Pretty common turn of phrase - if you've never heard it I'd assume English isn't your first language :)

Re: 50 crap down to 3meg CAPPED
I have had 50Meg now for just over a month (Install date: 13th March 2009) and I too have been experiencing what appears to be a capped download speeds.Slowest being around 2Mbps.
This morning it appears to manifest itself slightly different, not only has Giganews been affected, but my entire connection... It is 5:43am, and have been downloading from Giganews (with SSL), was achieving 47Mbps (as per usual), and suddenly I noticed it drop violently down to 10Mbps... At this point I had downloaded around 1.4gb of data. So normally when this happens, I pause, wait ten minutes, resume and the speed goes back up... not this time. I tried Speedtest.net, and my previous result (which was 49Mbps) was now stating 10Mbps. I also tried downloading the ISO from ftp://debian.virginmedia.com/mirrors...md64-DVD-1.iso using Free Download Manager and that too doesn't want to transfer faster than 10Mbps on average. I am pretty confident that nothing else is downloading in the background. Windows update is turned off, I don't ever touch Torrents (only Giganews), and from what I can tell by looking at the data lights on the modem and router, no traffic is being transferred when I pause my download. Really kind of sucks. I am connected to the Seven Kings exchange (or so the Supervisor who came to upgrade my connection told me). |
Re: 50 crap down to 3meg CAPPED
sound like virgin lies to us all of non-stm on 50meg (but i think it had hidden stm) because i don't know why peoples reported 49Mbps and after 1Gb downloading then the speed drop down to 2Mbps (that's really interesting to know of why it kept doing this)

Re: 50 crap down to 3meg CAPPED
It looks like there is some kind of throttling on 50 meg. Maybe not the same STM as on the other speeds, but throttling non-the-less.
Virgin are a bunch of idiots. They launch 50 meg. Assuming they have more than two brain cells to rub together between them (I know, but stay with me), you would expect them to have anticipated that the early adopters of this rather expensive and allegedly "unlimited" service would be the kind of people who download a lot. An awful lot. All the time. Their attempt to generate good publicity by initially making the service un-retarded seems to have been a massive mis-calculation. Faced with this, they are forced to bring in throttling, generating bad publicity and loosing them money as people report faults, call out engineers, kill their modems to get them replaced and eventually end up getting their bills discounted or the whole thing (including install fees) refunded. |
Re: 50 crap down to 3meg CAPPED
testing on my 50mb with dif devices (not realy got around to debug but not happy with speed )
ok first test router WNR2000 is crap (ICS shareing provides Full download speed Dual gigabit port internet > my network > server 6.4MB/s Flat line) 2:33 all connections reset, speed droped to around 2-3mb/s ubuntu download unable to pass 2.5MB/s (20mb ISP) then started droping in and out down to 200KB/s, same for M$ download of SP1 for vista 2:55 speed come back, bit longer this time |

Re: 50 crap down to 3meg CAPPED
I'm getting this problem from time to time as well.
This morning, downloading from Astraweb at about 45Mb - 15 minutes into it, speed drops to about 5Mb. It took a reboot of modem and router to get it working again, so I guess my problem is with the NetGear router. Looks like I might have to get back my Dlink router and see if it is any better |
Re: 50 crap down to 3meg CAPPED
Well I will take my Netgear router out of the equation and see how that runs for a few days.
