Are you kidding ? - perhaps you should speak to bulldog, or the other ADSL suppliers (or even BT). You cannot get Bulldogs (or other companies) high speed ADSL/SDSL services outside of major cities, and I assure you it's not technical limitations. You cannot get any ADSL in some areas, again, the reasons are not technical.

Well for ADSL isp packages that rely on LLU then yes that is the same thing, but normal ADSL based on BT wholesale product is available everywhere thats ADSL enabled.

So ADSL (& SDSL) is a postcode lottery

Actually no, it depends if there's capacity in the exchange for you to be connected to the DSLAM.

Same as with ntl, subject to available capacity, difference to ntl being that with ntl you can't be too far from the exchange to receive the service.

A lot of legitimate online sites like itunes and tescos say they are going to start host movies to download. Now that there are going to be legitimate movie downloads, do you think the new company will have realistic caps to take into consideration movie downloads?

I think they will offer either a slightly more expensive uncapped service or a pay-as-you-use service beyond the cap.

Just because some people will want to legitimately use a large bandwidth should not mean that everybody else with broadband who do not should subsidise that bandwidth.

Does this happen very often though? Once the capacity of a DSLAM gets close to its limit, an additional DSLAM rack is put in the exchange. If there's congestion on the connections between exchanges doesn't this get upgraded too?

I read something in the paper about the new games consoles that are coming out (Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Revolution) and it mentioned about the facilities coming available that will let people download new games from the internet onto the console to play without having to go to a shop that sells them. This will definitely chew up some bandwidth and it'll be a full-speed jobby (i.e. using 100% of your available connection speed). What's gonna happen with this then? For Telewest people, that wont be a problem, but with the caps, it will be. As one company (for when NTL and TW merge), like people above have mentioned, they will need to make an unrestricted connection available OR make downloads from certain websites (like these game downloads for new consoles) exempt from the cap (should the merged company bring caps in for all levels).

They've been talking about doing this for nearly 20 years now.. To a certain extent it already happens (Half Life 2 was available for download via steam for instance), and there were services that did this before, but none have replaced the idea of going to a shop and buying a game.

Only if there's physical room in the exchange.

Perhaps these legitimate sites should pay the ISPs for using their bandwidth. You don't see Royal Mail offering free delivery for DVDs and music CDs.
