just before she hung up on the last call she said "hang on i just got an email apperently you can have 10 meg on a trial for £37.99 amonth "

im on a sacm ntl200 from manchester and the couple of speed test i have done so far are showing 5 meg down but its still 2 and half more then they were before

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

hmm done the upgrade without any probs from the update site but I only get the speeds of 3meg instead of 10 :( whilst my config says this:

Network Access : Enabled Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000 bps Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000 bps Maximum Number of CPEs : 1 Software Upgrade File Name : ntlhm120_ntl0001.cpr Software Upgrade AdminStatus : allowProvisioningUpgrade Software Upgrade OperStatus : completeFromProvisioning

whilst a speedtest gives me this:

Speed Test Results Download: 2,660,384 bps Upload: 384,392 bps QOS: 79% RTT: 12 ms MaxPause: 94 ms

oww well I think its not really ready in the Northamptonshire area then :( as I havent even seen anything on the ntl pages that this area upgraded at all :(

:notopic: nice skin, SoulLuna?

The speed test sites *may* be overloaded at the moment though with everyone testing thier speed to see if they have the upgrade...

PS Microsoft is overloaded due to the SQL Server 5.0 launch if anyone is using that as a benchmark btw...

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Thought I would throw my two penneth in.
Here is my speed test after a very nice lady upgraded me this afternoon

Downstream 4978 Kbps (622.3 KB/sec) 5376 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 492 Kbps (61.5 KB/sec) 531 Kbps (inc. overheads)

Spoke to support (very nice man) I guess in Swansea to try and increase the speed, we tried suspending/ re-enabling the modem, rebooting and changing the ethernet config on the cable modem but no joy.

In the end, left it as is. Hopefully will right itself over the next few weeks.

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Very disappointed with ntl re these 10mb rollouts.

Phoned CS and said I was on 3MB and asked to be upgraded to 10mb. Nice CS lady said her office had only been informed that new customers could get the 10mb at the moment. I said it was on various forums that cutomers on lower priced tiers could upgrade to 10MB, while I, as a 3MB customer, could not. She said this was incorrect, but I explained that many people had aready upgraded. I went on to say that I had been a loyal customer for 15 years and said that I was dissapointed that I was always last in the line for improvements. Ie Bromley upgrade, free ntl dialup (which never happened despite "original" ntl customers getting it) etc. She was sorry, but said there was nothing she could do to help me.

Its not fair that when you are loyal to a company be it a bank or in this case tv/broadband company, that high paying loyal customers are a low priority. Time to re-evalute staying with such companies that don't treat long standing customers with due respect. Might as well flit between diffrent companies and always get the best deals like most young folks do now. I'm a slow learner, but the lesson is now well and truly learnt that loyality now has no value, bit like in the whole of society as a whole.

Been doing some more testing from lots of sites and I'm only really getting 4mbps speeds. Bit of an anti-climax https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2005/11/7.gif Guess I need to persuade some neighbours to swap to ADSL

Thats good, I'm envious, when you get it. But the office I got through to said they couldn't do anything. I was polite and they was polite, but I can't force ntl cs to do something which they say isn't possible. I'm looking at moving to bee, I won't get 24mb but I might get around 10mb if the bt lines in the area are good enough. Next is change of bank..Same thing, been with HSBC for years, but do I get the best interest rates like new customers, like hell. Just the way the world is now....

Re: *All* ntl 10meg Discussion (part 2)

Well, curiousity finally got the better of me. I called NTL CS just prior to 8pm and rather coyly asked about the 10MBit service, explaining I'd heard that others had received the upgrade through various means.

The guy (yes, he was Scottish although I am too) said that he could process it for me just now but couldn't guarantee that it would "go through". He said that I might get the 10Mbit speeds after rebooting but that ultimately, I could still remain on 3MBit tonight. He also stated that he had been bombarded with many angry callers demanding to be put onto 10MBit and he hadn't done it for them! He said that it was nice to finally deal with a polite enquiry about the upgrade and he had no problems trying it out for me.

So after rebooting and crossing every crossable part of my body, I checked my speed. I am faster although the speeds I am getting measure between a 4MBit and 5MBit connection.

I have one of the old Terayon Terajet modems (model number 210) and I'm connected via USB. Is there anything I can do to improve my speed or is my area (Paisley/Renfrew) just not up to full 10MBit par yet?

That could well be the case. I'm not too worried as I know that it's extremely early days for the upgrade. I'll monitor the connection and see how it goes.

EDIT: If anyone does contact CS tomorrow to request the upgrade, DON'T LOSE YOUR TEMPER! The CS people are already mightily pi**ed off about this so losing the rag with them will make them even more hostile.

Yeah - even the UK has to become like the rest of the World at some point and have 'up to' speeds. But, still, the upload speed is five times what some of us are getting! :)

I always got 3mb (374k) on my old connection. Now i'm getting about 2.67mb on speed tests. The guy said to phone back if there were any problems, but i'm guessing there might be a bit of network rebalancing tonight, if everyone is phoning up for 3mb or being upgraded automatically, i'm sure the network is just getting used to it. Upload speed is great though!

I'll be gutted if the Samsung STB's wont have the upgrade. Only for the fact that I've had trouble before with other STB's and SACM's and the thought of fixing something that isn't broke after a year and a half of zero problems worries me. Cant be bothered with the hassle of engineers changing lines and reinstalling something I dont much want. Plus, TBH, I dont want the 10Mb down, just the added upload will do me. I'm perfectly happy chugging along at 380kbps Down, which I get at the minute.

Everything is a bit PopStars at the minute though.(Hear'say) So we (STB user's) shall all have to wait and see what the 10Mb future holds for us.

As for moving on to another ISP. LMAO. Go back to crappy ADSL after having Cable. NEVER!

Exactly, its a "Up to" service, just like Bulldog and UKOnline, nothing wrong with that, and frankly, whats wrong with 5 meg, if I can expect that, or more during quiet times, I will be happy as Larry, I mean come on, Last year, I was on 1Meg for £34.99P M, now, up to 10Meg for £37.99, thats a good year, think about it.

I'm well aware that I can expect up to 10Mbit and that a constant 10Mbit cannot be expected. I was just wondering about my modem specs and whether my modem could be holding me back. Getting less that 10Mbit doesn't bother me now; as I said before this is all very new and no doubt some glitches will need to be ironed out/dealt with.

There seems to be quite a lot of people reporting speeds of 4-5mbs, Is there by any chance an issue with pc's not been fast enough. I remember having a pc and getting a rock steady 3-4Kbs on dial up then upgrading my pc and getting 5-6Kbs. Also not many people will have looked at the settings for their ethernet cards duplex/half duplex etc. Also there could be issues with speeds for those using usb 1.0 modems/pcs.

Lets not all ju p on and assume its ntl because there are people here getting the correct speed through.

Unable to upgrade your connection speed We are sorry that your current package or connection speed is not appropriate for an online speed upgrade. Please call customer support on 0800 052 2000 for further assistance with changing your service level.

or are people on 1 & 2 Mb getting it as well

Without trying to attract the wrath of the "omg they get a free upgrade and they still moan" gang, I'm can't say I'm too impressed the speed is all over the place and at times slower than my old 2mbit connection. Hopefully it's just because people are testing out their new speed and it will calm down a bit, at least I hope so...

That may be part of the problem. I also reckon that many people will need to upgrade their modems and possibly even their PCs to be able to handle the increased speeds. Still, I've technically got a 10Mbit connection! :D

A Full Speed rate of 12 Mbit/s (1.4 MiB/s). Full Speed was the fastest rate before the USB 2.0 specification and many devices fall back to Full Speed. Full Speed devices divide the USB bandwidth between them in a first-come first-served basis and it is not uncommon to run out of bandwidth with several isochronous devices. All USB Hubs support Full Speed.

Taken from Wikipedia, so if youre using USB for your Modem and not getting full speeds, each USB hub on your system has 12MBit shared between the ports so perhaps try changing the port your Modem is plugged into to one that is next to an empty one or next to a low bandwidth consumption one such as a mouse.

Transferring data to this pc (celeron 400 with 200mb ram and xp) caused it to bang straight to 95-100% cpu usage. :-)

That pc had a 10mbs lan card in it mind not sure what duplex it was.

As a bench mark i can normall get a similar file transfer speed over 11mbs wireless.

But she slogs along and has not died yet, she's fine looking after my pron stash and back-ups

Last time i was on the 1.5mb package (the highest package) when i went to the upgreade page I had the option of 2, and 3mb. I went the 3mb route but several months later went down to the 2mb package,

This time 3mb users, me included, becasue I upgraded to 3mb with the hype to get 10mb FIRST,

3mb users do not seem to have the option to upgrade,
it seems as though there are several errors and no one has been sucessful to upgrade from 3mb to 10 via the web portel.

I phoned CS this morning and asked for my connection to be dropped from 3mb to 2mb ...as it seemed from this site that the 2mb users had the option to upgrade,

I tried again.. and im on 2mb at this point, the only option on the webportel is 10mb you do not have the option for 3mb, even though im on 2 and 3mb is suppose to be the high tier.
Anyway I click 10mb and it fails!!
ring the CS etc etc...

I rang them and they can only put me on 3mb, WTF?

My neighbour came round this evening and we were chatting, I told him the situation about NTL, and he would love 10mb if he can get it,
So we went round his house (2 doors away) and tried the web portel and 10mb upgrade straight away..he's been on 2mb for the last 8 months or so..

OMG
if you were on 2mb yesterday you can get 10mb via the portel otherwise you have to run the gauntlet with 0800-052-2000 option 2.

I have been un-succesful today but am cheased my neighbour but one has 10mb and i dont,..

even though i was on the higher package.

I dont get the 10mb option when I try via the web portel , but as NTL will make money out of my neighbour he gets advantage.

Honest guv'nors, I'm been meaning to switch to ethernet for ages as I know how USB can impact on resources. Laziness has been the key factor in my sticking with USB - I kept thinking "I'll buy and fit a card tomorrow." Of course, I never did get around to it. Good point. As usual, ntl have failed to communicate adequately. If they had clearly defined the trial areas, then there wouldn't be any confusion about who could get the upgrade and who couldn't until December.

This would in turn lead to lower call volumes to their contact centres as customers wouldn't be phoning in to query the rollout.

And also as usual, there is confusion internally about who can get the upgrade. Phoning multiple times results in multiple answers and higher call volumes, which would again have been avoided by better internal communications.

We live in hope.

thanks to whoever mentioned the optimizer from speedguide (forgot about it) :

Tue, 8 Nov 2005 22:39:20 UTC
1st 128K took 125 ms = 1048576 Bytes/sec = approx 8724 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 125 ms = 1048576 Bytes/sec = approx 8724 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 125 ms = 1048576 Bytes/sec = approx 8724 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 141 ms = 929589 Bytes/sec = approx 7734 kbits/sec

better than 5mbit, i suggest you guys give it a try, those of you who are getting low amounts.

I agree with you mate. But it's life. You cant always get what you want and when you do, it aint up to expectations most of the time. Tomorrow will probably bring you more success.

In defence of NTL though. Fair enough, they make a few mistakes with these upgrades and the way they do things, but eventually, it gets done, as promised and 99.7% of it's customers are happy. Just a few with alot bigger troubles than something they are given for free not turning up.

There's not even been an official statement to say that the 10Mb upgrades will start as of today. (8th Nov) It's all really much a do about nothing because at the end of the day, we are all paying for what we signed up for. I pay £37.99 p/m for my 3Mb connection the same as everybody else. I cant argue because someone else has a 10Mb connection paying the same because I chose to pay £37.99 p/m for a 3Mb connection.

Nowhere did it say that if you upgrade to 3Mb BB you will be upgraded to 10Mb the same day as everybody else.

People really need to take a chill pill on this. Cuz getting worked up on here, will make you irate. Then when you phone CS asking for an upgrade in an irate attitude, you'll get nowhere. Believe me, I used to worked for an ISP CS, and if people were all arsy, they got nothing. Because that person you need to be polite to over the phone holds the key and you have nothing. ;)

Thats my opinion anyway.

People can compare the situation to buying cars or bags of sweets or bags of ****e if they like. Makes no odds what-so-ever. You pay for what you asked for when you agreed to that package. If NTL dropped you down and still charged you, fair enough. But on something that isn't widespread and not fully functional anywhere as of yet......LMAO.

Cheers

She said this was incorrect, but I explained that many people had aready upgraded. I went on to say that I had been a loyal customer for 15 years and said that I was dissapointed that I was always last in the line for improvements. Ie Bromley upgrade, free ntl dialup (which never happened despite "original" ntl customers getting it) etc. She was sorry, but said there was nothing she could do to help me.

If you want the upgrade today and live in a trial area then perhaps you should call back. I would also strongly question whether ntl are allowed to sell the 10Mbps service to new customers and not provide it to you, provided it is available in your area. Of course, if it is not available in your area at all, then you just have to wait as it's staggered rollout, which is quite normal.

Exactly, so people shouldn't expect to be upgraded automatically.

However, if ntl are selling 10Mb to new customers in your area and it is technically available to you, then you should be able to get it. Otherwise that is discriminating against existing customers.

Here are some answers for ya.

1) Some areas have it, some don't!!, WHY, because its nationwide cock up thats why m8, :(.

2) And the ones that do, have random results, Wales 4-5mb, Manchester up to 9mb, Hertfordshire 6-8mb. (how can this possibly be the final package.). These sound more like testing to me. Imagine how it would have gone last year when they did the last rollout that those that paid for 3mb like me for £37,99, were getting 1mb to 2mb depending on which area you lived in, Outrageous. But it wasnt like that, Not for me anyway, it's always been spot on 3mbit and never faulted for all these months.

3) If This really was the rollout and I were getting say 5mb I would be Extremley , Imagine paying Sky TV £70 per month for all the channels on a new package release , then they turn around and say that only those in certain areas will get the movies, and other areas will only get the sports until next month maybe next year,How could you possibly say that you wouldn't moan about that.

4) I spoke to CS today, and they told me Dec at the latest for the REAL deal for Everyone.

5) Just a personal note this one really, but why ,why, the hell do those that have been given the genuine 10mb connection, (although I have not actually seen proof of a constant 1.2mb per sec download as of yet for a long duration.) Do those peeps come back on here and deliberatly try to enrage those that cant have it yet. I joined because i wanted to find out more about what's going on with NTL. Not stumble into some Schoolground boasting match. If I had the 10mb Connection I would be USING it not wasting time here trying to upset people.or at least thats the way it seems.

6) And fnally, Thanks NTL, yes, Thanks for your consideration to us customers who stuck with you on the so called Platinum service of 3mb, And how you really made us feel different subscribing to your most expense broadband service by Shafting us up the anus with your fibre optic cable, when loyalty was concerned.

7) And how impressive your non existent advertising on national TV is for launching this service in competiton with wanadoo and bulldog, etc.....

8) But at least I'm still subscribed to your non existent NTL Power users forum. which I have not had a newsletter from since it was launched way back in the first quarter of last year.

Frank: Thanks for the feedback.

The point I was trying to make is that ntl HAVE launched the 10mb product. They are offering it to ALL new customers in ALL areas (according to the cs lady I spoke to) and of course those on lower tiers can upgrade too. This is NOT a trial, it is a full rollout. But ntl's bosses have just made a complete balls-up of it. My sympathies goes out to the ntl cs people taking unnecessary or multiple calls from us customers trying to upgrade. I been in the position myself where my company informed staff of one thing, yet the reality was completey diffrent.

No, it's a staggered rollout, which is normal for all large scale IT projects like this. A nationwide cockup would be ntl's customer service and internal communication on the matter, not the rollout.

It's NOT something for nothing. NTL are rolling out 10 meg because they have to, to stay competitive. If they did nothing we'd all be off to the 8 meg ADSL services that are stonking value for money.

Many customers - myself included have stayed with NTL because of the promise of upgraded speeds - their inability to communicate a simple fact like when this may happen is indicative of their lack of customer service skills, their lack of basic marketing skills and a woeful disregard for the plight of those of us that are paying £38 a month for a service that just doesn't stack up against the competition currently.

I am in manchester and they said it was new customers only mate.

But ntl's bosses have just made a complete balls-up of it. My sympathies goes out to the ntl cs people taking unnecessary or multiple calls from us customers trying to upgrade. I think the "according to the cs lady I spoke to" is the key part here ;) If it had been launched, ntl would be selling it right now on their website and there would be press releases and media promotion.
