Back from my first post covid abroad holiday to the Canaries. Back to pot holes, a disintegrating health service, hyper inflation and a nation of ageing non workers... Still at least I'll get a blue passport next year ( made in France), which will be cool I guess.

The poxy age password, I was bored yesterday and watch Legends of the Galaxy, but everytime I filpped to the news ir the next episode I had to enter the password.

Its time OFCOM changed this, I now is to protect kids but 99% of them see far worse on the internet, plus they probably know the code anyway.

Then there are the customers who don't and unlikely to have them in there home.

Surely there should be an opt out option.

This may not disable what you need but maybe you can change the pin to 0000 or something if you can't disable it.

DirectLine having a giraffe with our Home & Contents Insurance renewal quote…

Quote:

Your renewal premium this year will be: £303.52
Last year your premium was: £228.48
33% increase - they can go do one…

It’s not due for renewal until the 28th, so later in the week I’ll get some quotes for comparison…

Add Saga into your comparison. They give a 3 year fixed deal and our home/contents premium was £20+ cheaper this year than the price we had been paying for the last 3 years. You can leave after year one so you aren't tied in either.

Had to phone yet again for the ambulance 10.15pm last night (didn't come till 12.15am) for the horrendous pain in my back, that is 3rd time since Christmas. I pleaded with them for painkillers but they said they were not allowed to prescribe. The doctor phoned me this morning, even she could not oblige. :(

I'm unable to get my prescription for Zapain filled at the chemist because apparently there is a shortage of paracetamol which is an ingredient of the product. I noticed that there is also a shortage of ibuprofen as well.So everyone maybe affected by these shortages.

Just been to the chemists and no joy for me in Yorkshire either. The pharmacist tells me the generic version is available but they can only issue what's on the prescription so I can't have any. Surgery is closed until Tuesday so it's pain or Tramadol for me.

I'm currently struggling to walk,my supply of Zapain has run out and I'm reduced to the last 2 packets of Paracetamol in the house and 8 packs of Ibuprofen that I had to go and purchase through the 2 pharmacies and 2 supermarkets in the village.I'm sure someone somewhere is speculating on these products manufacture especially with the rule of only 32 tablets at any one purchase.

Thanks to all those would be suicides that thought overdosing on Paracetamol was the way to go.When I consider I could buy 100 paracetamol back in the last century.Cheaper too.:(

You will be amazed how good a shave modern electrics give you, assuming your Braun is super old. I went from a Braun to an expensive Philips one and was shocked how much better it was, now don't use as I have embrassed the trimmed beard.

The Braun 3 series (5415) is less than 10 years old. I've temporarily resurrected my old Braun 1508. Just needed the battery replacing.

Though its only a single foil I feel that it did a better job than both its successors.

Did some investigating around like-for-like quotes (moneysupermarket, Halifax, Skipton, (got bank accounts/ISAs with them), Admiral (multi-car policy with them), Saga, NFU, and a couple of others - they all came out more than the DirectLine renewal quote (some just slightly., like Admiral and Halifax, others nearly 50% more, like Saga).

Called DirectLine, and got it reduced to £262, so, if not a win, not such a big loss…

Blame the actuaries. They are the ones who work the figures out. Apparently around here there have been some claims so that affects premiums for others in same area.
NFU quote was so far above the others that while I would like to use them it wouldn't be sensible (233% of the figure we chose to go with).
Like you I called existing insurer and negotiated down but ours had increased because we had made a claim.

If you get a choice of either the numbing spray or sedation I'd go for the sedation every time. I didn't get on well the spray at all. I couldn't tell if I was swallowing or not. But i hope it all goes well.

This will be my 3rd. I have always just had the spray due to the fact I want to just leave after. I hate it tbh as my gag reflex must be pretty bad cuz I am retching on the pipe for a good part of the procedure. Might go with sedation this time though

First world problem I know, but trying to get Mrs G to decide exactly what she's wanting from a holiday so I can make some calls and start getting some prices together.

So far it's either Dubai or Dubai and Thailand, or Las Vegas and San Francisco and somewhere sunny (Mexico or Carribbean).

If you are going for a fortnight, can I suggest 3 days in Vegas, 3 days in Los Angeles (kids can do Disney), then a week in San Diego (SD is always sunny) - nice driving routes as well.

Another tip if you are flying to/from the USA is to fly from LBA to Dublin, then get the flight to the States from there - you clear Homeland Security at Dublin Airport (takes 30-60 minutes max), and the flight is then treated as an internal flight for the USA, and you miss out the 2-4 hours it normally takes to clear Homeland Security when you land.

We did New York some years ago via Shannon to clear customs in Ireland.

We love Las Vegas and will never get bored of going, it's so tacky it's actually quite classy in a funny sort of way.

We've done northern California but never the south so that's something to think about.

Will only be the 2 of us - daughter is married and can afford her own holidays these days!!

Have an elderly Aunty in Old Colwyn so Rhyl is somewhere we've been, maybe I'll leave this one there :erm:.

But being serious, Thailand seems to be off as Mrs G's vegetarian but nearly vegan so food might be an issue. However, it's now looking like Dubai & Goa but the flights might be a nightmare so probably looking like 2 weeks next March in Goa and another trip later next year to Dubai. And we'll also probably end up having a sneaky week in Turkey this September.

kinda resigned to it not happening. I have called Capita and it is still on the system but they try to contact the "health professional" and are getting no reply. They are trying to say they are running late. IMO it is unacceptable leaving people for over an hour now with mental health issues and not at least letting them know

---------- Post added at 12:07 ---------- Previous post was at 10:19 ----------

Still no call. Capita say it needs to be investigated. I told them to make sure it is noted that it is not my fault. I have to call back next Tuesday. Which is endoscopy day so more fun

A bit concerned that I may have been slowly poisoning myself.......

I bought a new Brita water filter jug as the old was looking rather lime scale grubby on the outside and got a good deal for £12.

Took the old jug apart to dispose and found a green film of algae smeared around the top 3rd of the inside of the jug!!! I've used jugs for 10 years and this is the first time I've experienced this. :Yikes: :disturbd:

Re: Moans and Pet Hates - Part 8

Someone has done a proper jobbie on me

Received a letter this morning off Virgin Media demanding payment of £23.78 part of which is an early disconnection fee of 125meg BB and a Telephone line neither of which do I have as I actually have 250meg BB only

Called once and go nowhere as the person could not get to grips with the fact I did not set the account up so have no idea what details were given.

I called again and this time billing kinda understood and asked if I had recently moved. I have lived here for 27 years. So someone who knows my name and address has used my name at a different address to get services and then early disconnected saying I have moved here. I dunno how long this has gone on for or if they are using my ID anywhere else but they must be stupid cuz they must have had these services somewhere.

The agent is getting in touch with VM fraud team about this. I dunno if I should actually call the old bill and report it as identity theft cuz I guess they is nothing stopping them doing this again with something else

I do think they have made an error. I know they used my name and created an email with my surname in. I also know they had a DD which was cancelled before final payment was taken. I also know they disconnected early but only £12 early I do not know how long the account lasted

I am guessing they said they were moving. Gave my real address as the new address as I was asked if I had just moved to which I said no I have been here 27 years. Which means they could have cancelled the DD thinking their last payment was made and did not intend to leave me owing money because if that is the case they are trackable to a working bank account. Lets just hope that is not fraudulent and in my name too

Indian call centres.

Or more specifically their use of English.

When you call up and they say “Can you help me with your account number” or “Can you help me with your name please”

When they ask the latter I always respond with “Certainly, what help do you need?” or “OK, it’s 2 names, one begins with R, the other begins with B”.

Seriously, who the hell is supposedly teaching them British English??

And they really hate it when you correct their English. Countless times I’ve told them it doesn’t make sense to ask that and they say they understand but ask the “can you help me with…” question later in the call.

Vets bills.

Our 14 year old Dalmatian was running in a field yesterday morning, when his back right leg appeared to drop into a dip/hole in the grass, and he flipped over. He was limping all the way home, and favouring it all yesterday.

When we got up to take him for a walk this morning, he couldn’t put any weight on it, and if he tried to walk, his leg would give way - obviously, we tried to get a vet’s appointment to get it checked out, but couldn’t get anything until later this afternoon. His pain appeared to be getting worse, so we contacted the vet and asked for an emergency appointment (which incurs a surcharge) which we got at the other branch of our regular vets; took him there at 11:30, their initial diagnosis was a torn tendon, but recommended x-rays to be sure it wasn’t anything worse.

We took him back to his regular vets, as they had the x-ray facilities there, and left him there (as he needs to be sedated for the x-rays and other checks.

Just got a call confirming it’s just (just!) a torn tendon, and we will pick him up just before 5, and discuss pain management and care with the vet.

Dogs get quicker and better treatment than humans in this country. When pets got ill in my childhood, they got put down and you got another one if you were lucky.

Vets and dentists are bleeding the country dry....

Hope he and your bank balance recover soon.

There is some evidence that some may need to watch the increased sodium level and you can have a bypassed tap for drinking (and outside). When we get our kitchen redone we will be looking at a hardwater feed to the new boiler that can't take softened water in the heating circuit.

Soft water is much nicer. I don't have to descale things especially the trap buried in the shower.

Esure. Obviously they don't want our car insurance business this year. Renewal coming in at £743. So far I've had a quote for £452 from LV and £45 cashback, so looks like I'll be changing companies.

Try Admiral - they actually reduced ours from the previous year (two cars and a pickup truck).

Absolutely raging
No PIP call again (did not bother to call on the 18th April) . Called them the guy said your appointment is the 17th not the 5th. I was like BS is it I have a letter and a text and even an email off customer relations saying it is today. He said well I can not see any cancellation. I asked if he was calling me a liar and asked if some magical computer fairy got in there and changed it

Anyway he eventually put me through to customer relations who said they could actually see a cancellation and how it was done meant I was not told. I asked if she thinks that makes it alright then and she said no. I went on the say now I have the stress of another 12 days waiting and she said she could get me an appointment for the 10th instead.

I did ask if this is all a ploy to get claimants to give up

My 22 year old niece got a quote for renewal that was £1,100 with a black box. Shel told them she's phoned around and been quoted £850, they matched it and that is without the black box.

Coin mechanism on the supermarket trolley: When I go to dock it and get my £1 back the key goes in but the coin tray wont open nor will the key come back out.

Anyhow I carry a small screwdriver in my bumbag so I took delight in the gratuitous destruction of said tray mechanism to retrieve my coin. It wont do that again. :D

Capita - hope they get the arse sued out of them if this leak leads to people being defrauded.

I just received an email from one of my Pension providers.

Quote:

Dear Hugh

We wrote to you recently to advise that some of your personal information was held on Capita computer servers accessed by hackers earlier this year.

We use Capita’s technology platform (xxxxxxxx) to support our in-house pension administration processes and have been liaising closely with the company over the course of its forensic investigations.

We are proactively engaging with Capita in respect of their ongoing investigations into their cyber incident, but we understand the USS data concerned was contained in files generated by them from the main xxxxxxxx system, and held separately on their servers, to facilitate operational processes.

Capita have identified from their investigations that personal data was “exfiltrated” (i.e., accessed and/or copied) by the hackers. The information accessed includes your title, initial(s), and name, your date of birth, your National Insurance number, your xxxx member number and your retirement date.

Capita confirm that they have taken extensive steps to recover and secure the data as well as monitoring the dark web to confirm that data compromised as a result of this incident is not circulating more widely.

We very much regret that this has happened. We are committed to supporting you.

To help you to monitor your personal information for certain signs of potential identity theft, you have been given free access to a 12-month membership to Identity Plus, a monitoring service provided by Experian – one of the UK’s leading Credit Reference agencies.
Capita are a bunch of cowboys.

Re: Moans and Pet Hates - Part 8

How can they possibly recover the data? That is more than enough info to steal your ID

Capita must have their fingers in a lot of pies. My run in with them sucks too

Capita are a bunch of cowboys.

Ahah

If your personal data have not been fully harvested from USS, then join Experian's Identity plus. They are hacked on a regular basis (at least once a year)

https://krebsonsecurity.com/2023/01/...asted-47-days/

https://www.hackread.com/experian-vu...redit-reports/

etc. This way, you will make sure that the hackers have a full and up-to-date set of your personal data.

On a serious note, USS's planning tools (when you login in "my USS") are faulty (inaccurate, useless, do not work). They are currently working in fixing them but curiously they have not been withdrawn.

Update: I forced them to withdraw them. Log in and see

BlackBasta (the hackers that stole the data from Capita, the IT provider of USS) published (in April) a section of the file on their Tor site "Basta news" but they deleted it few hours later. Speculation is that Capita (no comment/denial from them) or somebody else bought the file back.

My old router died last night (LRT224). :(
The power supply appears to have gone faulty, and eventually took out the router.
Its been solid for 5 years, so I suppose I cant complain too much, but still annoying.
Had to press an old Wifi router into service while I waited for Amazon to deliver me my new one.

Why are routers so flaky? Most other electrical devices, radios, toasters, fan heaters, last for decades.

You are confusing electrical with electronic - toasters, etc. are quite simple machines; routers are mini-computers.

Your radio/toaster isn’t on 24/7, carrying out complex tasks like a router…
