Thankyou. :)
Boiling hot water does indeed do a lot of damage to the layers of the skin.
I'm glad she is ok now though. Taking pain relief to help.

I have some sea salt flakes & crystals.

But both have a best before date. But I thought salt was a preservative, and therefore why would it have one?

hahahaha one would assume the salt would be fine if kept properly. I have vinegar with a best before date too

Where I worked we used a heck of a lot of salt, the bags once had a Best Before date but it was eventually replaced by the date of manufacture . . . which still had to be recorded for traceability.

So, since December the Bank of England base rate has risen from 0.1 to 0.75%.

My bank has generously raised the interest paid on my savings account from 0.01 to 0.1%.

Unfortunately, not yet living back in the UK, I can't open an account with another bank that pays better rates.

Or Premium Bonds. (Av return about 1% and the chance of a big payout). All dwarfed by inflation unfortunately. Not sure if you can apply if not UK resident.

If you can afford to tie down the money then the stock market is prob best with its associated risks of course.

Alternatively spend it. Might be best atm and more fun ;)

On Saturday, the M11 J7 was shut northbound to J8 (Thanks to a new J7a being build)

So all traffic was going through my town, It took me 45 minutes to get out of the Sainsbury car park.

Traffic was still manic at 8pm.

My on-line business banking (HSBC) needs the use of a security device that generates a 6 digit code after you enter your PIN number but the website is rejecting it as invalid. It's a replacement as the original's battery ran down and cannot be replaced.

I know it's correctly programmed with my PIN because if I enter the wrong code it says PIN FAIL

I'm going to have to go down into town and visit the branch to see if they can suss out what the problem is. :(

TBH if you are coming from the west then this is not too bad as you go from the M25, A10 then A120, from the east, its not so easy.

I've been to Lakeside and the M11 was screwed, and it took me the A10, A414 route

Our bin men have been on strike since March 21st and don't go back until April 11th. As you can imagine some of the rubbish meisters round here are already drowning in the stuff. It won't be long before the foxes and seagulls have the stuff strewn about the streets. :(

The only thing we have piling up is re-cycleables as the wheelie bin is stuffed but I can always store them in the garage and feed them out over the next month or so. At least we don't make much trash and that wheelie bin is only 1/3 filled.

We are good at rubbish in my house, the non-recyclable bin could take me about 6 weeks to fill, the same with the recyclable which is a 3rd bigger.

If I broke down boxes I could last longer, but as it's every 2 weeks I just bin it.

I was so happy to get my 4th Covid jab yesterday, until around tea time when the side effects started to kick in, I was frozen, went to bed 9 pm after a cup pf milky drink, put on a woolly cardigan and extra blanket, lay shivering for half the night, other side effects:-
  • a sore arm from the injection
  • feeling tired
  • a headache
  • feeling achy as if I had flu

Sainsbury's have ruined their cling film. It's so clingy you can't even get it off the roll cleanly. I've thrown it away and will have to try and find a brand that actually is usable.

I had been buying Lidl's own brand until a couple of years ago when they managed to ruin it with similar clingy-ness combined with tearing lengthwise and getting raveled up round the roll.

Try Beeswax reusable wraps - nowhere near as cheap as cling film but also not use once and bin. Not sure the product is as eco-friendly as they say but if you take the claims at face value you can have that smug feeling of doing your bit. And I believe they're made in the UK.

Back in the 90s, I was asked to give a presentation to a large group of Polish government IT bods (in Warsaw); the topic was Microsoft vs Apple. But never mind that.

I had brought a roll of clingfilm with me and demonstrated what had been wrought upon the country as a result of liberation from Communism.

I hate the stuff but have to admit it can be useful at times. I keep mine in the freezer and it's much easier to control. I mainly use silicone covers which work well. They can fit on round, oblong or square containers.

Discord . . the super duper communications thing used by gamers and the like.

I'm playing more since retirement, so found a group of people to play alongside, most of which use the 'fabulous' discord when gaming.

I download it, install it, then create an account . . which is immediately flagged as 'suspicious' for some reason they can't (or won't) reveal. It continually asks me for phone number verification instead of email address . . I've never given my phone number and never will.

Their 'support' tell me a phone number is now (as of around 6 months ago) a requirement. I ask them why, as verification by either phone or email makes no real difference to how I'll conduct myself online . . . no answer . . I'm now convinced phone number requirement is a scam and they're selling the numbers on, screw em, lots of people being locked out of accounts because of this.

. . . how much is the cheapest 'burner phone' (oooh that will get the FBI looking now) to use for circumventing bollix like this?

GrimUpNorth 24-04-2022 11:45

Why not get a burner SIM - if you get a PAYG that works in your phone it may cost less than a cheap phone.

I have my phone for 2 step verification. Don't have any issues. A few other services such as PSN and others use phone for 2 step. It's seen as more secure as only you will likely ever have the phone. Where as email accounts can also get hacked and could be accessed to get the verification code.

Christmas decorations will be in the shops soon to replace the Easter eggs that have been displayed since January and still are in my Tesco.

Substitutions with Asda online shopping. Lemon Sherberts replaced with boiled mint sweets? Frylight sunflower oil spray for Frylight butter spray?Wholemeal rolls for white rolls when I ALREADY had ordered white rolls. So many substitutions for items that were in stock when I ordered them last night.

However I'm just not up to to going to do a big shop these days. It's too heavy on my back and arms. And yes I could tick no substitutions but I reckon I could end up with nothing at that rate.

I guess that the pickers are just not paid enough to care about providing a service for the elderly, infirm and disabled.:(

On another note, the Lycra brigade scourge is out in full force. Has been since Easter, loving every minute of building up a huge traffic queue behind them. This matter is as important as anything else going on in the country!

We shop with trsco and make sure no substitutions is enabled. Last weeks shop had no missing items for first time in ages.

Asda subs are great cuz you deliberately do not read the morning email and then just refund them online as unsuitable and you keep them free hahahaha

Works up to a point - if you ask for too many refunds the automatic approval stops working. Once you have a human reviewing your refund requests there comes a point where they start refusing you

There are two reasons why that happens:

Firstly and foremost the pickers cannot manually override substitutions. They used to be able to substitute an item for whatever they wanted to right off the bat it something was out of stock. If for example you were obviously vegetarian based on what had already been picked for you (e.g. no meat items and loads of Quorn) and you ordered an Asda Cheese and Tomato pizza and it was out of stock, the picker can choose to substitute it with a Goodfellas Cheese and Tomato pizza. The problem with this is that whilst it is great for the customer who is paying the same price, the store/company has to absorb the cost and when you look at home shopping sales on a weekly basis you are looking at ten of thousands of £££ across the business just in substitutions. You might think "well Asda can afford it" but home shopping hardly makes any money at all because the money you pay for delivery doesn't cover the cost to pay someone to pick your items, load it onto a van, pay for someone to bring it to pay, for the fuel, pay for vehicle maintenance, the IT stuff for it all to run etc. It takes a massive chunk out of the profit margin and drops it from 30% for a normal customers shopping to 5% for home shopping. If you start substituting stuff willy nilly and giving people Andrex toilet rolls instead of Smart Price then you are losing money.

So bearing this in mind, Asda updated their software a couple of years ago so that it "suggests" (basically tells you) a substitution in the event that your selected item is out of stock. In the example I gave above, if your Asda cheese and tomato pizza was out of stock, it would then tell them to substitute it with meat feast, and if that was out of stock it would cycle through peperoni, ham & pineapple and the entire range trying to give you something for the same price so it doesn't cost the company any more money and potentially another £1/£1.50 for a Goodfellas pizza. Once those options are exhausted as a last ditch effort the picker has an option to provide a manual substitution but at this point it has already taken too long cycling through the options and waiting for each screen to load.

The pickers have to pick 180+ items per hour which is one item every 20 seconds minimum. That time allowance (which is strictly monitored and scored) doesn't provide for them going through that substitution process and giving you something sensible and an equivalent for what you ordered. Statistically the majority of people who have substitutions are content in keeping them (regardless of whether they like them or just cant be bothered to return them) so Asda's attitude is to substitute it with anything so they still get the money off you, knowing that there is a good chance you won't return it. It is in the picker's best interest from a performance point of view to substitute a missing item with whatever the first recommendation is so a) they are keeping to their time limit and b) won't get told off for subbing with a not-recommended product

Putting all that into context for you and looking at your specific examples above, I am 99% sure they are substitutions suggested by the software and not manual substitutions selected by the picker because from Asda's point of view they are equivalent products.

Availability and substitutions are a big issue for all retailers, not just Asda. I know it is a stinky attitude but if you don't like it you can either do you own shopping and pick your own food or try ordering from somewhere else. The cost pressures on e-commerce are immense and more and more people are switching to online shopping all the time which means retailers are taking the same amount of money and making a fraction of the profit they used to. This means there has to be compromises and/or savings elsewhere and they are always looking at ways to manage this.

The Job centre has put me in contact with JETS, which is a part of the Shaw Trust.

It has a CV checker on there but, it is crap, it says I have spelling mistakes, but these are company names, and over 5 fonts when I only have 2.
It also goes on about mixed capitals like Level and level" the first is part of a qualification the over is in a word.

Shaw Trust is a good organisation, I worked with them years ago and my partner takes referrals from them now, that aside good luck with the job hunt, there's more vacancies than unemployed people at the moment so there's possibly never been a better time to be looking for work :tu:

It would be good if companies said sorry your application was unsuccessful, rather than nothing, the same goes for those that you have an interview with.

Fortunately I've never been unemployed but I think I'd get dissolutioned if companies didn't have the manners to tell you that you'd been unsuccessful, particularly after giving you an interview. They should be ashamed.

This will kill the UK caravan and trailer markets, as most electric cars cannot pull them, and i'm not talking about the small models.

Having a new kitchen fitted by a well known kitchen supplier and there are 3 items which will be delivered 5 days later (the fitters will have to do an extra day on a Saturday) ! The washing machine is the wrong one (correct on the original order and on the delivery note) ! you would think that the personal that pick or load the vehicle would do a check.

There's a reason these companies usually ask for all the money upfront.

Not quite true, it all depends if the manufacturer has had the car type approved. This site has a list of electric cars that are type approved and can have a towbar fitted and their towing weights. Of course you'll take a hit on range but that's true for any powertrain when towing. I don't own a caravan myself but wouldn't let your worries put me off buying one.
