If adding AMC would cost the same to VM as adding one of the channels you mention (Home, Shed, CBS Reality, Quest, Home and Health, etc.) then you would have a very good point. But because AMC is a premium channel, it will cost VM a heck of a lot more than the channels that you mention.

But because at the moment it is mainly showing repeats, many of which are available elsewhere, it is not worth it's premium cost.

Your Amazon Prime and Netflix subscriptions are currently giving you way more current AMC shows than you'd get if VM added AMC.
  • Into the Badlands Amazon Prime
  • Turn Amazon Prime
  • Halt and Catch Fire Amazon Prime
  • Better Call Saul Netflix
Adding Now TV also gives people a fifth one, the Walking dead

I know that AMC in America is a premium channel, but is it also the case in the UK? Do BT subscribers have to pay an additional amount to get the channel or is it part of a bundle of channels?

It is a part of the BT Sports package

BT would have had to pay AMC a premium price to AMC, just as Sky had to pay a premium price to HBO.

How BT and Sky pass it on to their customers is their decision. BT and Sky have spent large amounts of money on premium TV channels in order to attract customers. Why would they then sell them to VM for the price of a non premium channel?

I sincerely mean no offence, but that statement means that you don't get it.

BT, to encourage people to join their service, add a premium channel to there TV service at No extra cost. That's what a loss leader is; something worth more added at a lower price to attract people to your service.

To obtain AMC on Sky, you have to subscribe to a BT premium package.

If it is a basic channel, why is it not included on VM as part of the BT sport deal?

SA's value is in the premium HBO content. Although premium content, Sky offer their customers that content as basic content, purely to attract users to Sky.

BT have tried to copy Sky's method by signing an excusive deal with a different premium cable network, AMC, in order to attract customers to BT's TV Services.

Both HBO and AMC are premium content providers that BT and Sky are using to attract customers to their respective services by including premium content but not making it chargeable at a premium rate.

Not heard anything here either about motors tv closing but it does make one wonder if they will be here in the near future after leaving sky and freeview but they are still on freeview iptv, maybe they are planning to be a iptv. vm and freesat exclusive?

It can't go onto Freesat until it drops the FTV encryption. It started life as FTA, then had to scramble after joining the Sky platform. About 5 years ago Sky kicked them out, but curiously, instead of going back to FTA, they went FTV and have done ever since.

Maybe there are now rights issues, but that can be resolved these days by taking them off the Pan European beam, dropping the encryption and putting it on a UK Spot Beam transponder.

It would be a good addition to Freesat as I don't think it has any dedicated Sports channels.

You may well be right MB, since making that post, I've been told that Motors TV also transmits a distribution feed on the Eutelsat 9A satellite.

I can't imagine them staying on Astra just for Freesat though, it wouldn't be feasible to not be on the Sky EPG and miss the potential reach of most homes.

The only time I've ever known a channel to launch exclusively on Freesat was a film channel (can't remember it's name). This didn't last long and when they joined the Sky EPG, their viewers massively increased.

Of the remaining two, I guess there may be a minor demand for Ginx, but the less said about ITVBe in HD the better :D

Just found out that the BBC are developing a radio app for Smart TV's, with the eventual aim of this replacing the EPG radio services on satellite and Freeview.

Cable wasn't specifically mentioned, but I imagine that in the long term VM might go down the same route.

This will obviously be for TiVo customers only, but that might mean everybody by then!

Would this bother people?

They always tended to move channels down to M if they went onto Freeview as TV M was introduced to compete with Freeview.

In recent years, it looked like they had moved away from trying to compete with Freeview and had effectively kicked TV M into the long grass, so it will be interesting to see if this goes ahead.

I saw the start, the camera panned towards a building which had a VirginMedia logo above the door next to another logo, maybe TV3?

The aspect ratio was squashed into a 4:3 square.
The female presenter mention the show was being broadcast in the UK via the VirginMedia platform. I switched over shortly after.

I did'nt see the end, but apparently the feed was cut off at 9pm, I think the show had been extended whilst on air, as I've read, someone was speaking and mid sentence when the feed was turned off.

I wasn't around long enough to see any adverts.

I must of set this to record on another box, flicked through the programme, they did indeed show adverts, Goodfellas pizza 'Made in Ireland', Aerial Tablets, (different ad to UK) and one for VirginMedia, with Richard Branson driving a VM truck, (like the Coca-Cola truck) advertising 340Mbps BB for 30 Euro.

Also showed trailers for upcoming shows.

The programme went out on a broadcast stream (ch996), so it was available to all customers.

Oh right! LG said that they were going to do it via the use of an app that they could turn on & off whenever they needed to. Must have changed their minds.

Do you know what 996 was showing before 7pm and after 9pm?

Edit: Could somebody with a non TiVo box please check if BBC1 HD, BBC2 HD, ITV3 HD, C4 HD and C5 HD are encrypted or not?

To check, you can just take out your smart card and see if the picture remains.

Much obliged :)

VM keep changing the goal posts. When the upgrade was announced,it said I would get it in December 2015. Then it changed to January 2016,now it says between July-December 2016.

I did a post code search using my neighbours door number (who have Sky) and it said that Vivid 200 is available in my area!

I agree I was perfectly happy with 20/30 before upgrade to 150mb

is there any examples where this a need for that speed other than faster download? it sounds like streaming is perfectly happy with the lower amount

I agree the slower speed is adequate for most.
For me, having a possibility (though not in reality) of 4 people all streaming at the same time means we have plenty of bandwidth available for my two webcams as well.

Agree that my 200mb is probably overkill, but then thats the snob in me !

Not at the moment possibly when UHD becomes more widely available and people start to stream UHD content on multiple devices the extra speed will be needed, as things stand me personally i'm quite happy with just HD content, bt do contact me every now and again asking if i want 78mbs i politely decline lol.

Netflix say you need a 25mb connection however it actually uses around 15Mb in my experience. I suppose the 25mb is to allow for a smooth streaming experience.

Well I spoke with Virgin about slow sluggish Apps like YouTube, Netflix and BBC Iplayer , boxes running very slow, issues with menus. I have been told first of all they don't deal with app issues as they are third party, the tech guys said they aware of all TiVo issues and say there is nothing they can do at this time to resolve issue. I raised it as a complaint as been told to accept this type of service is not right

Yes they are encrypted, CH5 HD is Only available on pay tv remember.
The only channels that are not encrypted are sd channels 1 - 5, a couple of sd kids channels and challenge (for some bizarre reason).

Thanks, Channel 5 HD looks to be making technical changes to go FTA on satellite.

It looks like it will also be joining Freeview, taking the former BBC3 capacity.

Yes it did. There is a post on digi spy which has a statement in French. The key bit of information is that they were planning on pulling the channel from all providers that were not paying them for the privilege. Its looks like they have been doing this and is why the channel suddenly went off Sky.

I am guessing they worked a deal out with Sky with regards to EPG fees. I know they were once in a Sky package which resulted in lower EPG fees but went FTV meaning they would have to pay the full cost. I wonder if Sky have agreed to let them pay the lower amount again hence the sudden unexpected return.

I think that's probably what happened too.

They couldn't reduce the price of the EPG fees, due to the FRND rules, but they can do things to get around things like help with uplinking or letting channels onto their own transponders.

Asked a few sources about a now tv app possibly arriving on tivo as a poster has been mentioning they thnk now tv will arrive on tivo, all the sources have indicated both vm and sky have absolutely no interest in launching nowtv on the current or upcoming tivos, it would not be in VMs best interest to have nowtv on the platform.

Could MovieMix remain on Channel 32 on Freeview with More than Movies closing on Sky and Freesat? It's likely that MovieMix performs relatively better on Freeview as it has less competition from other film channels.
I wonder if this channel launch (True Crime) will now ensure VM soon gets the True channels?

The deal can't have too long to go.

Virgin Media last signed an deal with CSC Media (as far as we know) in March 2011.

Sony TV UK (Sony Channel) was launched on Virgin Media on December 15th 2011.

Sony have a track record of moving channels around on Freeview and on Sky for that matter. I wouldn't like to predict what they will do in this case. I wouldn't be surprised if True Crime only popped up on the G. Manchester mini-multiplex at first. It would be rather odd to only launch in Manchester after the press release declaring that the channel is coming to Freeview, but stranger things have happened.

True Crime doesn't strike me has a "must have" channel. With content such as Dog the Bounty Hunter, I think I'll give it a miss.
