Again the difference is that before Roman, Chelsea were already a pretty good team, so spending £20m+ on players is always going to make a significant improvement - Newcastle were a mid-table table team and didn't spend anywhere near what the Russian splashed out on.

We must have been watching different matches, we didn't let them get any decent chances on goal, only long shots from outside the area which were no trouble, apart from two or three very poor mistakes from VDS they never really looked like scoring, whereas Rooney missed a howler in the second half for us. Re: Football : Season 2007/2008
Celtic v Barcelona: Celtic are great at home but rubbish away so they need to be 2-0 to go to Spain to have any chance of getting through alough they have had a few decent results in the group stages and have a bit of a rep for playing in the big games
Lyon v Manchester United: Man U to get through cant see Lyon being too much of an issue for them to be honest Liverpool v Inter Milan Tough draw for Liverpool I think they are maybe in the same boat as Celtic. If they have lead going into the away leg they should be ok Arsenal v AC Milan This is a good match up and very close to call as well anyones game Olympiakos v Chelsea Would expect Chelsea to win away leg 1-0 then finish the job at home ---------- Post added at 11:47 ---------- Previous post was at 11:46 ---------- Quote:

Re: Football : Season 2007/2008
I have just sat and watched Aston Villa play Spurs, and although it was an enjoyable game, the decisions by the referee was again under question, and the biase commentator of Andy Gray, it was only half way through the match when it was announced that the referee 'Tanner' was an inexpereienced referee, with ONLY 16 Prem GAMES under his belt, yet you have a fully experienced ref. Rennie, as a fourth official, l appreciate that ref's have to learn, but to me they should run the line, of prem games for at least TWO years, before they tackle, such highly motivated games, and Andy Gray was never a Manager, so why should he comment on games.:)
|
Re: Football : Season 2007/2008
Uriah Rennie, your havin a larf, one of the most incompetent officials currently on the list, just check how many Premiership games he has actually been given this season and check on the comments on his performance in that game.
Now we might not always agree with Andy Gray, Alan Green, Alan Hansen etc, but they have as much right as you, I or anyone else to an opinion, its called free speech.;) Jim. |

Re: Football : Season 2007/2008
Its a bit of everything.
Mal is right that away supporters are the most hardcore, and therefore most vocal. Also Andy is right that rising prices bring in a different kind of supporter. However, its not quiet everywhere else, as I have been to Spurs several times this season and even with our crap season, still easily outsing the away supporters, and generally giving vigourous support (unless we are an anomaly). Or maybe our lack of success is motivating supporters. SDUK is also correct with his link. I don't think its so much as the stewards are Nazis but the FA regulations are screwing the hell out of supporters. During the matches at WHL we are constantly threatened by the FA of playing our matches in a closed stadium. However we all stand up anyway until a steward comes along and shouts at us. We sit down for a moment, stand up again, and the process continues. I haven't heard of anyone being eject or losing their season tickets over it. That is Nazi-esque, (although I can imagine its not very much fun for kids). Plus it will be hard to eject most of the stand as well. Also the chants have changed a lot and become a lot more family-friendly. I don't think we've even called Wenger a paedophile this season. There was never much in the way of racism* but a lot of the character and colour has been lost I think, because people are afraid of the repercussions. That said we are still vocal with the generic, family-friendly chants, so it all comes around. * Spurs fans aren't even allowed to call ourselves yids anymore. |
Re: Football : Season 2007/2008
The thing with the stewards at United has been happening since OT went all-seater. The club were always blaming Trafford Council for "making" the fans sit down.
There have been a number of games on TV this season, where I have heard the away fans out-sing the home fans. |
Re: Football : Season 2007/2008
Hi Gavin, I'm a yid, and have been for 30 years, and l am proud of the fact, l used to go to every game, until l got married, the proudest moment as a yid, was we played Hearts in Edinburgh, and there was just 30 of us travelled North for a friendly, and when Spurs scored, we did the usual, and we got a standing ovation, that we had travelled up there, and the friendship we received, l will never forget, it was brilliant, since then at WHL, there has been some silly rules brought out, but my main complaint about the Lane, is that the seats are too damn small - up the yids.:):) oh by the way, l still go the the Lane, and now l take my two sons, who l am proud of, and in two months, l will enjoy taking my grandson to WHL.

I think that whilst we all want to see English clubs in Europe, the ease of which clubs can qualify via the premiership does undermine the FA Cup. I'd rather see only the top 4 qualify for champions leaque (top 2) and UEFA and the rest coming from cup competitions. I think teams like Liverpool give up to easy in the league knowing that 4th will be enough for an attempt at champions league. |
