The most obvious reason to accept a short term contract (over none) is that taking a hit later rather than now is an improved financial outcome. Regardless of how many people genuinely have BT Sport as a factor for subscribing tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, will be onto retentions.

AFAIK any initial interest shown in buying the BT Sport channels came to nothing. Perhaps they intend to make it (more?) profitable by cutting out the middleman and keeping all the subs* by streaming??

* They would have to pay a commission to VM if they put this on VM. Perhaps this is what any dispute is about. Wasn't it Disney + who wouldn't join because VM wanted too big a cut?

I’d say they are more likely to exit the market entirely.

Speaking of interest in buying the BT Sport channels (or lack of interest):

TiVo has reveal that Eurosport UHD and BBC Red Button HD are both showing listing after August 11th.

Eurosport 3 HD to Eurosport 9 HD will have "Coming soon" from 2am on August 9th.

Well, i've just been reading that BT Sport no longer has some of the rights that they previously had. Maybe it is actually winding down.

The "Coming soon" listings could be because the entire listings originally were "Coming soon" and they only updated for actual content.

At least they have confirmed that they won't be buying. I doubt that ITV have a lot of spare cash around following the downturn in the advertising market during lockdown.

I can't remember as I was surfing the internet. From what I remember, it said something along the lines of BT Sport had lost a fair few rights over the last one or two years and were now going to/have lost the Women's Championship League and Bundesligue. It was also speculated that they would lose WWE to Comcast to put onto Peacock as has happened outside the UK.

As far as i know the WWE/BT contract was a 7 year deal, unless something has changed aka WWE bought the contract back.

In the US you have to subscribe to Peacock to get the WWE Network material - it is not available on the free ad-funded package.
Also, they do not get the weekly Raw and Smackdown shows until at least 28 days after they transmission on other networks as these rights are different. So currently on US Peacock the latest shows are from the last week in June and we are in August.
