My graphs minimum latency has just changed back to normal, after being higher for 18hrs.

I wonder if VM are trialling some new traffic management ????

I am looking forward to seeing what my monitor looks like with 8 downstream channels, and i hope it is better than what i have now.

Probably no change.. it's the upstream bonding im waiting for... that, and BT Infinty :D

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

Not a chance of BT Infinity in my village anytime soon but atleast i can get Virgin which is by far the better option or i would be stuck with ADSL Max.

Speaking of ADSL, anybody know of any TBB graphs showing the performance of VM National?

I'd be very worried if the new traffic management adds that kind of latency.

(They have said they will be using new traffic management, went silent on the idea, then mentioned it in passing again recently)

Double the capacity, but everyone gets double the speed and allowances.

I've always disagreed with the folk who say if you double someone's speed they'll use twice as much. But I guess we'll see...

I'd say there's room for both arguments. When i went from 10meg to 50 i downloaded more purely because i could. On 10meg i'd have to choose between either gaming or downloading, and i'd either spread it out or wait for off peak, now i can get the downloading done in a fraction of the time, and download more and then use the connection for something else, where as before i was either throttled or doing one or the other, or queuing files.

The lesser the bandwidth i'd argue that people would download more, but if you're going from 30 to 60, 50 to 100 id argue in the case that nothing much would change

Re: Think Broadband Ping Monitor Results (POST YOURS)

I'd agree with you there. There is often an increase, but it's far from linear, and often made up of things people could now do that previously couldn't, rather than more of the same. Last time I had any information on this I think it was around 20% more usage when you doubled someone's speed. There are exceptions of course, the day after I got my 50mb installed I downloaded at full speed for 24 hours straight just to try it. Managed to hit 500GB in one day.

The argument in the past was VM couldn't keep up with capacity upgrades because every time they'd add more capacity the users would suck all of it up immediately. That's only the case if bandwidth demand before the upgrade was already higher than what was provided after.

It was purely a stab in the dark but it wouldn't surprise me :)

The only time I would ever consider moving back to VM would be when they correctly sort out their traffic management to the point it has a positive impact on Jitter/Performance.

IMO VM need to do something pretty drastic reasonably soon or else they are in danger of blowing their toes off. When the new speed upgrades start rolling out in earnest I can see Jitter going skyward even further, what say you.
