I guess streaming live TV and VOD are easy i would suspect that your Tivo is not actually involved in either of these two and the streams come direct from Virgin via your internet connection.

To stream what you have recorded would need direct access to your box and I suspect this is where things get complicated like needing your Tivo to be networked, I believe in the version that is being prepped for you only need to network your Tivo if you want to use the app as a remote.

It requires the TIVO stream to transcode the video for viewing on mobile devices I believe.

The TiVo has four hardware decoders but no encoding hardware, that's what the TiVo Stream is.

I remember having a Sky Mobile app on my N95 that was like a basic version of the current Sky+ iOS app, with an EPG and Remote Record.

Can't remember there ever being live or on-demand streaming on it, though... And if there was, it would have been a very limited selection of premium channels.

If Orange can offer Sky Sports streaming as part of their Panther tariffs, I'm sure Virgin will be able to as well

I guess all companies have had to change their offerings with the introduction of Youview , Netflix , Freesat etc.

Well everybody is entitled to their own opinion MM but it does not mean that the majority share the same opinion.:)

If its a long term win for Sky whilst Virgin Media are left undercutting themselves in order to retain business, doesn't that translate into a long term win for Virgin's customers who will see their costs going down?

I can't help but think that the piece on seenit is quite biased. They suggest that TiVo "lacking on a number of fronts" on the basis of a review they did over a year ago and before 2 major updates. The review includes such gems as the patently false "I delete these suggested episodes unwatched but still it records more. I want it to stop but there seems no way to make it."

As I understand it, VM sold their channels because they wanted to concentrate resources on what they considered their USP; fast fibre BB. That was fine when VM were the only option for fibre BB, but that is no longer the case.

Content has now becoming very important and VM don't have any. I was uneasy about it when VM sold off their channels and when they sold their stake in UK TV, and I think they have left themselves in a vunerable position, now only getting what Sky allow with regards to new content. To be fair, VM only had one channels's worth of content, but Sky did want that content and the Living branded channel.

I suspect the guy who wrote that article is a bit anti VM, but he's right in that Sky made a smart move launching Now TV and an even smarter move including it on Youview. He's also right that VM are at a dissadvantage in not owning content rights; BT have learnt that lesson and done something about it.

Virgin have loads of content. There are thousands of hours of stuff to watch on demand and they carry almost every channel anybody really wants, with the obvious exception.

I know now TV has been confirmed for the talk talk you view, but is there any word on the Bt one yet, or even when it will launch? Bt are falling behind even in terms of their own product!

To be fair to VM, most people will quickly find out that they will need a very fast broadband connection to run youview properly so it isn't loss loss, more like loss win.

But on demand is just repeats of previously broadcast shows. VM, at one time, had new shows, exclusive to their channels which were bargaining tools to get channels from other providers.

Yes, but the on demand platform means they don't need to have channels in order to have content.

When are we likely to see the Sky Atlantic shows then? Granted, a couple are being shown as second run on Living/One, but we have no guarantee of the rest.

We get what sky allows, as VM has no shows to 'trade' with them in exchange.

Re: Virgin TV Anywhere arriving in Autumn 2012

The streaming rights for a lot of those shows have been picked up by a third party in a deal that has absolutely nothing to do with Sky. Virgin's lack of channels doesn't stop them bidding for content, leverage with Sky has nothing to do with it.
