At the moment, I have two concerns regarding updating early using the leaked 3.0 GM file:

1) Installing software obtained from an untrusted source. The file itself has no digital signature, and obviously there's no MD5 hash officially available to check against the downloaded file's MD5 hash (the only MD5 hash I've seen has been posted by people who've downloaded the leak).

2) I've seen mention of the following warning regarding the 3.0 GM:

"By installing iPhone OS 3.0 GM Seed software on your Authorized Test Devices, these Devices are permanently “locked” into test mode and cannot be restored to an earlier release of iPhone OS. Bear this in mind before installing the software."

Not being able to restore to an earlier release... big deal, who would want to downgrade anyway?

But what's all this about being "permanently locked into test mode"? I thought that the leaked version was *the* final version which is going to be officially available on Wednesday, no dev account needed, etc.?

I think I'd be tempted to wait for the official release :erm:

re: The iPhone thread

I think that's what I'll do myself.

It is very tempting to upgrade early... but I think it's safer to just wait until Wednesday. It's only a few days, it's not like we have to wait weeks or months.

Stephen 13-06-2009 22:05

re: The iPhone thread

The 3.0GM release is the same file that will be available on Wednesday. There is no test mode or anything.

Stuart 14-06-2009 14:21

re: The iPhone thread

I personally wouldn't risk my warranty. Not when there this only a few days to wait for the legit download.

Stephen 14-06-2009 14:51

re: The iPhone thread

My 3.0 download is legit, my mate is in the dev program so I got it from him.

Stuart 14-06-2009 15:49

re: The iPhone thread

I'm not saying it isn't the proper download. It's just I have seen links to downloads which may or may not be legit.

Got on the download quite early so I hope that i have a legit one.

I'm also an Apple Dev so I should be ok ;-). Granted I'm not a fully paid up one yet but I will be soon enough.

If it all goes wrong then you can always use flash it back to 2.xx.

It took about 30 mins in total but I have not synced my tunes over yet as I wanted to play with the software straight away.

Stephen 14-06-2009 16:29

re: The iPhone thread

I think all the links out there are for the same legit software version though as there isn't actually any developer locks or security on the upgrade, as its just the final 3.0 release that will be available to download on Wednesday.

That is good news, I might have to upgrade if they are going to pay off the rest of my contract as well, I can't see any link to that but if they're going to buy my Iphone 3G 8 gig surely they'll have to buy out the contract  or is that price just for the handset ?

Iphone 3.0 software with mms etc available on the 17th

Possible that Apple are blocking mms for ( non legit ) software, even though it's meant to be the same release it could be that it's not registered for the handset

Have a gander at the screenshots above (from my iphone) ;)

Upgraded to the dev GM 3.0 software the other day and have tried a couple of times to send a mms but it kept failing. (it stores the message in the conversation flow now and you can then go in and resend which is much better than before. Tried it today though and it went through. Then an hour later i got the 2 messeges through. First one saying it will be set up then the other with a test mms.

So all working fine now and a day early.

It worked then I got the messages through. I think that they might have noticed mms coming from an iphone account and the messages are o2's way of letting me know that the charging part is set-up now.

Can't believe your waiting, you can always restore back to 2.2 then get the official upgrade.

I've been sending and recieving MMS messages since I installed 3.0 last wednesday evening.

Someone could get more selling their iPhone 3G to e.g. Mazuma mobile -

£180 for an 8GB iPhone 3G

£200 for a 16GB iPhone 3G

Mobile recycling comparison tool:

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/pho...recycling#tool

On eBay or somewhere, it may fetch even more.

Well IIRC the sim is tied to the phone or vise versa so the sim wouldn't be much use, I'm assuming I'm wrong then ?

Tezcatlipoca 16-06-2009 22:08

re: The iPhone thread

I don't think they're actually tied together, it's simply that the iPhone requires an O2 SIM.

e.g Someone could sell their 3G, keep their SIM, then buy a PAYG 3GS and put their original SIM in that. The person who bought the 3G could then put their own contract or PAYG SIM in it, so long as it was an O2 SIM.

I can't see any reason why CPW/O2 would pay off the rest of someone's contract - the 3G was subsidised, and the 3GS is subsidised. Paying off someone's contract, or letting them off early, means losing money.

A little heads-up for our non-O2 iPhone bearing members.

It appears that the iPhone Dev team have cracked 3.0 and it works on any iPhone (including 3GS) and baseband. I'm waiting for confirmation from them, but seems to be the case pieceing together statements.

The unlock, ultrasn0w, should be available Friday. If you just need to jailbreak, it will be available straight after Apple start pushing the update.

Remember ONLY trust the iPhone Dev team's official site (quickpwn.com etc AREN'T anything to do with iPhone Dev Team). They have a twitter account for updates: @MuscleNerd and he is answering questions too :noworthy:

Apparently Apple have changed the dates on SOME international sites to the 18th to reflect that the update will be released on 17th June in the US.. Of course, when it's the 17th in the US, it will be the 18th in other countries.

Text message / mms sending adds a nice retry function that was missing. Seems faster sending.
Share contacts easier (like vcard)
Recent call page updated icons
search box at the top of email / calls
Spotlight search left off the home screen
it's now a hold / double tap to screenshot because of the hold to voice on the 3gs
Stocks gets landscape view plus you can touch to view exact price and double hold to view ranges
voice memos is pretty cool
Landscape text and email
a2dp (stereo bluetooth)
forward / delete single messages
auto fill on forms (no logging into cf each time)

... and the Activation server and more...

The download, verification, and update went quickly & smoothly for my iPhone 3G.

After the phone restarted post-update however, things slowed right down.

Activation took a fair while, as the server died, so all my phone was capable of was emergency calls.

After the activation finally went through, it then took even longer for the iPhone to actually sync, as iTunes "could not contact the server".

Eventually though it worked :)

Mrs D updated hers less than an hour ago, and everything went smoothly from start to finish.

MMS doesn't seem to work properly yet for me though - I can send but not receive.

Anyone know if OS3.0 has improved the camera in any way on the iPhone 3G? I'm sure I read somewhere that it was meant to improve the image processing or something. Obviously nothing as drastic as upping the hardware to 3MP with AF like the 3G S, but I was sure I had read that there would at least be some sort of software improvement.

Well... My orignal iPhone has a total of a handful of improvements

Main ones are copy/paste, landscape keyboard, voice memos, call icons, spotlight search. Thats about it.

How do you screenshot your iphone... I managed to do it accidently once but i've tried the double tap or tap-hold and neither seems to work?

I can't believe that original iPhones are not capable of MMS - as it runs through GPRS/Edge and not a 3G connection! Its really not nice of apple to limit the hardware like this when its completely capable of such things as MMS and A2DP Bluetooth!

That does rather extract the urine.

As you say, MMS does not need 3G - GPRS is fine for it, so why can't the original iPhone do MMS...

Apple trying to make more of a distinction between them, to help tempt any remaining original iPhone owners to upgrade?

I hate Gadget Lust...I am so tempted by the 3G S :(

But I'd need to sell my 3G, then make up the (most likely vast) difference for a PAYG 3G S & swap SIMs.

Really want a 32GB for some reason too... even though I've only filled just over half the space on my 16GB 3G...

Stephen Fry has reviewed the iPhone 3G S and loves it:

He also comments on the N97... not impressed.

Its Apple trying to bite the hand that feeds, like normal.

SwirlyMMS sends and receives genuine MMSes properly. None of this paying-for-credit or routing it through a website. Its a proper MMS sent from the phone. That shows that it can be done. However, its for jailbroken phones only and costs $8 on the Cydia marketplace.

That does annoy me a bit.

Won't most iPod speaker docks do it ok? Any that have the iPhone cerification should work... Some have line out jacks to plug into the line-in of a huge stereo

Does seem rather unfair.

Regarding Jailbreaking:

The Jailbreak tool for OS3.0 has been released, works on iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPod Touch. Will also carrier unlock the original iPhone. Carrier unlocking for the 3G is on the way.

Has anyone at CF with a 3G upgraded to the 3G S, or is planning to do so?

As I said earlier, I'm getting more & more tempted. I may sell my 3G via Mazuma or something, & then get a 16GB 3G S on PAYG & put my contract SIM in it. 32GB would be nice, simply 'cos it's the largest available, but realistically 16GB is more than enough for me.

If you replace one iPhone with another, is it just a case of swapping the SIM, & then activating the new one via iTunes? Does iTunes restore the old phone's backup onto the new phone?

Still not 100% sure yet though.

Stephen 21-06-2009 21:07

re: The iPhone thread

Yes the new Phone would restore your 3G back up, and you would also just put in your existing sim. Don't think it would need activated as your sim is already in service.

I had my 3G replaced last month for a new one and after restoring my back up I don't remember having to activate it again.

Carphone warehouse would give you £170 for the 8GB 3G and £180 or the 16GB 3G. They do trade in on their site now.

Also play.com have an unlocked 32GB 3G s for pre order......its only £999.99!!!!!!

CPW's trade-in isn't very competitive.

Mazuma & a few others will give £200 for a 16GB 3G, and Mobile Phone Buyer will give £211.

Mazuma: https when registering. Money comes via a cheque.

Mobile Phone Buyer: no https when registering, money comes via BACS to your bank account (but: details of which are entered into an unsecure page).

Mazuma for me.

I would do what your are Matt if it were not for the fact that I would need the 32gig which is a wooping £500. Might as well wait until next iPhone when hopefully the upgrade will be more drastic.

I want 32GB... but only 'cos it's the biggest.

But I need no more than 16GB.

I've only actually filled about half of my 16GB 3G. Although I still haven't got around to ripping all of my CDs, I'd probably not top 10GBish, so still have room for more music or some videos.

I downloaded the Entire season of Brass Eye, along with my music collection it pretty much wipes out the 16gig :P

Well, as expected, I gave in...

I picked up a PAYG 16GB iPhone 3GS from the Apple Store on Friday evening after work.

Got there at about 5:50pm, 10 minutes before closing.

Got served a few minutes before six. The assistant ("A-Train") was very helpful, & I was out of there around 6:10pm.

I had to do a £10 Top Up online on the PAYG SIM & Activate the iPhone in store, even though I said I was planning on simply putting my Pay Monthly SIM in it & not actually using it as a PAYG. Apparently this is standard practice & the same happens if you buy a PAYG one in the O2 store too. He told me though that all I had to do was phone O2, & they could credit it back to my contract bill - I did that on Saturday, & a very helpful O2 iPhone CSR called Patrick sorted that out for me.

Swapped SIMs at home on Friday, hooked the 3GS up to iTunes & then restored the 3G backup to my 3GS & sync'd it. And then my new 3GS was up & running :)

Not had a full play with it yet, but it's definitely a lot faster than the 3G. Even just web-browsing with Safari is noticeably faster.

The compass works well, & the way Google Maps orientates accordingly is good.

I tried the Voice Control, but didn't have much luck. Seemed a bit hit & miss (something I also found when using voice control on my old old XDA Mini S running WM5). It's just a novelty for me though anyway.

Me: "Play Portishead."

iPhone: "Playing The Verve."

Me: "No, PLAY PORTISHEAD."

iPhone: "Call Richard?"

Tried a few other things. Some worked, some were way off...

Sounds like you had great luck there, Matt. A 3GS with a good taste in music!

Can I ask what tariff you're on Matt?

I think I remember seeing you can buy an iPhone bolt on for £10/month. Can you just add that to a £10/month simplicity deal?

Re. the "Find my iPhone"... Pity though that you have to subscribe to MobileMe.

I get free OTA sync'ing of my Contacts & Calendar with Google Sync, & free email with Google Mail (IMAP at the moment for the iPhone but hopefully they'll do Push soon), and I have no need of the online storage or gallery stuff, not for £59 per year. "Find My iPhone" could obviously be useful, but it's not something I'd pay that much for.

I'm on the O2 45 Pay Monthly iPhone tariff, although once it's been 9 months I'll be downgrading to O2 35. I only went for the O2 45 'cos it knocked another £100 off the cost of the phone.

I don't think they do iPhone bolt-ons. For an actual iPhone tariff, you need one of the iPhone Pay Monthly tariffs or the iPhone Pay & Go. The Pay Monthly tariffs come with Unlimited Web & WiFi. Pay & Go comes with 12 months free Unlimited Web & WiFi (after 12 months it costs £10/month if you want to keep the bolt-on). I think it's only Pay Monthly that comes with Visual Voicemail.

The texts & minutes on the iPhone tariffs are of course not very generous when compared to a normal tariff, or to something like Simplicity...

For Simplicity, what looks like a good deal is to go for the £20/month option, as that comes with a free inclusive bolt-on... so for the iPhone an obvious bolt-on to choose would be Unlimited Web.
