Nah, we're currently on the 750k service, so it'd be the 2mb one.

You need the STB upgrade then as if I recall the Pace STBs can only handle up to 1Mb. That's why your mum got told she will have to wait till April as that's when they are swapping the boxes out :)

JohnHorb 13-03-2005 21:03

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

Still need to replace. Anything over 1MB and NTL will give you a nice new Samsung. A bit of grovelling to CS might give you a temporary 1MB until they get round to the replacement though.

"The uploads are all being increased.
The 750k down / 128k up service is now 2mb down / 200k up
The 1.5mb down / 256k up service is now 3mb down / 300k up."

So why am i still uploading at the same speed as before?? I'm on 2mb, but the tests i've run all show same upload??

new upgrades :s

i am confuesd about these upgrades .......do i get the free upgrade from 750 to 2mg and still pay the 750 price? or is it just the upgrade to the 2mg that is free and then i pay the 2mg price :s i am slightly confused as u can tell, hence y mayb this post doesn't make all that sense lol

Are you saying the auto upgrades are not planned around here as yet?

So can stay on 750k it will not be automatic upgrade

Paul K 14-03-2005 09:06

Re: new upgrades :s

No you pay the price you are paying now and unless you are on a STB it's automatic. If you are on a Pace STB you need to ring NTL CS up for a date to have your box swapped for a nice shiny samsung box as the Pace STB cannot handle the upgraded speed past 1Mb.

WingDings 14-03-2005 09:07

Re: new upgrades :s

i am on a stand alone modem, ok thanks for that, i was thinkign that i was goign to have to pay the 2mg price :s lol but if not then yay!

Paul K 14-03-2005 09:10

Re: new upgrades :s

Nope the speed upgrade is free so you continue to pay the same monthly price as you do now. If you ring the number that "Marge" gave you on the options thread you need to press the option for package changes etc and that should put you through to the people that can help with your account. Think it's option 2 but the thread the info is in is now 3500+ posts long ;) Oh and while you are on the line to them you could always ask if your upgrade can be put through while you wait. They might do it there and then if your area is ready for the upgrades.
Oh oh, now someone is saying option 5, since that's the option we used here then it's probably the one you want too ;)

WingDings 14-03-2005 09:14

Re: new upgrades :s

k i will but i have just thought of something else..... i got the 750 package for £19,99 a month, doest his mean i can't get teh upgrade because i saw somewhere about the price of 750 being £24.99

Stephen 14-03-2005 09:14

Re: new upgrades :s

the 2MB price is the same as 750K.

Well it's the morning. I just phoned CS and politely enquired about these speed upgrades and a nice lad called Simon sorted it out there and then for me. He went quite for all of 2 minutes and said reboot the STB and all will be good. In fact, it's all now jamgood and I have a spanking new 3Mb connection.

I just like to say what a helpful and nice bunch of people NTL's CS staff are. Any problems I've ever had has been sorted out at supertime speeds and any questions I've ever had have been answered. (and I used to work for BT doing the same thing, I know what it's like to work on the CS desk.)

So here to you NTL. Cheers, from a very satisfied customer. :D

Hi,

New to this forum! Looks very good - Very informative!

Okay, looking to upgrade my NTL speeds, and just skimmed read hundreds of pages to get an idea on what i need to do.

Currently on a 750k, so i guess i will go up to 2 meg. Currently have a black STB, so i firstly need to get an engineer out to change it to the silver STB. Correct? Then i should hopefully get the 2 meg speeds?

I also wanted to check that im not contracted to NTL for a long term, im planning to move house in 5 months, and i can remember when i first got NTL i had a 12 month contract, i presume that this upgrade doesnt have a contract like that to it - can someone just confirm this?

I also wanted to know when the capping will come into place.. I for one can easily go over 1 gig a day! Will they cap me straight away or will they monitor my usage and then give me a letter warning me and then threaten to cap me?

2mbit upload speed

Hi,

I currently subscribe to the 3mbit service and am getting between 35-37k upload. I'm thinking of downgrading to 2mbit but am put off by the 200k upload speed.

I was wondering if you guys and girls out there on 2mbit are really getting 25k upload, or is it closer to 20k.

Thanks...

Thanks for any help,

There are numerous threads already on this topic. Be more specific, what deal are you talking about? I assume the first 3 month for £xx.xx ??

Update

From Daniel in Customer Services Manchester at 2.30 this afternoon when i tried to upgrade.

There is a problem with the system and the samsung boxes cannot be upgraded until later this month or early next month.

So its another balls up from NTL on the upgrade.

If he put the code on the box would not upgrade and it would lose its connection permenantly.

Damn!!! I'm getting my Samsung box tomorrow...

I'll be phoning NTL anyway to try and get my upgrade just to see what they say, the nice Scottish lady I spoke to last week said I would get my upgrade tomorrow so is this a problem that has just come to light and have any Bromley users who have had a new Samsung STB installed got their 2mb or 3 mb upgrades?

I am on Bromley so it must be a Bromley Problem.

He explained that the file or hit they would send to the STB will not work they can not reverse it because the 750K config file is no longer on the system.

I could not believe it when he gave me chapter and verse on the problem.

I even mentioned cable forum and asked him to repeat it, he did so wrote it all down.

eng - new one on me - what tier were you trying to upgrade to?

Edit: The 750k silver.cm file is most certainly still out there, otherwise the thousands of 750k STBs would be sitting around blinking wondering what had happened. I think he meant the ICMS billing code tbh. And there are quite a few Samsungs on 2Mb out there by my reckoning.

He's probably better informed than me - as I've said I have no involvement in these upgrades - if CS are being told not to upgrade Samsungs to 2Mb then presumably they have a reason.

'eng is on a rock solid throbbing Samsung STB while you're on a piddling little cable modem.

[actually it's because speed tests aren't very accurate - try taking sixteen or so readings, discard the top and bottom values and average]

the 1gb a day has been in the terms and conditions for ages (over a year IIRC) so it does apply to you ;)

Why some people complaining about cap, if it was like that for ages? Oh well.......

I think I have downloaded over 2GB the other day (last month). But its rare, since I was trying to catch up with Manga Anime Episodes.

Hi all,

New here only found the site last week when I got a problem with my new comp and googled it for a solution. I didn't know anything about the upgrade till I read it here so called CS, got passed about a bit but one person was very helpfull, basically I've had loads of probs with my stb, having to reboot 3 or 4 times a week etc (well haven't had to for a while now but they don't know that lol) anyway this bloke told me that my 750k connection with the tv on is asking to much of the box, this is a common problem, he told me to call the people you speak to when you want to disconnect. Anyway long story short(ish) I told them he told me to ask for a stand alone modem, they asked why I was speaking to them so i said that if the problems were not sorted ASAP then my phone, cable and BB would be going elsewhere within the next 6 weeks. Tomorrow their coming to put in the stand alone modem, they would have only done this if I had not put up a further fight for the 2MB upgrade, once they saw reason in the fact it will save them money to do the upgrade at the same time as putting in the modem then I would have had to wait.

So thanks to you on here, I will be visiting frequently.

th'engineer,

Please can you pm me with the details of this "Cable beats ADSL only if its maintained and correctly configured" in your sig.

Cheers

Can I keep my 1.5

Ok I've been with NTL since the first day they baught out BB, 512, then upgraded to 1mbit then recently to 1.5mbit and all this time I have been able to download as much as I like.

My understanding is I have to sign up for 2 or 3meg on the ntl site, right?

So if I dont do this will they just let me keep my 1.5mbit connection with no cap?

My concern is i download around 100gig a month if not more and I would rather be slower with no cap. Am happy with 1.5 if thats the case.

There has been a 1GB per day cap in place for quite sometime now, you have been exceding it for a lot longer than you think.
And no you dont sign up for the speed change, it is automatic once your area is switched on (hardware permitting).

And 100GB per month, your lucky you have gotten away with it this long and what the hell do you download?

EDIT: Welcome to the site by the way :welcome:

Hah well am into mountain biking and am constantly uploading / downloading videos me and my friends have made they have got huge now were getting into making dvd's and have digi vid cams.

So I might aswell upgrade to 3meg then i gues.

I read elsewhere on the forum people were going to a page and typing in their user name and password on the ntl site to upgrade, what was that for then if the upgrade is automatic?

I think it has to do with some users having new set top boxes installed etc. Im not sure of the specifics but my understanding is that the upgrade should be automatic if you are on a stand alone cable modem (might need to reboot) and there may be some problems if you access your BB through a set top box.

I excede the current cap myself quite often (though nowhere near as much as yourself) luckily for people who excede the cap NTL have never really enforced it, though apparently they will be taking this more seriously by the end of this year.

Ok thanks alot for your help.

I have a cable modem so ile just sit tight until it goes faster lol

I think maybe part the reason I havnt been contacted for downloading so much is I live in a realy small village i doubt many people have broadband around here so maybe am not affecting it so much?

This is because some people wanted the new speeds before they were automatically upgraded - therefore instead of waiting - they decided to do it manually themselves. :)

To be honest, I've never had any problems with Customer/Tech support. Sometimes you have to wait a while but everything gets sorted once you speak to a human being.

Hello all ,

I have just got off the phone and have booked an appointment to get a samsung STB , 9th of April for me . Would like to add that the CS guy was great and knew just what I was after so dealt with my query quickly . Only had to wait a short time before speaking to him as well . Have been a customer since the nynex days and in all that time I have had no cause for complaint with the service or support , infact on the occasion a tech engineer fixed a problem by replacing the batteries in our STB handset I was quite impressed , and also felt slightly embarrased . :D

I called NTL on the 12th March and asked for my PAce STB to be upgraded to a Samsung so that I could receive 2MB.

They said no problem and arranged for a swap to take place on 16th March.

NTL have phoned me twice since then to confirm that they will be coming on the 16th.

Let's hope I can get the provisioning sorted out again with my Mac and Airport Express, from memory I need to use IE rather than Safari.

Got my Samsung STB installed this morning as NTL promised, the guy who installed it said I would have to wait about an hour for BB to be up and running, unfortunately I had to go to work about 10 mins after the NTL guy left. Just had a phonecall from my wife telling the BB is still not connected and none of our subscribed channels are working.

Great!!
Now I will have to phone NTL to get that sorted, the guy was in a hurry to get all his morning appointments completed before midday so he didn't check the new STB was working properly before he left.

I won't home until 8:10pm, will I have to wait until tomorrow to phone or will there be someone at NTL to help?

Wow what a mega thread! I have attempted to upgrade to 2meg. without success, gets the address of the modem ok (Terrayon model) but goes on to moan about an SMS error and to contact NTL,which I have done.
The guy on the other end said its not a blanket/nationwide increase but it is being phased in? I should therefore be patient and wait!!??:dozey:
What is an SMS error? And, is anyone running of the ely (cardiff) system (UBR?) getting the 2meg hike?

Been over a week now very disapointed in no upgrade. Customer services told me they can not upgrade over the phone and to wait. I too can not upgrade on website same no SMS error. Nobody as even bothered to address what that issue is. I've given up asking when the upgrade is going to take place. Its like asking how longs a piece of string as far as NTL are concerned.

O well been looking around in the mean time for a company that can give it me now ! Get a move on NTL and stop ****ing of your customers. I wished they had never made the announcements I would have been none the wiser and lot more happier as patience is not a virtue of mine.:td:

Don't forget to ask your new ADSL provider to upgrade speeds for all customers at no cost all on the same day will you?

Your speed increase will come along shortly.

I daresay if you approach it a bit differently someone on here might even be able to look into it for you.

Actually there was announcement in the news somewhere when they pannicked and thought they had better say something as they where being left behind by other ISP offerings.

The fact is that if the speed is available on adsl that speed is availble to all customers depending on distant from exchange of course.

The new NTL speeds are plastered all over ntlhome. So one would assume they are available now. I did hear from a CSREP that it would be about two weeks that would be next week for Coventry thou some in the area allready have the new speeds. Is this correct ? There are two different issues on here those who need to have the STB upgraded and those that don't. I can understand the later taking sometime but what about those who have stand alone cable modems. I'm on 750k so I assumed phoning up to get the a new tier would automatcally put me on a new speed. Sorry no can do.

Its a very valid question if Jack next door can do it why can't I. Oh and when I am on the phone to CS I am one of the most politess of customers.

Well said, Pipex sent an email to a friend of mine saying that he would be upgraded (from 512k to 1Mb) in the near future, like ntl there was an option to upgrade now, FOR £15!!!! !!! people really dont know how lucky they are sometimes, ntl couldnt have rolled out an auto upgrade to 1million customers, the way they are doing it is really no worse than most of the ADSL providers.

So... as risk of looking thick... I'm currently on 300 on a pace stb. I understand that my upgrade will be to 1m, and I will have to ring customer services, but will I need my box changing as well (thinking more time off work needed....) or will it upgrade?

Ah but big difference being the following.

1. Pipex never leaked their information prior to it happening.
2. Pipex have doubled or will be doubling the users speeds with no conditions or sneaking in CAPS.
3. Pipex users on the 512k if they pay the £15 upgrade they will get 2mb until a BT engineer changes a config setting on the exchange to drop it back too 1mb.

and finally 4. Pipex is a decent ISP with no CAPS :D

I don't think there was any panicking at all. Simon Duffy first broached the subject around the start of December last year but no actual date was given and AFAIK no customer has received anything in writing from NTL.

You have got that completely the wrong way round. If a speed is available on NTL it is available to all customers in their broadband enabled areas regardless of distance. With ADSL some speeds are only available at a limited number of exchanges and the actual speed is governed by distance from the exchange and line quality.

The new speeds are plastered all over ntlworld? If you post your postcode we will give you directions to the nearest Specsavers. There is no sign of the new speeds on ntlworld unless you click on the upgrade speed link which customers very rarely do.

The customers who have already had their speeds increased are those that have found out about them on sites such as this and either managed to do an online increase or get a CSR who is willing to upgrade them.

Probably. I've been a cable customer since before the local cableco was bought by NTL, and I've been a broadband customer since it was launched here (before it was mainstream, and before it really needed "registration"). In my dealings with NTL it's pretty clear that their information holdings on me and my account bear very little resemblance to reality (half the time they get my name wrong, for example)!

There is something wrong with your set up you should be getting at least 256K on a set top box .

Use the speed tests
