Metropolitan Police face legal action for kettling children during tuition fees protest

Scotland Yard is facing legal action over claims that officers "falsely imprisoned" and assaulted schoolchildren during a tuition fees protest in London last month.

In what is believed to be the first lawsuit taken against police in connection with the violence, lawyers from human rights group Liberty have notified the Metropolitan Police of legal action involving minors who suffered "inhuman and degrading treatment" during a protest on 24 November.

Well it will be interesting to see how this turns out..though a 19 year old is technically not a child. He's a witness.Might be better as a separate thread.

The claim is on behalf of three young protesters, one of whom is a 15-year-old whose foot was broken after allegedly being struck by an officer when trying to leave a police kettle and who claims she was subsequently refused medical help. Another is a 17-year-old London student who became so distressed inside the "kettle" that her father said she came away suffering from shock. The third is Rory Evans, 19, whose ankle was broken during a crowd surge among protesters contained between police lines.

Long and boring but basically containment is legal.

If protestors want different forms of crowd control then it's time for more continental tactics such as CS and water cannon.

The problem is though the protesters don't want any crowd control ,they think that there is no justification for a police presence at all ,they think that smashing windows ect is all part of peacefull protesting

I honestly feel the police are being pushed towards a position where they will have to use the likes of plastic bullet, tear gas and water cannon. If they are not allowed to contain the hooligan students then that will be the only option because what the hooligan students want is to be able to run around rioting and smashing what they want, looting what they want, Beating up who they want, Well what they want is not what they are going to get. The more they riot i feel the more the Government will dig in.

well yes that is correct ,but if anyone can tell the difference between genuine peacefull protesters and those intent on causing damage then fine ,seperate and kettle those and let the peacefull ones continue ...but i don't somehow think it's that simple ,hence the police have to treat all as violent protesters and kettle all of them and untill the genuine protesters can find a way to stop the violence then they will all be tarred with the same brush

Yes i agree ,but if the police start using cs gas and water cannon then i think that will be a point scored for the anarchists amongst them ,i think they would love nothing more than to see those measures as they would see it as a excuse to escalate the violence

Ker-ching!

1. Deliberately ignore warnings from police for the kids to stay away from the protest
2. Get awarded the victory in court because the powers that be would never want to be seen supporting their own police force.
3. Profit.

And anyone that missed out on this get-rich-quick scheme, don't fret! They'll be another one in 2011 so their pot financing will be secure.

Oh and in at least one case a protestor has been proved to be lying. If they publicly state it's not true it must have been blatant lies.

Alfie Meadows, 20, suffered head injuries at the student fees protest in central London on 9 December.

His mother Susan Matthews said police objected to him being treated at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, where some injured officers had been taken.

But the Metropolitan Police's Directorate of Professional Standards said the claims had been "disproved".
