Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
My connection has been all over the shop tonight.
However:- Sat, 03 Dec 2005 20:56:19 GMT 1st 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec 2nd 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec 3rd 128K took 110 ms = 1191564 Bytes/sec = approx 9914 kbits/sec 4th 128K took 109 ms = 1202495 Bytes/sec = approx 10005 kbits/sec Not sure whats going on, but my connection sometimes drops below 2mb then disconnects. |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Well my connection is dropping like a brick at the moment, it's usually ok up till 5pm and then diabolical. Have had this before usually when NTL upgrade speeds and everyone in my area goes mental downloading. Hopefully it will get better when the novelty wears off a bit

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
My connection has dropped 3 times since the 10mbit upgrade with my NTL:Home 120 cable modem. Seems like after a day's usage, the modem will just black out.. cant contact it, or send data through it at all, yet it remains in sync? Tech support claimed the modem is fine with the service. not good :(
It never ever use to drop before. |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Hi All
Seems to be common, my speeds are all over the place. Have had uptp 10mg, but never below 4.5mg. I think I will wait till it settles down before I do any proper testing.:erm::erm::erm::erm::erm: |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
My speeds have varied from <1Mb to 6.50Mb
not a happy bunny |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
My speeds are utter crap when I use any type of speed test... but pretty steady if I download files from newsgroups or other sources like here for instance I get a steady 1.23mb/s til all 693mb is done! this is the free linux knoppix cd.

I do not understand........................................
10mb ntl 120 xp pro Belkin Router 7230-4 Downloading almost instant full speed Speed test within ie6 my rate is 4mb max Same result with a direct connection. Why is this? |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Transferred: 15,000,000 bytes in 3 minutes 2 seconds (80.2 KB/s)
From germany ftp. Yesterday however I got 1.15mb/sec from creative over http, so clearly its variable depending which peer you go over and if http or not. Remember http downloads might well be of a proxy server so not external traffic. |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
went down AGAIN .. thats every day now the modem has just blacked out ... not happy.

To test the speed, I use http://www.irishisptest.com/myspeed/ during peak times the speed is slower by 1mb to 2mb. |

Something you have to understand.... some companies when it comes to peering etc, just get on with it, get it done and plan for the future. Others have departments that faff around with it all, juggling it between their various other responsibilities, and there's no front line access (the alledgedly engineers on both sides have no influence over peering at all, they only get to implement what they are told - nice to see with those salaries comes responsibility I don't think). Much smaller ISPs than ntl have more people dealing with peering. I could if requested set up a public peering session in a very short while, and have a couple of times harrassed certain other companies over peering interfaces getting towards congestion because congesting external links upsets customers on an even bigger scale than congesting internal or local ones. So it wouldn't surprise me if some links were still overpopulated, simply because no-one bothered to plan to upgrade them until they were nearly maxed, and because the upgrading was slightly more time consuming than expected or growth of traffic a bit quicker so the pipes are congested. Just talking from prior experience with certain companies. In short I don't know what the issues are, however I find the idea of peering being congested fairly easy to swallow as transit is much more looked after than PIs. Really if a PI is congested or public peering it should be shut down immediately to avoid service affect, however doing that instead of transit costs money, which makes you wonder why ntl's *public* peering policy was at least until fairly recently so completely anal / holier than thou. But yeah pretty much a lot of the belayed upgrade are probably due to bureaucracy, procrastination and over complication, 3 things ntl historically do well to make sure that the people who are best at these things can keep their jobs. Sorry if this affects your service, but *shrug* |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Well my speeds are all oevr the shop - my guess is saturated UBRs or something. Most of the time I was actually getting downloads faster from my 2mbit which is a bit cheaper :)
