Another question. Anyone know which modem we're likely to be sent so I can swat up?

Overclockers uk sell straight (Not crossover) cables from 99p for 1metre, 2.99 for 5 metres. Why take a chance on crossovers maybe working, maybe not?I know you have to add postage, but it isn't exactly expensive.
having said that, I've used crossovers to connect a router when it's all I had, and it worked.

From Argos' description:
Quote:

# For cable supplied broadband customers.
# Connect to your existing Ethernet modem and enable your computer to share your cable broadband internet access wirelessly.
# Maximum speed of 125Mbps.
I'd hazard a guess that it'll work perfectly.

Good luck, Dunno!

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Like many others, I received a letter from Virgin this morning announcing a free upgrade from 4MB to 10MB. A quick look at their website reveals that the "plans" for rollout are sketchy at best. Looking a bit further, the website tells me that my 3Com CMX modem (which has worked happily for more than 8 years and is rated at 40 Mbps) is no longer adequate. Hmmm.
So, they can't or won't tell us what is happening in as little as 10 days time, then they suggest that I spend money on an equipment upgrade which is probably not necessary. I find it very hard a) to feel reassured that they're in control of their business, and b) to believe that looking after my interests is near the top of their priority list.

The new equipment is sent to you free of charge if applicable.

Due to a quirk of history (I was a very early subscriber to the cable modem internet service), I actually own my modem. I'd quite like to keep it that way.

Indeed you can, but it won't do the faster speeds, you can still only use it on Virgin's network if you pay Virgin for a subscription, you probably don't get any discount for owning it etc ;)

This document (3Com CMX user guide) says:

Quote:

User data rates of up to 3000K,* faster than 56K analog modems, ISDN, or ADSL

Exactly what i have done.... my 20 mbit never achieved the speed and if you stop Filesharing and news grouping you absolutely do not need 20mbit.

If the government manage to get their way on illegal filesharing what is the point of highspeed internet for the average joe?

snip.

Your perfectly entitled to keep the brick, but you are very unlikely to get the speeds that you are paying for, and would still be charged full price.

I really just don't get it. We're about to get a free upgrade from 4mb to 10mb and we're not happy? I suppose we could always tell VM that we don't want the free extra speed thank you very much .

do all customers that are with VM get the same Router Regadless of which speed M L or XL they are on/?? because maybe the 2meg users or 4 might want to upgrade, saves them having to send out routers all the time? or am i mistaken?

For that price, id recommend a Linksys router, but that device should be fine.

One to note, prior models of revisions of that device have been known to be faulty (ive dealt with a few myself) So watch out.

A Linksys NON ADSL wireless router would be more beneficial.

Its a 'modem' they send out, the modems they send out are different with regards to what the tech has in his van along with exntl or extw areas.

New customers will get the latest uptodate modems.

Existing customers who REQUIRE an upgrade can request a new modem on the upgrade site.

Customers upgrading from STB broadband to Modem broadband will get the latest model of modem.

Ive had a Motorola SB5400i modem for 5 years in ex-telewest and im now on 20meg, which is amazing and ive never had a problem. Id hate to loose it, but i know ill need to for a docsis 3.

All 50meg customers will definately require a brand new modem.
