What sort of banners? The only one I ever see is "have you done with this show".

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

It’s the one you see when you change channel. If you’re already watching a particular channel when a recording starts or ends then the banner appears.

Oh, right. Never see that as I always watch the recording and never live :)

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

You also see it if you’re watching an in-progress recording and the recording finishes.

I still watch some sport live, or at least catch up shortly after its started. It can be a bit irritating as you'll often miss a couple of seconds of action

Only if you're watching live; ie have previously pressed the "Live TV" button. If you watch from a recording you don't see it; only the 'have you done with this..' one :)

Lew means if you're recording something, and you start to watch it from "my shows" before its fully recorded, you see a banner when the recording finishes even though you haven't finished watching it. Not sure if I've explained that very well, but I know what he means and have experienced the same.

Which is what I do.

Which I have never yet seen. Which is why I'm  But that's possibly because I rarely catch up to live, and if I do I usually stop the recording myself :)

Yes Andy, that's exactly it and I understand why this happens now, thanks... doesn't stop it being annoying though!

It sometimes kills the buffer of whatever you were watching as well, rather annoying.

Yeah, Ben have you had any official complaints about this mate?

I used to record boxing "live" to DVD but don't anymore due to this very problem. I'm a quality freak. Having the programme banner popping up during the broadcast bugs the hell out of me and ruins the recording. I now record all shows to DVD from recording now instead, which is a pain.

It does if you don't add any padding :)

Only if you watch things live ;)

Huh? It has to kill the buffer when it switches channels or starts/stops recording. It can't not do that.

Sure it can, but tivo would have to change how the tuners handle recording. I'm surprised the actual recordings are done in such a clunky way, would have expected tivo to have used a more virtual recording methodology rather than on/off and that's your lot.

It's really annoying, especially if you are watching something after a live program that was being recorded with some extra padding. Once that recording finishes, your buffer is wiped and you can't rewind back to anything that was already on. I'm pretty sure if you had it delayed it also skips you ahead to live as well.

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 3

The other day i found some old VHS tapes i wanted to watch and dug out the old video player to watch them on. I realise we pay a subscription fee with Tivo and expect a billion wonderful new things a year but watching these old tapes reminded me just how far we have come. You could only record one thing and watch another - no series link. If you had sky and managed to wire it up to record onto your VHS then you could not change the channel at all. No pause live tv - no rewinding because someone coughed during an important bit - no catch up or on demand - less channels obviously - rubbish quality but we still thought Dvd was amazing - much less space to record etc etc
I did not realise just how much i have to be grateful for. Consequently i wont really moan that there are not enough +1 channels or boo hoo no sky atlantic... it is basically amazing - glitches and all.
I am not a Luddite or technophobe just sometimes its nice to be reminded of how things were and how even then they were cool...
