well i suppose with the recession as it is we are going to need all these channels as less and less people go out and stay at home watching the tv.

Perhaps, in the meantime, you should display Test Card F until normal service is resumed. :)

Actually, does this mean stuff like Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down and Wish Lists?

Pretty much, box will launch with a basic TiVo service this year, things like dedicated smart phone remote record apps will come early 2011.

I would imagine also that contracts with providers will be in negotiation for some time so some content will not initially be available.

I'm a bit concerned about the possible pricing. The US site states a purchase price (fair enough) and then $20 a month subs for it.

The cable TV market in the US works very differently to the UK. In the US you can "bring your own" cable box, you buy a CableCard from the cable company and plug it into your own box.

Obviously there's still some cost to Virgin Media but there is with any box they provide, we'll still end up paying some sort of fee to get the TiVo hardware but it won't be hundreds of pounds.

TiVo provide all of the EPG and back end services, there will still be a monthly cost for this, whether VM include it in the XL package and others pay a couple of quid a month is yet to be seen!

They will have to otherwise take up will be low who wants to pay say 150 for.the box and 10 a month sub. There will be other companies this year offering internet connected boxes like Google Tv , youview etc.

Trust me mate them sort of pricing models here in the UK would make TIVO a massive flop. Don't forget Virgins main competitor now offer a Sky+HD box for free granted if you want the 1tb Sky+HD box you have to pay 249 up front but there's no monthly sub for the box.

There is if you want HD which would be the main reason for getting a 1TB box

Virgin also offer a low cost or free HD DVR.

Free Sky+HD box, with free standard set-up when you join Sky online with the HD Pack.

Free Sky+ box (£30 set-up) when you join Sky TV online with Sky Broadband and Talk, Sky Movies or Sky Sports, otherwise £49 plus £30 set-up.

Virgin Media - 6 months half price on our most popular bundles
V+ box - £49
Installation - Free
£50 credit on triple bundles

Without an ongoing monthly sub the box becomes a standard HD digibox with no DVR functionality. HD is extra and Anytime+ requires additional subscription services on top.

What use is a Virgin box with no sub does it even work, my point was you don't pay a fee for the DVR function you pay for the HD channels which you do with Virgin if u take sky premium HD and if there was a monthly fee for TIVO this would be extra.

Only with Sky premium HD. Not for basic pay HD, ESPN HD, PictureBox HD or PPV HD.

The hardware is only free if you take HD mix, otherwise £30 to £79 depending on your bundle. HD mix is extra, Anytime+ is extra and without an ongoing monthly sub that Sky 1TB HD DVR which you just bought for £250 is nothing more than a standard non-DVR digibox which can pick up a half dozen FTA HD channels and delivers poor quality SD.

It's not rocket science if you buy a 1tb sky box that you have to take a package jeez. You can buy a HD box for 79.00 and take 1 sky mix and get free DVR functions with cable you pay for this function unless your on XL.
