Quite how anyone at the Met thought that the leak which lead to the Milly Dowler story (the story which kicked off this whole thing!) could have been "not in the public interest" amazes me.

Also ridiculous that the decision to try and use the Official Secrets Act in this way was made without consultation with more senior officers, and was made without initial advice from the DPP.

Separately, it emerged that this week US prosecutors at the Department of Justice have written to Murdoch's News Corporation requesting information on alleged payments made to the British police by the News of the World. The DoJ is looking into whether the company may have violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).
Under FCPA laws, American companies are banned from paying representatives of a foreign government to gain a commercial advantage.

So even if the Dowlers don't prosecute in the US there are those who may well pursue the Murdochs through the courts anyway.

It's not the Dowlers, it's the lawyer the Dowlers used - he is now trying to gather clients in the US.
