Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I access the internet through the set top box, At the moment i get a flawless 4mb with a good ping to my online game server, I only really play on one. What i want to know is how will i be able to tell when i have been upgraded. I can't do the 192.168.1.1 thing to find anything about my modem as it is a stb. I believe the Samsung box is capable of around 6mb which in all honesty is fast enough as i don't bother downloading stuff just use the net and games. We have stopped using the STB for TV and was wondering could i cancel the box as it costs extra tenner or something but still be connected to internet or shall i just take a chance and say i want modem and please take the box away.??

I only ask this now because my area is not yet upgraded CH42 wirral and am concerned in case they disconnect me from the stb and the modem is not as good.

You would be better calling up Customer Services and asking for an upgrade to a Stand Alone Cable Modem as with your present Samsung box you can only receive 6Mb but with a SACM you can upgrade if you wanted to 20Mb, plus you would get a better connection.

The should be quite happy to upgrade you as the company would prefer all customers to swap to SACM.

Call Customer Care not Faults because they would have to transfer you as they cannot change your account.

Customer Care - 150 (Options 1 then 3)

Hi

Its a wired network at my place...i'm still thinking its the connection rathern than my set up, it worked more or less ok when i used the 4mb but now with the 10mb its sh*t...

However, downloading and streaming is far better...

Is anyone else experiencing similar issues with online gaming ? LIVE ?

It appears that the Wirral has finally, although still listed as TBC, been upgraded to 10mb. Well done Virgin. My comp seems to be sailing along quite merrily at 9.2mb download speed (for now).

Reading, Winnersh still tbc. Is that because of high users numbers?

Camberley/Farnborough down the road was one of the first.

Oh well my 4mb is doing well, good pings (not as good as NTL times) and topped out downloads.

I've recently been upgraded to a 10 Meg connection but I am unable to get anything greater than around 5.6 Megs download speed irrespective of whatever I try. My internet connection is via USB rather than Ethernet .. could that be the reason and if not that then what else could it be ? For info, I don't have p2p software running and I've tried it with my firewall switched off too.

:welcome:

It is always worth trying ethernet, rather than USB, for connection to the internet, in my opinion.

It's because your connecting through USB. USB is only capable of speeds up to 6 Mb/s. You need to connect via Ethernet and it should deliver the 10 Mb/s.

Is it just a case of powering down and changing the connection or is there something else I need to do in terms of configuration ?

yes if your pc has an ethernet port

Or if it hasn't, you just need to install a NIC Card, probably PCI, which are usually around £10. Though you shouldn't have to as most new computers have an integrated ethernet port.
