If it's not then NTL have some serious problems. Take a look at this and you tell me as this is what I got when downloading from Microsoft:

Rang NTL CS at 4pm, regarding upgrading to 10 meg from the current 2 meg I'm on now, was told that NTL officially launching the 10 meg service on 1st december.
Told to ring back on that day, and I can have it then.

Just tried this. It downloads a file and tries to flash your modem.

Did a reboot but I'm still on ntlhm120_ntl0001.cpr.

How long did you have to wait for your modems to get the new config file. I spoke to CS this morning who said that he had upgraded me, but still not getting 10mb, looked at my modem config, rebooted modem serveral times but nothing.
Should it have happened very straight away, its been 10hrs, i take it that its not going to happen now :(

Mine was upgraded before the CS rep finished the sentence telling me I was upgraded. :Yikes:

In my experience, NTL can give your modem the speed change config file WHILE YOURE ON THE PHONE!

Certainly after yesterdays CS cock up with me, this evening my modem was rebooting itself as I placed the phone down. Voila, 10mb.

Thats how quickly they can send the speed upgrade down the cable.

We are getting closer and closer to the launch date and I have no doubts NTL are working every day to tweak the network. I don't expect to get 1.14 every day, well not all the time anyway. Now I'm on 10mbit I'm quite happy to go with the flow while they sort the issues out.

I'll be interested to see what the consistant speeds are when they officially launch the product.

Server 2003
Without the Service Pack, PCI slots appear to be limited to 5Meg, presumably XP is similar.
Incidentally, on-board NIC's don't have this limitation.

Just in case you do a clean install and wonder where your connection speed went prior to you installing the Service Packs.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

modem here has been flashed with the firmware upgrade, but no sign of any drip-drip increase in speed (Ambit 120 here, had it since getting broadband 4 years ago). I guess that the speed roll-out will happen any time now. I, for one, won't be contacting CS for the speed upgrade (tried once, got nada).
Lets see.. it's only 11 days from the 1st Dec... lets see what happens then, thats surely going to be slightly more interesting..

The same with me. Just rang tech support and got a very helpfull man (who couldn't quite grasp what my problem was). Anyway after about 25 mins trying this and that he said "please hold while I speak to my superior to see if you need an engineers visit to change the modem". Great I though. He came back after a couple of minutes and asked who the accounts name was in, I said the wifes, and he said "I'm sorry but we need to speak to her to arrange an engineers visit" But she's not here I said "Sorry sir but you will have to get her to ring back when she gets in". Trust me to ring when she's having her hair done :(

Got our bill this morning and it says 10mb Broardband (75GB)

Ok have had my 10Mbit upgrade get around 5Mbit because I have the Surfboard 3100.
CS said I would receive a new modem when the service is officially rolled out, fair enough.

My Question is this.
Which modem will I receive do you think, will it be USB?
I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router, which is Ethernet; I donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t want to buy a new one, as this is only 2 weeks old.
Do they offer an Ethernet version?

Tanks in advance.

You would probably get the NTL: 250 modem, it has USB and ethernet as do all other NTL modems

So if this whole 10mb upgrade is a trial like most of the CS are saying... why would it show up on the customers bill? Obviously it's not a trial, CS mentioned it a few times when I tried to get it, but when I finally did, it was through retentions who didnt mention anything about it being a trial. So my opinion is that its the full blown release of 10mb which launched on the 8th like it says on the CF home page, and nearly all the NTL staff CS, TS, sales etc are misinformed. Not bad for a communications company! ;)

Just rang them back and got another very helpfull man. This one told me that because my modem wasn't registering any problems while he was on the line he couldn't book an engineer. Told him I'd rung 2 hours before and was told they couldn't book an engineer because my wife wasn't here. He insisted that the modem didn't apear to be faulty and he didn't know why I was told that. I insisted that it must be faulty to keep rebooting itself. He then put me on hold and when he came back asked to speak to my wife. After asking her the account password he asked to speak to me again and then put me back on hold. When he came back he said that he would put me on hold and the next person I spoke to would be someone from the engineers dept who would arrange a visit. Got one coming out Tuesday so hopefully it will be sorted. Watch this space lol

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

After speaking to CS yesterday and being told by someone that I could get the 10mb upgrade and he would do it right away but it would take upto 24hrs for the changes to take effect, i waited nearly 24hrs and nothing.

So I phoned CS back up today and spoke to someone else and explained that I was upgraded yesterday but my modem hasnt had the new config file sent to it. She looked into my account and said I was still on the 3mb service and 10mb hasnt been released yet but she would check why I was told yesterday that I could have it. 2mins later she came back to me and said 'Oh the 10mb option is there for me to setup, ill upgrade you now, I havent done this before but we will see what happens' ... 1min later my modem reset and im now on 10mb :)

Think it all depends on who you speak to in CS, most of them havent been told about the 10mb upgrade, but if they are willing to look into it for you then you should get the upgrade.

I've been told twice now and still nothing!!

I'm really ****ed off now becuase i've been on the highest package broadband since day 1. They get 37.99 a month off me, i expect the upgrade first.

I have created a new Speed Test (based on Robins) which uses a larger sample size - as the current one was never intended for such high speeds and can give odd results on some machines. I've also added a couple of bits for Mbps and average speed across the four tests. It can be accessed via the "New Speed Test" link in the navbar "Quick Links". Please test it out.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Nice one Paul...

This is what I got:

1st 512K took 641 ms = 817922 KB/sec, approx 6646 Kbps, 6.49 Mbps
2nd 512K took 640 ms = 819200 KB/sec, approx 6656 Kbps, 6.5 Mbps
3rd 512K took 641 ms = 817922 KB/sec, approx 6646 Kbps, 6.49 Mbps
4th 512K took 688 ms = 762047 KB/sec, approx 6192 Kbps, 6.05 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 6535 Kbps, 6.38 Mbps

I have a Ambit 100 modem and assume thatâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s why my performance is not better. I do hope NTL can do a firmware tweak - from a resource point of view it seems an enormous waste of money to have to replace modems that can, quite frankly reach very good speeds, but not enough to match the advertised maximum. In reality I would be quite happy with the current speed - but human nature dictates I will be asking for a replacement in due course!

Nice job Paul works for me :)

Sun, 20 Nov 2005 08:01:15 UTC

1st 512K took 296 ms = 1771243 KB/sec, approx 14391 Kbps, 14.05 Mbps
2nd 512K took 438 ms = 1197005 KB/sec, approx 9726 Kbps, 9.5 Mbps
3rd 512K took 452 ms = 1159929 KB/sec, approx 9424 Kbps, 9.2 Mbps
4th 512K took 406 ms = 1291350 KB/sec, approx 10492 Kbps, 10.25 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 11008 Kbps, 10.75 Mbps

This is probably the most invaluable forum I've encountered (and the first time that I have joined one). I also have the SB4100 through ethernet, of course, but still appear to have the 3mb service. Grimsby area has always been excellent for speed and connectivity and I have often seeen people suffer in other areas of the country while the service here has remained phenomenal. Probably only had 7 days downtime in 5 years.
However, once you do see a higher speed available, you want it.

You will not be on 10M unless you have requested it, and been told it's done - there is no automatic upgrade atm.

If you want to be pedantic, no, but then, they are using the evil version of megabits, which uses thousands instead of 1024s, well, almost, they did for the upload for 3meg, but It doesnt explain the 10240000, gah, *runs*

Finally secumbed out of curiostity, rang CS on friday to ask about speed upgrade.
Spoke to a nice friendly lass who said she would check, came back and said she could do it and could i hold for two minutes. Two minutes later she told me it was done.
Waited friday, waited saturday, rebooted modem a few times and checked modem config..............nothing changed.
Rang CS just now to explain.........Upgrade is not available to anyone til mid december.........Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Can anyone explain what I need to do to change the set top box to a CM? (I'm right in thinking the samsung stb cant do 10 meg?)

current situation is cable comes nto the house behind the TV, then an "extension" goes back outside, up the wall and into the bedroom to finish at an RJ45 socket, which I plug the router into.

Where will the CM sit? downstairs by the STB (wifey wont be pleased) or upstairs between the router and RJ45 socket?

Will there need to be any changes to the wiring?

Who installs the CM, NTL or me?

so many questions so little time :(

Anyone out there with a SB4100 getting full speed? If you are what firmware do you have?

http://www.unixmexico.org/~uncap/www.../Firmware.html

This site seems to have firmware images, but I dont advise using them....
Just out of interest it would be nice to know if ntl are using a standard firmware image that is 'readily' available on t'interweb.

As has been repeated dozens of times, there are no automatic upgrades atm.

From your description, it sounds like the extension upstairs is an extension of the ethernet, so the CM would need to go downstairs. However, you may be able to ask them to route some coax upstairs at the time they fit the CM. Obviously from that you can deduce that ntl fit it, not you.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Well I'm on 3MB service currently - i've called NTL CS 3 times now and they wont upgrade me to 10 mb though they say they have upgraded some people - all they will say is that it will be upgraded sometime between now and the end of the year though one rep said between Jan and april .

Can someone tell me which option they went through too when calling NTL - I've tried 3 and 5 now. Isn't there a broadband support number - can they do it?

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

it just depends who you get really
some flat out refuse to do it, some do it
the first time i rung, the guy said "no-one is allowed 10mbit yet, it's only a trial, you can't have it"
i rang back an hour later, different person said "sure, all done for you, reboot your modem and see if it worked", i did, and it did :D
