Although Sky operates in more than one country, you can hardly describe them (at least at this stage) as a global player.

Netflix and Amazon have much deeper pockets than Sky and are capable of bidding higher, if they chose to do so.

You don't need to be a global player to have big pockets.

Europa League Qualifying starts in the coming week - it looks as if Premier Sport will have Rangers matches.

BT Sport rights do not cover qualifiying.

Are we to conclude from that observation that you have evidence that Sky's pockets are at least as great as Netflix and Amazon?

If so, please tell, because all the evidence I have seen is to the contrary.

Comes into play next year

Sky seem to shift the business model away from sports rights nowadays

Interesting few days ahead for UKTV sports rights

Firstly the results of the ECB tender will be out this week, tomorrow is the deadline for bids. Results could be out the same day or by the end of the week if there is a second round.

Secondly the deadline for the EFL to go out to tender passed last week. Not sure if that was for invitations to tender or actual submissions.

In any case the next week is a massive one for SKY and BT or maybe someone else??

Apparently the ECB are concerned about the popularity of the game so we might just see a little more cricket on the terrestrial channels perhaps.

One of the packages is for FTA matches from the new 20/20 city competition plus some international 20/20 both mens and womens, so there will definitely be some cricket on terrestrial.

To be fair, aside from the fact that's how most sport is going nowadays, the new team at ECB seem to be addressing this with the new T20 league and the FTA packs up for tender, although I'd like to see some test cricket in there as well but guess that's not attractive for their schedules.

Sky Sports and ECB agree landmark partnership for England Cricket.

Quote:

Sky Sports has agreed a new five-year partnership with the England & Wales Cricket Board that includes live rights to international and county cricket from 2020 - including every match from the new T20 competition - and a ground-breaking commitment to drive participation and further interest in the game.

BBC to broadcast live TV coverage of English international and domestic cricket

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/40455556

Quote:

English international and domestic cricket will be shown live on BBC TV for the first time in 21 years from 2020.
In a five-year deal with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), more than 100 hours of cricket will be broadcast each summer.
The contract includes live TV coverage of England men and women's Twenty20 internationals and the ECB's new men's domestic T20 tournament

Great news about BBC but as a Cricket Fan who refuses to subscribe to SKY Sports I can't hide the fact how disappointed I am to see BT come away with nothing. I thought they would have at least picked up the new T20 rights.

My bias aside, I still think it's short sighted of the ECB as surely the reason they have had such a windfall this time around is due to BT's interest. With them effectively out of the picture until 2025 they could well decide to drop their strategy for covering cricket and focus investments on other sports meaning SKY potentially pick up the next ECB rights for considerably less.

As to BT and their cricket strategy what do they do now? I'm sure Aussy cricket is not enough to sustain then, so do they call it a day after those rights expire? ICC rights are tied up until 2024 so their not much left. Really it's just the IPL and various overseas international rights as they come up.

No, as my profile picture suggests I'm very much anti Murdoch, even hate the thought that part of my Virgin Media XL sub goes to Sky. Tightness does not come into it at all, I'd pay if could get the content legally elsewhere, I do for NFL.

To be honest, if you looked into the head of most companies, you would probably have issues with them!

Take my advice, just purchase what you need and don't get sucked into the politics.

The alternative is a Communist society, and then you would have no choice at all.

Apart from whether or not to join the bread queue.

I say to you what I said to Mr Hoover, I am not or have ever been a member of the communist party :D

In a free market I'm free to listen to my conscious and choose whether or not I buy from Murdoch.

True that you can pick holes with many companies/organisations but in my opinion there are some that are far more corrupt and unethical than others and once certain lines are crossed I usually try my best to boycott them.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Details of the EFL tender in The Times today, I got this from a post on Digital Spy

Quote:

"The EFL will allow the number of league games broadcast live to almost treble, from 112 to 324 matches a season in 2019-20. Up to 228 of the 552 Championship matches would be live, compared with 92 at present.

The rights will be split into separate packages, The Times has learnt, with a weekend package, including the play-offs, of a minimum of 114 and a maximum of 228 live games, and a midweek package of up to 96 matches. There will be a third package for the Carabao Cup — the new name for the EFL Cup — with all those matches available to be shown live. Interested broadcasters will be asked to stipulate how many matches they intend to show.

The EFL will also allow broadcasters to screen matches simultaneously, as happens now with BT Sport and the Champions League, so viewers can choose which live game to watch."

This is a game changer IMO

No, I mean a game changer as in match choice and multiple matches being shown at the same time and the impact this could have on what the PL decide to do (do they further increase matches available, make all midweeks available, etc.)

As to needing two subs for EFL although there is a chance I would not say it's highly likely, 50/50 at best.

If SKY get the weekend packs you can be sure they will get midweeks packs as BT already have more than enough midweek content so I imagine they will focus their bid on weekends.

If BT get the weekend packs, then I very much doubt SKY will just take midweeks as they traditionally don't go in for secondary rights. Of course in this scenario someone like Eurosport could jump in and pick up midweeks.

In any case for most EFL supporters even if you opt for just whoever gets the weekend pack you'll probably have considerably more games available than you do now and better chances of seeing your team on TV.

Hopefully one or the other will pick up all the rights.

As I say many have been paying £13.75 for all Sky Sports on half price discount why would they pay £18 for just one channel.

I would image so which will make it £53.50 for the full pack

Actually, it might be less £49.50 with the TV channels?

The new package of ten channels and an unrivalled schedule of live sport is available for the same price (£27.50 per month), which will remain frozen for 12 months. Existing customers will receive the new Sky Sports package automatically and the new channels will replace the existing line-up.

For the first time, Sky Sports will also offer something for fans not looking for the full breadth of sports, but are interested in specific sports. The new line-up is designed to grow this customer base and offers flexibility to subscribe to individual channel packages at a new price. One channel pack will be available for just £18 per month, two for £22 and three for £26.

Sky and Virgin are very good with the art of deception and confusement when it comes to their prices.

I wonder whether this will trickle down to Now TV, could be even more attractive on there as long as they keep it cheaper than through the main services.

No increase on the complete Sky Sports bundle at £27.50 , I wouldn't be shocked if they start price increases on the Entertainment packs thus meaning everyone has to pay it.

BT are getting Main Event and something they are calling Sports Sports Extra (not the PL channel) which is just an overflow channel for PL games not shown on main event

Sky seem to have used this change to shaft BT by giving them just the bare bones to satisfy ofcom. BT missing out on the cricket rights will hurt even more now. I'm sure it will only motivate them even more to win the EFL rights.

I'm not saying BT won't win the EFL but if they do you'd imagine they'll have to pay handsomely for it. Sky Football would look particularly weak with no EFL.

And Sky will go as high as they need to retain those rights.

Oh please let sky win the EFL. Keep football off BT Sports. The more they get the more theyll take it out of the XL package and go

"we have more football now you have to subscribe now and pay for our terrible pundits"

Steve Mcmanaman is still a pundit and yet went down with Setanta and ESPN. Surely he must be seen as a curse?!

Definitely puts XL/Full House at risk if BT win more rights but then again I think the extra paid for CL this time already has put the next agreement at risk.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

The expectation from boxing and UFC fans is that the upcoming Mayweather Vs. McGregor fight will be shown on SKY Box Office for around £20.00.

Their UK media tour hits London this Friday with the UK broadcaster being confirmed. Their conference takes place at Wembley Arena shortly after the weigh in's take place for Chris Eubank J.r Vs. Arthur Abraham which will be shown on ITV Box Office this coming Saturday.

I have a sneaky suspicion that ITV might have landed the rights for the circus that is Mayweather Vs. McGregor. This would be a huge thumb in the eye for SKY Sports.

We shall wait and see. My crystal ball has known to have around a 10% success rate lol

Looks like they will go for a social media / streaming model.

Interesting times. SKY launch a dedicated golf channel and the PGA look to find their own model.

How much live content, roughly, will SKY show on this gold channel? I'm not a gold fan at all. I have no idea what these events are and how long they last for. I do know the Ryder Cup.

Interesting stuff, sounds like they are going to stream it on Twitter or something

That's ok for clips but if I'm sitting down for hours to watch the final round of a major I'd only watch it on TV!

I wouldn't at all be surprised if the US PGA had plans already in place to live stream on someone like Twitter and this put pressures on the negotiations with Sky.
