeable so you have to drop it or accept an extra £2 per month fee. Sigh. I expected this would happen at some point as 'for life' usually means for the life of the offer rather than the life of the customer, still I would be prepared to drop it to ease the process.

Second hitch then kicked in, though the free upgrade to 100meg will not require an engineer visit, if you upgrade before the free offer kicks in an engineer visit is essential to 'check the wires'. I already have a Superhub so that's not the issue and my power levels and SNR are marvellous. The nice Scottish people tried, but there's no way around that one. So I've had to cry off until I can book time off work, which may be enough to put me off entirely so soon after Christmas.

Oh well, I tried. If anyone knows any way around these hitches then do tell, otherwise it looks like this approach may be a no go without mucho hastle.

Retentions!

Or wait a little bit. I get the feeling VM will be dropping the requirement for an engineer. There are already one or two posts from people saying they called to get upgraded to 100meg and it was done over the phone with no hassle today. It may be a new thing that hasnt filtered out through team briefings yet.

Isn't getting an enginner usually dependent on whether you are already on 50Mbit with a SuperHub or not?

I do have 50meg and a Shub already with excellent SNR and power levels.

It can't be about team briefings as the computer simply wouldn't allow them to get around booking a visit. They tried beating it for a long time before finally admitting defeat. Retentions may help, but I've never called them before because I don't really want to get in to arguing the toss until someone gives in. Life's too short.

If they drop the engineer requirement before the deadline to qualify for the free 120meg upgrade (whenever that is) then I'll try again. Otherwise it looks like this avenue is full of obstacles.

My life is strewn with cowpats from the devil's own satanic herd! :)~

Personally I can't see the engineer requirement for the top tier ever being dropped. It's a premium product and the flagship tier, so Virgin will want to make sure that it works as it should

Not quite. As I stated, they confirmed that there will be no engineer requirement for 100meg when the free double comes along, and 100meg will be the top tier at that point in time.

Mine says current speed is up to 10 or 20Mbit. Question is why don't they know exactly what my package is? My Virgin Media knows I'm on XL20 - why doesn't that page?

Most of you won't and for the people who do need some work doing it'll be free of charge. We'll be in touch ahead of when your speed is going to doubled to tell you if you need a engineer visit and arrange when is convenient with you

According to the link we are due the upgrade sometime from October.

We are currently on 30MB but I may upgrade to 50MB just before October to take advantage because 100MB for around £6.50 extra a month (the difference between 30MB and 50MB I believe), doesn't sound bad at all to me. ;)

Well, no, of course if you need a Shub or you have dodgy signal levels then fair enough. If there is a need for an engineer visit then of course there will be one. That is a far cry from having a hard requirement when there's no obvious need though, which is what we're talking about here.

Good, as I've got a second Shub on the shelf anyway from the 50meg install when their delivery system got screwed up.

I've got every angle covered really, yet an engineer visit still can't be avoided.

Kushan 13-01-2012 20:31

Re: Virgin Media to Double Broadband Speed

As someone said, I think the Engineer Visit is mainly because 100meg is the premium top-tier product. When the 50meg first came out, it was a similar thing - there was even a dedicated 50meg support number. The 100meg support number got you straight through to second line at one point when it was being trialled.

I was wondering about going to 50 meg now. I'm still on 20 because I didn't want the super hub, but as I'll end up with one anyway for the speed doubling, and the bad reports seem to have gone away...

The other attraction is backup and storage, which it says is unlimited; is it really unlimited?

Oh where to begin. (WARNING: Bias incoming).

It has a terrible interface
It's slow
It has an interface designed by blind monkies with some sort of motor-neuron disease
It only kind of works
The interface could do with some work
There is absolutely no support for it because nobody's been given any training on how to use it that goes beyond "This product exists" and "it's on the website"
The interface makes you want to gouge your eyes out

But most of all, beyond all the points listed above, the biggest issue it has is the confusing, slow and utterly useless interface.

Of course, I haven't used it for a while so YMMV.
