I would guess that Virgin will be using either WD Green Cavier or consumer Seagate drives in the PVR's, both resonable drives and fully capable.

The "PVR" drives you talk of are more than likely enterprise drives which whilst they are good, most businesses we deal with would not see it as cost effective to use them. It would terefore make no sense for Virgin to be using them.

Aside from that I'm very excited about the Tivo box, I just hope Virgin get it right, Tivo and 100mbit internet would be an ideal christmas present.....

I suggest you do some bench tests then. a hard disk running at 90%+ capicty even goign into 100%+ capictuy for 2 years the platters will be damged. if you use thing to cool the hard disk you keep it goign longer.

oh.... and the 3 year warrent it says operating at a certain tempurate and only operational % of the day.

edit: i aitn discussing this again this is way off topic if you want to discuss pm me

but the drives are different and if you tkae it back to when they where out the PVR drive was dearer same now but not by much as the above user pointed out but we dnt knwo the hard disk geting used

Andrew, although I'm a bit out of touch with current hardware specifications, having no SATA drives in the house yet, my opinion would be that, as drive capacity and speed has improved, so has resilience. I concede that, for PVR use, the drives are expected to run hot as there is usually no cooling fan in the box but the drives are designed for that.

Personally, an MTBF of anything less than 5 years would be unacceptable to me but perhaps I have exceptionally high standards.

As legislation stands at the moment any bid by Sky for Virgin media would be thrown out by the monopolies and merger commission.
News Corps bid for the 60% of Sky they don't own, has already got the EU and the UK government investigating as they own The Times,Sunday Times and the Sun newspapers.

Perhaps into the future, such a plan will be reinstated but at this time, when RTÉ needs to focus on developing its digital television strategy, it is investing all of its resources into that development, which must be completed by 2012, when the analogue system will be switched off. RTE Player is not too bad. Watched some recent boxing broadcasts on it. RTE on demand, is that something Virgin would ever consider or is there a lack of demand for Irish broadcasting in the UK?

Andrew, the response from RTÉ was "that plan was over-ruled in favour of an international online player service" which implies that they allow access to at least some programming on-line anywhere in the world so it would surely not be an issue for Virgin Media to carry the same service using the cable TV system.

Do you know nothing? The GAA do not approve of armchair sportsmen. You either play the game in the spilling rain or you support it standing up in the rain. It's only stringent health and safety regulations that forced them to introduce headgear for players and seating at Croke Park. They still managed to keep Hill 16 as terraces, as it is considered a national monument, but for soccer games it is either closed off or temporary seating is fitted to appease UEFA.

It depends if RTE have the rights to broadcast (through a TV service as apposed to their online player) in Ireland or the entire UK as that may cross deals with other broadcasters like Sky if its only in Ireland.

Firstly, I thought that we had agreed on here a long time ago that saying a channel, its content or its viewer base were 'crap' was imposing one's own extreme opinion on others and belittling theirs. Sky Arts is there to fill a viewer requirement but you don't have to watch it. Of course, if you meant that the picture or sound quality on Sky Arts is sub-standard rather than the content, then you should have made that clear.

Secondly, I rather enjoyed Sky Arts - Suggs' Italian Job where, in six episodes, he travelled around Italy in a mini showing us a bit of culture and a bit of fun in his own inimitable way. He went to a factory where they made musical instruments from alabaster and then played “One step beyond” with an alabaster band! I think it's the only thing I've watched on Sky Arts so far.

We could all do with a bit of culture in our diet. I'm not a big classical music fan (and even less so of fine art) but the New Year concert from Vienna can be good for a laugh if you get a fun conductor. And, you never know, you might even discover a latent love of Liszt!

They are RUMOURED to be coming by end of year (That how they are on my list) but none of my insiders can confirm that they will launch.

Agreed, maybe he's a Phillip Stein.;)

Yeah, him and Phyllis Stein, they're so uncultured. Ignant, even!

Why would they do that? Doesn't make sense. What if there are any programme changes?

As in they stop adding/removing channels, they'll still update the program information.

It's to stop there being issues over the christmas period where things generally take a lot longer to sort out.

Great to see Demand Five now on Virgin Media!

The Five DOG is off screen a bit though. It's set too far in the corner.

I asked this question a couple of pages ago and according to Media Boy there will be no new HD channels until the new year

If Cindy Rose says 30 by the end of the year in an interview then I would say there's another to come before Christmas.

mersey70 11-11-2010 20:54

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV

Maybe Cindy Rose means they will finally get round to providing their own customers with Eden HD and Good Food HD before the end of the year instead of only providing them to Sky customers.

You couldn't make it up.

Does anyone know the actual date the interview was conducted? Was it last month, last week, yesterday? It could be at the time of the interview a deal for another HD channel was almost concluded, but has since fell through.

I think Virgin have done a cracking job delivering HD channels this year. I'm sure we'll see even more throughout 2011. The ITV channels appear to be on the way along with further SKY basic channels. Once we have these there aren't really too many HD channels left, well ones I'd actually ever watch.

I forgive you Cindy:blush:

Not really.
You just need to learn how to read news articles like this, anything that's not in a quote hasn't came from the person being interviewed. It was said ages ago that they were aiming for 30 HD channels by the end of the year, so they just put that into the article as filler. She hasn't personally given any figure on the number of channels there'll be, if she had it would have been in a quote.

Very harsh, they try to get the best deal so that we don't have to pay extra for the new channels except Sky Movies and Sport HD where the only way to get them was to surcharge customers who wanted them

£7 extra is too much for me to subscribe to them

Yes, how dare they make us wait for more HD channels! They've only gone from 1 to 29 the last year!:rolleyes:

Virgin have done a great job over the last year. I think most peoples unhappiness still stems from the 1 HD channel in the previous three and a half years, and how far we still are behind Sky.

devilincarnate 12-11-2010 15:57

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV

So they have gone from 1 to 29 channels in lets say a year?

365 days / 28 = 13.036 days

So would say that they have done well in regards to adding the hd channels.

Hiroki 12-11-2010 17:20

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010) Vol. IV

In the end though Virgin are always going to be behind Sky because Sky are always going to add HD channels (even if they are pointless) to make themselves more desirable, so if your keep getting yourself worked up about that you will never be happy :dozey:

ITV2 HD and 3 and 4 look more likely now http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginm...nteractive.php

FA Cup interactive

What time’s it on?
The Interactive service launches Saturday 23rd Jan at 7.18pm

It’s accessible from the ITV Interactive Service Menu via the red button 103/114/116/117 and then select FA Cup extra from the menu

Possibly the ITV channels are moving to make way for more HD content
