Re: Season 2017/2018

Graeme Souness on his time at Newcastle:

Quote:

I made a mistake when Alan Shearer was going to chuck it by persuading him to play on and give me another year because I felt he was good in the dressing room. In doing so we only ended up getting Michael Owen in during the summer when, in reality, we needed two strikers. Alan was on his last legs and if he hadn’t stayed on we would have ended up getting the two we needed.

“Initially I’d wanted to sign Nicolas Anelka. I’d had a meeting with his brother
Quote:

“It had got to about 10.30pm and I was about to leave when they suddenly said ‘Before you go, have a look at these’. (Football agent) Paul Stretford came in with a pile of CVs and said ‘What about one of these?’

“He handed about 50 pages of players who were top scorers in all the leagues in Europe. ‘Pick one of them,’ he said. Unbelievable. Less than 48 hours before the transfer deadline, I was being asked to pick a player who I had never seen play, because he had a track record of scoring goals and because they thought they were not getting Michael.

“I just said ‘I’m going home’. Dean Saunders lived opposite me and at about 1am, he was throwing stones at my window to wake me up – I had turned my mobile off by this point – to tell me Michael had phoned and said he was coming to Newcastle United after all
Quote:

I’d watch a game at night, come in and have my breakfast with my staff at the training ground and I would say a throwaway line like, ‘Did you see the game last night, such and such played really well.’ That was all I said, but on three or four occasions Kenny Shepherd would come back to me and say, ‘We’ve spoken to his agent, he’d love to join us.’
A pretty damning insight to the way to the club was being run under the late Shepherd, an absolute willingness to throw money at anyone and anything to keep the club relevant whilst knowingly racking up club ending debt. £150m to be exact for a club that was rapidly fading away from the top four, then removing itself from any form of European spot all together. £150m now is a drop in the pond but back then it was a debt that left Newcastle 3 weeks away from doing Portsmouth before they did it. I think Shepherd would have borrowed from elsewhere again though and just added more debt to keep us afloat.

Stretford being the bloke portions of united fans hate? because he's your best mate but he's touting the same player behind your back to someone else (See Rooney to Man United and his involvement in getting another club - Newcastle to basically drive up the price and sweeten his payment in the end) The bloke literally had an office at St James' with Freddie's son. I still believe the above is true, I don't think there was ever a question of where Rooney was going, it was always United and Stretford and co were all in on Newcastle essentially making shill offers.

I think someone translated it wrong as the initial reports of him being released have now changed to indefinitely suspended. Being released is probably coming though as he'll get a ban that will likely be longer than what remains of his contract anyway as it runs out at the end of the season, he'll be 37 by then.

As a comparison Cantona basically did the same thing as Pat and was banned from all football for 9 months and done for assault in court, got a nothing sentence for it mind you but still.

The logic in appointing a man that was tasked with avoiding relegation with Sunderland and failing pretty awfully to then get another club out of relegation.

Meanwhile Amanda Staveley's group expect to move into the final third of the Newcastle takeover in the new few weeks, meaning the club should be sold by Christmas. :)

I'm pretty indifferent to him tbh I do think he's been much maligned by people jumping on a band wagon over nothing though

Jim is probably quite well qualified to offer his opinion on David Moyes so it would be interesting to hear his thoughts on him.

Re: Season 2017/2018

I take David Moyes in the round, he was good at Preston and very good for Everton.
The United job slightly overwhelmed him but he did inherit a team that was going nowhere fast and needed major surgery to turn things around.

He wasn’t helped by the people around him at OT, especially Woodward who was very green at the time but has improved since.

The record of English managers abroad is mixed to say the least and I doubt that even Big Sam would have been able to keep Sunderland up last time.

He has enough time to turn things around and I for one wish him well.

He didn't get the support at utd perhaps it was partly his own fault, he spent to long trying to get bale. Was he really that bad in Spain, I heard he took over when they were 15th and finished of in 12th, what were they expecting exactly and he beat Barcelona there. Sunderland was a job he should never have taken, no one should have, fat Sam got lucky with kone and kircoff in his first window he wouldn't have kept them up 2nd time round, that said big Sam was my first choice to take over, apparently he wanted 8 million a season though

The Swiss should be thrown out for providing a pitch in that state for a major game. :(

Oops thank you for correcting me Jim but the same sentiment still applies sadly as you say.

Flurries of reports that Newcastle United have in fact been taken over by Amanda Staveley's PCP group, launching them into the footballing ultra rich :D

It's expected full confirmation will come this week, but the era of Ashley is over!! :woot::woot:

If that is the case Adzii then praise be to god that Newcastle and Ashley have finally gone their separate ways.

Not sure I'd like to see Fernando Torres though. Currently linked with Newcastle and Southampton. Not sure either set of fans would be that keen on it.

Everyone's dog knew the takeover deal was done though, we just wanted it over with for Christmas and to finally wave off Mike Ashley.

Ashley gets a bad press imo, if the takeover goes ahead the Geordies may well find they've sold their soul, just like the hammers and for every man city or Chelsea there's a Birmingham with the owner in jail

The Italian football press will be in frenzied hysterical mode this morning as if one thinks England get it in the neck that is a tea party compared to what is coming there this morning.:D

United win at OT predicted. I can't see much else, Mourinho can't afford to lose or draw this to be honest.

Can do nothing but shrug really, just gotta do the best we can until January and hope our budget reads £150-£200m and not £10m :D

In the press conference earlier Jose said Pogba, Zlatan and Rojo are all in the squad for Saturday too. Perfect timing for the crazy amount of games coming up.

It might be a few matches though before they are fully match fit so l think he will do it gently gently with them..

I can't see Zlatan starting until one of the cup games, maybe the CSKA one in a couple of weeks but rumours floating around this morning that Pogba and Rojo will start today. Soon find out i suppose.
