"The contract to complete the work was awarded to the California-based engineering group Jacobs in June 2006 with a completion date of 2009. It then subcontracted to an Italian firm, IREM, after a tender process in which five UK and two European contractors responded. It is understood that the terms of the contract specified that IREM would be using its existing permanent Italian and Portuguese workforce for the job..... ......Total has said that there will be no direct redundancies as a result of this contract being awarded to IREM. It has also said that all IREM staff will be paid the same as the existing contractors working on the project. It is understood that there are 100 foreign workers on the new project, with a further 300 to come. But Total says that up to 1,000 workers, employed from the local community, have already been working on the project for 18 months." ---------- Post added at 18:04 ---------- Previous post was at 18:03 ---------- Quote:

there is a question mark over the legality of what they are doing, did you hear Derek Simpson on Radio 4's 'Today' programme? Mr Simpson said that the current strike at the Lindsey Oil Refinery was a result of a practice seen at other factories, whereby foreign contractors “exclude UK workers from considerationâ€, and questioned how they could afford to pay workers from abroad at fair rates, on top of transport and accommodation costs. “What’s happening at the Lindsey Refinery is the same situation that is occurring in two or three or more sites across Britain. The real question isn’t foreign workers – it is that these companies say they will not consider UK workers under any circumstances. “There is circumstantial evidence that some of the contractors are letting it be known that they have no intention of employing UK labour, even if a vacancy arises. This is absolutely outrageous, and potentially illegal. I suspect a lot of people have thoughts regarding this strike but imo this is basically the crux of it and under no circumstances should we accept it, I notice Total released a statement about this yeserday saying in future they would make sure everyone is given equal opportunities for vacancies, a good start, now I just hope that everyone concerned can negotiate to make sure this or anything like it never happens again. |
Re: Watch your job
When the European Union expanded member states were given the opportunity to put a limit on the number of foreign workers that they would allow in the country.
The Germans immediately put a maximum quota, our government however, did nothing. It's no good blaming businesses that are working totally within the confines of the law. You want to blame somebody? Blame the government. You want to change it? vote UKIP or some other party. |

I have sympathy for the workers who have not been even able to apply for the jobs because of cheap labour, is that ok ??? The fact is there are people who have not got jobs over this. This government had the opportunity to put temporary restrictions to our labour markets, they did not, thinking only a thousand or so would come through. Foreigners should only be considered if the job has been advertised here and other suitable candidates have not been found. 70,000 skilled workers have entered this country over the last 3 years, they have been able to do this even if they have no job to come to. Contracts to overseas companies operating here should be outlawed if they do not offer jobs to suitable workers here first. Brown was warned about the unrest we are now seeing, he chose to do nothing. So yes I have every sympathy for workers who were born here being done out of a job by a foreigner wanting to do that job for less money and under less safety standards. |

"It has also said that all IREM staff will be paid the same as the existing contractors working on the project." And they are covered by UK H&S laws, so your statement is a sub-optimal interpretation of the available information. ;) |
Re: Watch your job
No offence but if workers from abroad work better, for cheaper aka minimum wage then what's the problem. Im not saying British workers are all lazy, tea-drinking whores - but seriously; if you had your own business and you could choose to pay somebody £5 an hour compared to £10 for the same work, maybe even a bit better!, then why wouldn't you.
Obviously the British Workers have their 'standard' wage, but they have to understand that in the employers world, cheaper and better is the way up instead of homegrown labour which is poor. |

Re: Watch your job
I suggest members read the middle pages of The News of the World, and it was staggering to read it, and it was an Asian guy who runs the operation.
Where illegal immagrants line up for work outisde British companies for work, companies include B&Q, who are paying below average wages for the staff. This government has to stopped this, before it starts a lot of aggro, with British workers, who wants work. |
Re: Watch your job
Arthur the government doesn't care simple as that m8 i have phoned the number to report breaches of NMW so many times and not a thing has been done. They have had the benefit out of introducing the NMW i don't think they are interested in enforcing it at the minute or anytime soon as the recession hits.

How about a link instead, and let me keep what little pride I have left? Just searched, and found this - is that the article, Arthur? If so, you may want to be a bit more discreet, as the only mention of B&Q is that they queue up in the car park, not that B&Q hire them. |
Re: Watch your job
Hi Tailz, I have just read your comment, and although, we are all entitled to free speech, and your comments are noted, I would like to say something.
In this great country of ours, we are quite willing to work next to our neighbours from abroad, BUT, it has to be fair, and also the wages have to be fair, we know that employers will go lower and lower, than the average wage, and they will get away with it. But the Health and safety is very strict in this country, and the min wage is there to protect the worker. BUT also there are companies out there, who will go for foriegn workers, as they will take lower paid wages, and companies will then go 'underground' to get the staff, (as in NOTW), The British workers are the best in the world -and l will always support those workers, who are after better deal. It is like in todays other paper a new power station being built, is employing 650 foriegn worker, and there is already troulbe in the area of the Isle of Grain:) |
