I watched it for the first 20 minuits and gave up. Seems the Telegraph and others seem to agree

It was one of the BBC’s biggest earners, pulling in £50 million a year and drawing the largest regular global audience for a show of its kind.

So bringing back Top Gear without hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond was always going to be a gamble and when it returned last night it seems producers may have been off track, as the relaunched show was widely criticised on social media.

One viewer called Lee tweeted: “Literally the first time @BBC_TopGear has bored me! So sad, great way to kill an amazing show.”

To be fair to the BBC they didn't 'kill the show'. Let's not forget Clarkson assaulted a co-worker. It's not like they had a choice.

Correct but they had the chance to update it and it seems they have not done that. I now await the other show on amazon to see how that is rated.

On a personal note glad to see my assessment of Evans needs no change :)

You seem to need it to fail, really badly. Are you going to tell us what Chris Evans did to you?

Meanwhile, the Telegraph's TV critic actually gave it 4/5. The article you linked to is their report on the "Twitter reaction". Surely by now everyone knows the last thing you read if you want a balanced view of public opinion is anything with the word Twitter in the title.

You can't really revue based on one episode ,if we did that then the original show would not have lasted past the first season .Hammond only just made it to the second season and May was rubbish when he started .

Watch it I did. First impressions? Matt Leblanc appears to have the passion for cars of all kinds that the original 3 have and I think a good top gear presenter needs. Evans did not, only seeming to find the muscle and super cars interesting. Sabine Schmidtz could have been interesting but wasn't in it much.

It was an OK start, but I think it needs a lot of work, and based on last night's show, I am not sure Chris Evans is the best man for the job.
I do think he is good on radio, and an OK TV presenter, but he did not do a good job last night.

Absolutely beyond awful..........

I lasted 30 minutes before deleting the series link.

The only things changed were the presenters, Evans is still an irritating twit, Leblanc seems a complete dud and Shmitt was almost nowhere to be seen.

The original show was almost dead on it's feet. just living on the wit and interplay between Clarkson and Co. By just substituting the presenters without re-booting the show the Beeb are left with a Corpse and 3 Duds.

What they've tried to do is copy (albeit tweaked slightly) the format but without the chemistry between the original presenters and that's why, IMHO, it didn't work. They'd have done better to come up with something new and fresh, ditching what went before. TG was due a major revamp and if the Beeb was going to remove JC (and his chums) they should have taken the opportunity to do so. I won't be watching episode 2.

I knew it was gonna be a dud with Kris evans at the helm. Apart from hosting the Big Breakfast hes mainly known for radio work now.

His appearance and attitude and just the general package he is that is offered up to us by the BBC just doesnt work. It would have been better if they just put someone on there that didnt know anything about cars and rambled atleast it would be funny to watch.

If they ditch Evans i wonder who they will bring in?

Chris Evans was well known for TFI Friday and Don't forget your toothbrush as well back in the 90s. I've never found him annoying but then I don't mind James Cordon either.

Re: [Updated] New BBC Top Gear trailer released

Mr Evans' has a voice like that little rattle in your car that you can't quite find to fix. Sort of just on the edge of hearing but definitely there. And only there above 30mph so you can't find it when stationary.

They tried to emulate the previous too much without the chemistry that made the previous work.

And now extending the "star in a car" seems to break the original idea where some stars are used to driving and have fabulous motors to put them in something "Joe public" can afford makes it more interesting. To give them a rally stage is not something "Joe public" will normally encounter.

But it's Mr Evans' voice.

Not having a conversation with myself here, but trying to make the point a bit more clearly.

I always get the impression with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May that beyond all the mucking around they did on the show, they have a deep and lasting love for cars of all kinds, old and new. OK, so given the choice between a new Bugatti Veyron and a clapped out MG, they'd pick the Veyron, but I felt they loved the MG as well. I got that impression to some extent from Matt Leblanc (and later read he initially trained as a mechanic which would bear that out somewhat), but I got the impression that Chris Evans was only interested in the high end sports and super cars..

I have to say I agree. I don't think Chris fits in at all, and while I think Sabine could (she did work quite well the few times she was on Clarkson's Top Gear), I don't think she fits in at the moment. Maybe it's because they haven't got used to each other, and maybe she needs to appear a few more times before she starts to fit in. I don't know.

tweetiepooh 22-06-2016 17:00

Re: [Updated] New BBC Top Gear trailer released

One of the chemistries in the Clarkson ear was that they were 3 men from middle England and so had more opportunity to deride things they didn't like/understand because of gender, race, language, upbringing, culture. Imagine a bemused sort of look at a car that comes in pink.

Much harder to get a banter going if parts of the team are "different". But not impossible, needs a lot more work though, especially with Sabine whose first language isn't English. Just think of you learning a foreign language as an adult, you keep thinking in your home language and its idiom and that like doesn't work in the target language.

One thing I'd change other than gagging Chris is the star in a car. The new format doesn't give the star much focus or time as there are 2 of them and the voting on the best car at different stages in the stars driving history.

3 presenters, not the 5, 6 or 7 it seems to have. It's hemorrhaging viewers still but expect a second series regardless due to the unique way the bbc is funded they can afford to throw 600k down the toilet every episode and not give a toss.

tweetiepooh 22-06-2016 17:51

Re: [Updated] New BBC Top Gear trailer released

They will care if things don't improve but unlike commercial TV they can take more chances (and should do), but there is a point where they won't fund further. On commercial TV if numbers dropped so would funding -> more viewers leaving and so on.

He tweeted: "Stepping down from Top Gear. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that's not enough.

His resignation comes after falling ratings for the show - which hit a series low on Sunday night, with an average of 1.9 million viewers.

Depends on who will be the presenters i liked the original show because of the presenters and the on screen dicking about, there is none of that from what i saw in the first episode. It was all about a guy who shouts allot and has a bad attitude to everyone and everything. End of the day it is still Flop Gear unless they fix the many issues they have.

The Grand Tour looks like the biggest, most exciting version of Top Gear ever

We've seen a tiny bit of Clarkson, Hammond and May's new show, and we were impressed

Wilman whinged about Amazon’s ridiculous tech requirements – 4K, high frame rate, HDR – but the effect is startling. Always adventurous in style, The Grand Tour borders on breath taking. The footage started slow – aerial shots of landscapes around the world, quiet birds in circled flight – but built to a thunderous crescendo. Riding the nose of a Maserati as it swept over a castle’s drawbridge is one of the most exciting pieces of film I’ve seen in the last year. Even if you don’t subscribe to Amazon Prime, you can expect to catch The Grand Tour on every TV at Dixons next year.

I actually like the three presenters they chose. Chris Evans never really fitted in, but I think given time, the current three could have the same chemistry that Clarkson, Hammond and May do. I don't like the idea of 2 extra co presenters though.

This short trailer has more fun in it for me than the whole of the last season with that idiot Evans in it.

RIP Top Gear.

The BBC need to change the format. It's evident they're incapable of mimicking Clarksons format and it was wrong to expect them to do it. Although even with changes its hard to see Top Gear beating this. Absolutely love the idea and I actually think that Trailer looks better than the TG with Clarkson in, as if to say with the massive budget they've made it even better. That trailer was epic, everything I expected and more. Its like one giant Top Gear special of old but a whole season of it.

I prefer Channel 4's Car SOS :D Tim and Fuzz are great presenters and real people get real cars fixed up. Exotic cars and locations are fine in James Bond, but a car show ain't proper unless it has grime.

Amazon are on a winner. I signed up for prime for 1 year and ordered a firestick because of the Grand tour. I wonder how many other's will sign up ?

My cousin and brother have signed up lately while we have been with Prime for over a year now.

That looks like it might actually be good. They have gone back to the format of three guys having a laugh, rather than the approach of the Evans fronted series with many different hosts.

That does actually look good. Hopefully they can pull it back from the last one.

Hopefully they've embraced the fact they're not the old Top Gear.

Well Matt Le Blanc has planned to retire in his 50's.

Plus he is worth overt $60m so doesn't need to work.

What they need to do is have some ex-F1 drivers.

This series of Top Gear was thought to have put the brakes on the show’s decline since the ill-fated one with CHRIS EVANS at the wheel.

But it seems it’s hit the skids again.
The final episode of Top Gear with frontman Matt LeBlanc drew in an all time low for the show

Sunday night’s episode, the final one of the series with MATT LeBLANC drew in an average audience of 1.89million, 10,000 LESS than Evans’ all-time low last year.

An insider said: “Although the series hasn’t had any major issues, it hasn’t attracted the huge numbers it used to.

“This year was all about stability because it is a huge global brand for the Beeb and has to work for them. But the ratings have dropped slightly on the last show which they’re not happy about.”

Doesn't look like they've managed to re-create the old magic.

it definitely got better as it went on, the team starting to "gel" more, although they seem awkward when "chatting" to the star in the car still.

I found Rory annoying to begin with, but I thought the last 2 episodes were very good, and he didn't annoy me :)

I try to watch it but around halfway I find I can't take anymore of LeBlanc or the other two nonentities and have to delete it.

Sure it is better than the Chris Evans shows but if the audience keeps dropping it is ultimately doomed.

I probably won't bother with the next series at all.

Come to think of it The Grand Tour wasn't up to much either.

How is this a Current Affair? It's a poxy TV series about cars that always has been boring no matter who presented it.

It did start as a thread about Clarkson punching the producer which was current affairs news at the time, however the topic has drifted somewhat as events unfolded.

Re: [Updated] New BBC Top Gear trailer released

The old format was 3 middle aged, white, English blokes mucking around and having a good time. The cars were simply a vehicle (sorry) for the show. One of the things that worked was that they were doing stuff that the audience would like to do but don't dare (even if they could afford it). Even the "foreign specials" normally ended up complimenting the country and their people so it was all very tongue in cheek.

The new format hasn't really got that same gelling. They are mixed in nationality, age, race so they can't exactly do the same thing. They do need more time to work out what works and tune things up but the modern audience (and bean counters) are too fickle and easily bored to wait. It may never work of course which would be a shame as it's one of the few programmes my wife and I can watch together.

Quote from The Sun:

Top Gear host Matt LeBlanc dramatically quit the show in a disastrous blow for BBC bosses.

The former Friends star, 50, said he did not want to extend his £1million-a-year contract and the next series will be his last.

He said he was no longer “comfortable” splitting his time between the US and the UK.

His daughter Marina, 14, lives in the States with her mum, LeBlanc’s ex-wife Melissa McKnight, 53.

In addition, his US sitcom Man With A Plan was renewed for a third series.

But a Top Gear source said: “The show will now struggle to remain relevant without a big name at the helm. The Beeb have been left with a headache as a result now.
Viewing figures are down to about 1.5m from a peak of 5.1m at the point Clarkson and co left the show.

Could this be the end?

Re: [Updated] New BBC Top Gear trailer released

Nah the brand is too valuable plus the rating fall probably suggests Le Blanc wasn't the answer anyway. Although ratings for most things have been declining with the rise of streaming.

Re: [Updated] New BBC Top Gear trailer released

Ratings don't matter. Top Gear is a bigger draw overseas now than it was under Clarkson. BBC keep expanding their coverage.

Having hosts drop out all the time does matter. Anything built is instantly lost and all of a sudden you're competing with Doctor Who with cast changes. Essentially having to soft reboot the show each time spells trouble with something like Top Gear. With ratings in the UK not really meaning anything its probably best to take the chance to establish a domestic host/s that see it as a long term project. Doesn't necessarily need to be a superstar host.

Not a fan of the guy but throwing names about, Jack Whitehall. Assuming he ever did get a licence. Then two semi serious blokes. Jenson Button, Ben Collins etc.
