Try 14mbps.
Sky1 only gets 12mbps, and the sky movie channels use between 8-12mbps.

Sky skimp on bandwidth more than VM do.

their response:

"There's no information I can give you at the moment but we appreciate the feedback :) ST"

I'm not sure what ST means? maybe sincere thanks??

Early Blu Ray discs (like Mission Impossible 2) used MPEG 2 to deliver a great picture. If you throw enough bandwidth at it, MPEG 2 can do a job.

Given the great analogue switch-off (which will free up loads of bandwidth anyway), I don't think VM are in that much of a rush to use MPEG 2.

Does anyone know if this new box supports Infra-red, as opposed to IRDA for its remote?

I'm interested in HD, but not the V+ box as it must work with a stand-alone TiVo box.

My Pace 4000 is almost 10 years old...

It uses the same remote control, so it will be IRDA.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

I think that's wrong. All the new boxes from Virgin i.e Samsungs, V+ and the newer Pace boxes use standard remote signals - it's why you can use Universal Remotes with them

It's the older Pace boxes and the standard Scientfic Atlanta boxes that use the incompatible IRDA signals

I expect the TiVo box (along with the V HD box) will continue to use standard remote codes

zantarous 14-02-2010 00:28

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

Yep only one of the old Pace boxes used IRDA all the rest use IR. I have used universal remotes and IR blasters with all my Virgin kit.

That makes sense, thanks. Look forward to giving it a try, unless Virgin's TiVo box comes out first :)

I stand corrected :D

I know the TV keyboard Telewest used to use was not compatible with (TVDrive) V+ and Samsung boxes, so that makes sense. :)

I realise this may sound like a simple question... but why is everybody so eager for the card switch over? Is it just because it will hinder those people who are using dodgy boxes (and I totaly agree with anything that will affect that)? Or are there other benefits that I dont know of?

For me yes, there's one across the road who keeps rubbing it in everyones faces (& VM never seemed to care). However he's not in the know so I'm planning to tell him when it'll have maximum impact.:D

Hi all! I'm still catching up on all of the postings from Jan/Feb so I hope there's some exciting stuff to read. I've already seen news of new HD channels due between April and July and speculation of extra SD channels. I really must get a V+ HD box, oh, and a HD TV!

I received my new NagraVision smart card on Feb 5th and it was up and running in under two minutes (much better than the suggested 20 minutes). Anyone know how many areas have yet to receive the new cards?

Also, my box is now running Application Version 14.120.4/20091201r0 which is very recent but I don't know what advantages it gives.

Showing 316 Total Channels and 33 TS Streams.

I am getting a lot of 293 and 294 events "DMX Reset (EMM) ..." although they do not appear to affect the performance of the box. Anyone know about these messages?

Glad to see that FX is broadcasting in 16:9 widescreen at last although I'm not watching much on there at the moment.

I'm in two minds about this.

On one hand i find it utterly ludicrous that VM would WANT to sell it's stations to Sky given thay, in the future, it could have trouble securing a reasonable price to broadcast them (i.e the Sky 1 debacle).

It also means VM giving up any "card hand" in negotations with Sky (i.e Living HD and BTW will this mean VM no longer able to broadcast Living HD if it becomes owned by Sky???)

BUT i GUESS it could mean we are closer to having Sky HD channels on VM.

I hop ethat VM have made sure in any sales contract that the channels they sell to Sky can NEVER NOT be shown on the VM platform.

I find it hard to imagine they would sell to sky without safeguards against being screwed by sky in future negotiations. I also find to equally hard to imagine for such a deal not to be tied in with more sky channels coming to virgin.
After all these months of hardball by virgin they surely wont simply say to sky "okay we will sell the channels to you and of course we will trust to you to be fair in future negotiations".
It would be madness.
But then again never say never!

I wondered at the time that LivingHD was launched if it was partly a tactical move by VM to force sky to open up the other sky HD services in the event that they bought VMs channels.

I could be reading too much into it though!

I would imagine that the results would form the basis for some extra bargaining depending on what the results are.
If virgin know they are bad they will want to get a good deal before the results and if they are good then sky would want to get the deal done before as well.

All speculation but at least there are events to speculate about for once!

IF any sale goes through, i will be looking for VM to immediatley give VM viewers the assurance that the whole carriage issue has been looked at and resolved beyond doubt.

No, it's just the broadcasting arm of VM... VM will continue as normal, just as a platform not a content provider - IF the sale goes through.

BTW Sky wouldn't be allowed to merge with VM as there would be virtually no competition for Sky.

It's no good VM carrying on as a platform without access to viable content.

But as we've all said, that should have been secured in any deal worth the paper and there's always Ofcom.

Just Seen This:-

Virgin has undertaken a series of refinancing deals that have reduced net debt and postponed the maturity dates of loans towards the end of the decade. Because of that, said Mr Berkett, there was "no compelling need" to sell assets such as Virgin Media's pay-TV channels, which include Living and Bravo.

Heres the source

Just a negiotating stance to let sky know they arent getting it on the cheap.
I still think the sell off, if it goes to sky, will just be part of the deal.
If i was in virgins shoes id want cast iron guarantees of hd channels and sd channels at a sensible price. An arrangement between them a bit like the card rate system. Whether that would get through regulators is another thing.

It's not now i'm concerned about... it's 5, 10 years down the line when contracts run out and need to be re-negotiated - what would VM have left to bargain with?

Who REALLY thought we'd lose Sky 1 for those 12 months or so.

I thought it was just posturing from both sides... it wasn't!

I'm presuming though, Ben, that there are seperate negotiations for seperate commodities.

Sky Movies and Sports

Sky Movies and Sports HD

Sky Basics

Sky Basics HD

And then channels like Bravo, V1 and Living????

Thats sai it was perfectly plain that Sky lost revenue from not allowing Sky 1 on VM and their shareholders and advertisers were in no way happy. This must have been partly a catalyst for Sky re-appearing on VM.

The same would be the case for Living etc.

BenMcr 15-02-2010 15:45

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

Sky Sports and Movies are regulated so no negotiation is needed

The Virgin channels on Sky are up for negotiation as the same time as the Sky channel on Virgin

Virgin channels on Virgin probably have no negotiated agreement as they are the same company. the UKTV channels on Virgin again are probably a given

VH1 Classic to become MTV Classic next month.

The UK and Ireland is one of the first parts in the world to see VH1 Classic being rebranded as MTV Classic from the 1st of March.

Here's the show description for 'Morning Glory':

"Give your day a great start with Morning Glory on MTV Classic. An unmistakable mix of great tracks and ledgendary artists."

Info Thanks to Digital Spy Forums.

Update: I have seen info that MTV Classic is set to launch down under in May.

And the sd channels that are coming are to replace them lol.Still think its a bad move by virgin to sell to them.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

I totally agree that this may not be the best of moves by Virgin, however the act of selling the channels will give Virgin a much needed cash injection and Sky are likely to be highest bidders.

The real problem in my eyes isn't the short term implications but more of the long term. Everyone knows that Sky are out to screw everyone to boost their own sales and whilst this may be beneficial to Sky it will in time put VM in a very difficult position.

The real problem is that Sky have too much power over everything. If Sky was simply a distributer of content like Virgin, BT etc. then everything would be a level playing field - unfortunately Sky own a lot of important channels and use all of this power to their advantage. Whilst I have great admiration for what Sky has accomplished it cannot be fair to the competition if one company has complete control.

I just hope that VM's legal team go through everything with a fine toothed comb:confused:

Out off the 3 i would say the unexplained channel (paranormal channel) as the best one.

Haha wow that channel is so bad it makes FX and Living seem good :D

For me it would be clubland and even though I hate that chavvy crap it's still the best out of a bad bunch.

Maybe CBS Drama? I wouldn't mind watching some of the old series that are shown on there, John wouldn't be quite so happy having to sit and watch them again though. :D

I just hope they are not more +1's, although they can come in useful I would rather have proper new channels.

it would be good if there was a wiki page with a table of channels on virgin and sky so we can compare which channels aren't on both.

Teachers get paid on pro rata basis through-out the year, they don't all of a sudden get no wages over the 6 weeks of summer holidays, no?

I wasn't having a swipe at teachers getting paid holidays. Some of my best friends are teachers :)

I was referring to the fact that our taxes are obviously providing children with such an excellent grasp of English. You will probably have to read skyisdabest's other posts to see what I mean. I suppose these days they spend more time texting on their phones than writing in exercise books though.

Sorry I have taken the thread off-topic. :erm:

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2010)

Don't forget we still have Eden+1 and yesterday+1 to come back to us yet, if itv2+1, itv3+1 and itv4+1 returns then Vm have signed a deal with itv and itvhd should be well on its way!
It's a shame that Vm haven't pursued a new contract with the CSC channels, there is a big bunch of half decent channels that could be added there like:

true movies 2
true entertainment
pop girl
pop girl+1
tiny pop+1
pop+1
flaunt
scuzz etc

Got to admit, having freesat does give me these channels anyway, but the channels I mentioned are probably some of the best channels on freesat that could come to cable. Other half decent ones are Travel Channel, movies4men is okayish some of the time, oh and Kix is quite a good kids channel, and quite geekish is the Renault channel which is quite niche!

May aswell go off topic just once more. As a supply teacher I go 6 weeks without pay during the holidays. In any case though, apostrophes should only be used for possession (as in Tom's dog) and contractions (don't instead of do not). They should not be used as plurals, the s on its own will surfice.

Hey would love to see any channels coming really. As long as it makes my extra £1.50 worth it. ;)
