They're FTA at the moment so means additional cost unless you already subscribe to TNT. Means slightly fewer venues will show it too.

Belated news. Although some CF posters praised this development in the USA, without necessarily considering the competition implications, the regulators caught up and it's been canned.

OK sorry I didn't know it was currently free to air not being a fan of rugby. Not such good news then, especially those that don't sub to TNT Sports.

Sell out.

It'll not help the long term future of the game.

The rumour comes from a headline on Rugby Pass which originally said "TNT to consider Six Nations TV deal". It has now been amended to read more neutrally "Six Nations TV rights soon to be up for grabs".

The article itself does include this crucial quote from TNT.
Quote:

A TNT Sports spokesperson said: “While we think the Six Nations is the best international rugby competition in the world, its important partnership with free-to-air television across the UK and Ireland, but particularly in markets like Wales and Ireland, would make our involvement very challenging.”

An update on the DAZN story

- No news as yet on when/if Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund will invest in the company for a rumoured 10% stake
- Blavatnik has poured in another $800m bringing his total amount spent on DAZN to a cool $6.7 bn.

They are looking at the Six Nations though so I still wouldn't rule out TNT Sports

I think every broadcaster including Sky and Channel 5 will look at rights packages when they are offered. But TNT's comments suggest to me they're unlikely to bid. Some may see this as a bluff though!

Of course - it's quite surprising that the next rights deal hasn't been announced with the last tournament under the current contract, about to start.

6N are talking up the value of the rights as per - claims of a £90m deal where a bit of basic analysis puts the figure closer to ~£60m. TNT will of course be interested, but there's massive political pressure to keep the tournament on FTA.

The game would commit suicide by putting the main shop window behind a paywall, but depending what hybrid or sharing model could be worked out, dictates how much of a premium above FTA, TNT (or Sky, for that matter) might be willing to pay. And thus the chances of the 6N taking that route.

Surprisingly, the Six Nations aren’t designated Cat A events by OFCOM.

But it may be that TNT put some of the matches on Quest, or do a deal with either BBC or ITV for England matches.
