Hi new to the forums here but been a long time reader, first time poster :)

Anyway just to confirm for anyone in Northern Ireland ive been upgraded to the 2mb today im in the LISBURN area, tried a few speed tests and im getting roughly 1908k/s and 198k/s uploads.

Been with ntl for about 4 years, im happy with the service provided my only gripe being that im unable to subscribe to broadband internet on its own and have to have it as part of a package with set-top box and phoneline, but anyway. Nice to finally post!

I am not sure about that, but what I do know is, the major restructuring that began 12 months ago was designed to make customer services (and the rest of the company) more efficient, and they meant it!

I am starting to see it in many other areas of the business too. Mainly little things so far, but that's where you have to start.

I'm not naive, there's still many things that are wrong, however todays events are the first *major* indication to most people 'on the outside' that things are finally getting better.

My 300k has been upgraded to 1 meg - very easy, and very quick to get through aswell!

Altough first time this woman cut me off and thought i needed a new samsung box for the 1 meg service, but anyway second time round they were very good!

I would doubt that they have put so many extra staff on that it has reduced call waiting times from the 30 min, 40 mins, over an hour, etc that are usually posted. Where would they have got all those extra staff from if they have made so many redundant? Don't forget that it is only people reading this and similar forums that would know about the speed increases.

Why is everyone ringing up, i thought it was 'automatic'? I haven't got it via my stb, do I have to ring up? Reading the last few posts make me think so.

It will happen automatically for many over the next few weeks depending on region and also the equipment the customer already has.

However, some people requested it manually, so where possible, it was done.

I can't see why people are ringing up either, I followed the link given a few pages back and mine was upgraded in about 45 seconds (maybe a minute or so if you include the time to reboot the modem) :D

Many customers have set top boxes for broadband and these cannot be upgraded online.

Just rang CS, chose option 5 as no other seemed to fit, got through to a nice scottish woman.

Me: "Hello, I'm aware of broadband speed upgrades going on. Can you give me any indication of when I'll see the benefits?"
NTL: "They're going on in the next few days. If you like I can upgrade you now?"
Me: "That would be excellent!"
NTL: "OK, hold on just a second..."
*about 20 seconds pass*
NTL: "Right, if you just reboot your STB, you'll be connecting at 2Mbps"
Me: "Thankyou very much!" (secretly thinking WOOHOO!)

Awesome. Upload still seems to be at 128k though...

EDIT: I'm in Leeds, so I suggest anybody else who is does the same!

I think it all depends on who you get, and how nice you are to them, in saying that I was very nice ot the very nice scottish lady, and she said it would upgrade, it has not, so I am not ringing again.

i will just wait to see what happens, whats the point in wasting time hanging on a phone.

On an STB here in Gatley, Manchester. Just phoned and was first told I couldn't as they would have to upgrade the stb to a Samsung. Explained I already had the Samsung, she went away for a few seconds to speak to somebody then came back and said they couldn't force it thorough and I would have to wait. Oh well, it's not as if 1.5Mbps is slow.... :)

Thanks Iain and phil for the response to my question, so 2mb is not a problem.

Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢ve only been on 2 hours and my local area connection show that Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢ve received 61.661.490 bytes, so that around 60mb god I only viewed a few pages and played 1942 online for an hour.

I got some net-meter I better switch it on next time Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢m on too see what I useââ‚Âà ‚¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚¦.

Glasgow south upgraded no problems and I think I did it at three before I went out.

I keep getting this-Unable to Identify Cable Modem
Unable to identify the cable modem MAC (or Ethernet) address. Please reboot your PC and Cable Modem and try again. If you need further help, please contact our customer support (0800 052 2000).

I have spoken to someone in India I think ? Who did not have a clue, so if they cannot identify my cable modem or MAC address will I not be upgraded !

3GB a month is kind of harsh on such a fast connection, atm i am clocking in at around 40 - 60GB a day and the thought of coming home and being limited to that cap is a joke.

Its a good job i live in an area which is supported by other isps.

I just got off the phone to someone anyway, they kept telling me that the speeds would come automatically sometime this week and that she has no clue that other people were doing to speed upgrades on the phone.

I spoke to someone who sounded foreign (a guy) at CS just now.

He was polite and said I've been upgraded to 2MB now from 750k via Samsung STB.

Its been 3 mins since I phoned so hopefully I will get the new speed very soon.

Phew!!! I got 3mbit on Bromley STB (Ex C&W area)

Be warned, it was a nightmare though. I phoned up to switched, the first lady said: "ok, thats all done, please reboot". I hunup, rebooted, and.... nothing. Rang back.. "we have already applied the upgrade, so go to tech support"... Was on the phone to a nice lady for ages and she found out that the first lady just removed my internet. The TS managed to talk to CS and get me back onto the new 3mbit... Phew, had me worried though.

Hope I havent signed a new contract though :disturbd:

Hi, as stated in my post all it takes is a bit of pre-planning on NTL's part. I understand that they can't change everyone's STB on the first day but they could have done it earlier as to save the frustration of being told you'll have to wait. I was in touch with them over two weeks ago about the STB situation but was told they couldn't change it.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

SUGGESTION: Use option 5 when calling CS!

Seeing as the maximum anyone could get on the old package is about 16GB per day, I'm not totally sure how A|ex is getting 40-60GB per day. Or where he's storing it all for that matter.

No, you can only get 1Mbps maximum through a Pace box. Call CS and request they replace it with a Samsung box and that they upgrade you to 1Mbps for the time being.

The Cyclist 08-03-2005 18:29

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

No, the Pace STB does not support 2meg only 1 see my previous posts.

Ah, but the upload's crap, right ?? ;)

I'm now on 2Mbs in Brighton (Bromley) - through the website upgrade page, no hassle whatsoever. :)

This time last year I was gobsmacked at how fast my new 600Kbs connection was, and all for just £24.99 ... ;)

Well done NTL :tu:

Mine is Samsung, not Pace. AFAIK No Pace boxes will support more than 1mbit. (Hell it struggled at that speed). I used have the latest 4000 box, and I still had to have it swapped.

Upgrade to 2mbit stay on 19.99 fee?

My friend is on the 768k service at the old billing rate of 19.99 (from when he signed up for the original 500k package), he was wondering with the upgrade if he would have to pay the 24.99 that everybody is paying or if he would stop on 19.99?

Anybody know the answer?

Thanx

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

If anybody is subscribed to the broadband + Xbox live service from NTL, there is no option online to request this as an upgrade. I was upgraded to 2Mb but could not connect to Xbox live (and vice versa), as I was automatically upgraded to standard 2Mb service. NTL broadband guy suggested this was a slight oversight on NTL's part.

Mention this when upgrading to get the correct package (two IP addresses, etc.).

Hope this helps :)

BTW very pleased with upgrade. Thanks NTL :D

Im not sure if that applies to my area as anytime i have requested this im told that the broadband cannot be subscribed to on its own, ive been paying the extra £19.50 a month since i first got NTL for a phone-line and set-top box that i hardly ever use.

Ill wait till all this upgrade chaos is over and call them again.

Ok, reset my Samsung STB and I now have 2mbit speeds :D

Is it normal to have to put in the Account PID and Password at the BIA Comp Provisioning login again?

Seems like after the upgrade, the mac address changed or something.
