On the contrary many believe it will be a gift to Labour at the next election, especially as the new government will be making lots of job cuts.

That would require a lot more than an election. This is a dictatorship rather than a democracy. (dictatorship defined as A type of government where absolute sovereignty is allotted to an individual or a small clique.)
