I wonder if the Swiss authorities were rather 'relaxed' about FIFA's suspicious dealings until the FBI became involved and they no longer could be.

Sepp Blatter says he has not resigned as Fifa president.

The 79-year-old Swiss was thought to have ended his 17-year reign on 2 June amid claims of corruption in world football's governing body.

But, according to Swiss newspaper Blick, Blatter told a party at a Fifa museum: "I did not resign. I put myself and my office in the hands of the Fifa congress."

Blatter is thought to be considering standing for re-election as president

Haha!

I mean, wow. Between him, Ecclestone and the fiascos at the IOC, the cycling authorities in recent years I have to ask if there's a secret game going on between them.

The game? Who can make the biggest mockery of international institutions and get away with it. The problem is of course that thanks to copious amounts of TV and sponsors money, these guys at the top of sports have been able to run amok with no semblance of corporate governance. Yes, we can all point faults with big corps, but being a PLC usually means the CEOs are accountable to someone. With this lot, Blatter and co think they aren't accountable to anyone, including their own words.

I hope the US authorities nail him once and for all.

Well if they can arrange a world cup tournament during summer in one of the world's hottest places, this is nothing...

Sepp Blatter is crying that he has had to bear all the responsibility for the actions of 'others' and that the crisis is not global, something about European circles only speaking of the presidential election.

"The popular outrage concerning FIFA in recent weeks has mainly been directed at me personally. I have no problem with this. I can defend myself," wrote Blatter in the column.

"However, I would appeal for fairness: I bear no responsibility for members of a government (the FIFA Executive Committee) I have not myself elected.

"The FIFA President must work with the people allotted him by the confederations. I therefore also bear no responsibility whatsoever for the behaviour of these ExCo members on their home turf," he added.

"Filling the office of President is ultimately only a sideshow, albeit staged in a glaring spotlight. I hope the Congress is not blinded by this, because FIFA’s future is at stake, no more and no less," wrote Blatter.

"In European circles there is only one topic: the presidential election.

"However, the reforms we have not yet been able to implement are in fact more important. This requires a clear statement of intent on the part of the Executive Committee and Congress.

"We need to change structures so they are above reproach," he added, repeating his call for independent integrity checks, the election of the executive by congress and term limits.

"To this day, the UEFA has no ethics committee, and the German association has no ethics committee," he noted.
