Well whatever your view point we are a culturally and ethnically diverse country. That doesn't even have anything to do with immigration - we're made up of three countries and a bit of another. Diversity is part of our make-up. There's no point burying your head in the sand and pretending we're not at a point in our history where services have to reflect the diverse nature of our population. Personally I can't really draw a distinction between subsidising Hum Europe or subsidising MTV. I watch neither, but there will be people choosing Virgin because of those channels who are heavily subsidising my viewing of Arsenal v. Southampton tonight and I am beyond certain that I've got the better end of the deal!

Yup, well said Andy. It is also worth remembering our past. It is not as if our deepest descendants were all British. We are pretty much just a mixture of many different cultures brought over from different countries. Not even St. George was English.

But don't you keep asking for VM to keep adding channels irrespective of whether they show rubbish content?

I think you should be forced to watch it non stop for twenty four hours :D

IIRC, some local TV stations (for whatever reason) are starting their services on satellite and cable after their Freeview launch. Maybe it's because the Freeview carriage is gifted to them

I doubt they would want to encourage streaming channels from a competitor!

Exactly, like I said earlier, if they aren't preventing English channels from launching due to capacity issues and others aren't expected to pay for them I have no problem with foreign speaking channels.

Unfortunately, there are several in the XL pack that i'm on which means i'm subsidising them. I would expect such channels to be premium add on services, maybe VM have calculated that it draws more asians to the VM platform and/or it encourages them to upgrade to XL and is ultimately more profitable?

I realise that we all effectively subsidise channels that we don't watch, but at least we have the choice to do so if they are in English.

Finally, I do not believe that we are a multicultural country, nor that we should be encouraging this- particularly as the population has never been consulted about this social experiment.

There can only be one culture in any given country, that is not to say that minor cultures should not be tolerated as long as they are not problematic.

Enoch Powell's prediction of "Rivers of blood" has come true, but not quite in the way that he envisaged, but that's for another thread.

Foreign language channels are fine, just as if I visit other countries (I visit Holland as part of my work semi regularly) I am happy to find the BBC channels, in English carried there.

Edit: yikes

It's an app that is said to be coming soon to TiVo Max. It will allow VM customers to access a range of foreign channels/programmes.

As per MB it will have it's own EPG slot (*as opposed to the normal way that TiVo customers access apps).

*I'm not sure how TiVo customers access apps, as I don't have one.

I think making it an app is a great idea. It removes lots of channels from the EPG that won't be of interest to most people but gives cable customers the widest choice of channels.

Side point - the True Movies website has been down since August. As the True channels don't trouble the BARB ratings too much, this will have gone largely unnoticed. Sony now says the new site will be up and running by the end of December.

I can see this channel coming to VM next year:

BroadbandTVNews The International Olympic Committee plans to launch an OTT TV channel as early as 2015, which will be stocked with archive material and some international sports coverage.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the full membership of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Monaco. The OTT channel is part of the Olympic Agenda 2020, which consists of 20+20 recommendations.

I think in general the target demographic for BBC three has access to the internet, whilst the same isn't wholly true of the BBC One audience. I'm not in favour of this, but if you were going to do it to any channel then BBC three is probably the correct one to choose.

Can't see it being giving a full EPG on TiVo - all the Netflix and YouTube channels do is give a way of 'pressing red' to link directly to the apps. I would expect it'll be added to the Connected Red Button service where that is available by the BBC

I have thought this too. I originally thought that it would become a VOD service like Netflix, but as it will be streaming 24 hours a day, what is there to stop VM playing out the online stream via channel 106? They could advertise that they still have BBC3 on linear television!

Can TiVo customers record programmes accessed through an app? If not, this could be another selling point.

Considering the amount of Smart TV's out there, & services like Connect TV, the dissapearance of a linear broadcast channel might not have too much impact.

What a let down with only 4 channels one of which is 'coming soon'. I was expecting more channels than this. I'm hoping for a 'South East Asia' section with channels for my Indonesian wife. Maybe one day?

It would be better if VM could keep BBC3 as a linear service. It could be a selling point/publicity and programmes could be recorded.

Satellite, Freeview and all the hybrid Freeview services wouldn't be able to do this.

If I'm honest, I don't think BBC3 will ever be a major selling point between choosing between VM and a rival. We are not talking about Sky Atlantic or a Sports Channel. I haven't moved to Sky because they have SA, I'm certainly not going to move just because they have BBC 3 as a linear channel.

As someone pointed out, the demographic target audience will have access to the internet if they want to watch a certain programme.

Having a red button option will probably be the way VM will go.

Satellite, Freeview and all the hybrid Freeview services wouldn't be able to do this.

How do you come to this conclusion ?

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 4

YouView allows streaming channels to be part of the epg, and allows recording of them. I am wondering if this is a way for the BBC to park three, but keep it running, and that in the long term it will be available to record again in this way.

Personally I think the way we consume tv is changing, but not towards online as quickly as some think-we're still in the middle of a full blown migration towards time shifting, with the pvr, rather than services such as iPlayer the driver. An awful lot of telly is still watched live. I think BBC three will die if it isn't able to return to an epg at some point in the future. Although the bbc's policy of platform neutrality might scupper that, of course.

I'm inclined to agree. I think we will see a YouTube/Worldbox type portal on channel 106.

Well, as a closed and privately owned system, VM can use their EPG and bandwidth pretty much as they see fit.

On Freeview, extra spectrum would have to be purchased in order to keep BBC3 as the existing bandwidth is to be used for BBC1 +1. The BBC won't want to do this as the whole idea is to save money.

On satellite, as well as the issue of having to rent extra bandwidth, the BBC would also have to pay for EPG inclusions on the two platforms.

Even if they wanted to, Sky aren't allowed to give any given channel more favourable terms regarding EPG costs; they have to be 'Fair, reasonable and non discriminatory'.

It is odd that RT is on satellite and Freeview as a linear channel, but not VM. I can only assume that RT must not be willing to pay what VM want to carry the channel.

Hopefully.. never. It's bad enough that Russians have to suffer the Kremlin's propaganda and "alternate reality" without the rest of the world having to endure it.

The funny thing is, people will list these channels whether they are worth acquiring or not. If the channels in the list were either closed by the operators or added by VM, someone would still find other channels to list. There's a lot of shopping / religious / foreign language channels around and not carried on VM. The bulk of those are also probably not worth acquiring but they are list fodder in waiting.

Yes, they would make it clear if they were charging you. It's probably looking for the package you are on when perusing your account details.

That's actually a dangerous assumption. PINs are primarily there to control access to age-rated content. Some chargeable content can be accessed without entering a PIN, unless you have the Purchase Controls setting enabled on a TiVo.

But as it happens, there is no additional charge for using Worldbox.

Why not just give the channels on WorldBox real channels numbers?

Or is Worldbox run by the 3rd party?

  • It saves bandwidth. The channels are only sent to people who are actually watching them.
  • It saves channels. Not an issue while there are only four, but would be if increased to hundreds.
  • Since they are TiVo-only, they can be encoded with high-efficiency codecs that the older boxes can't support.

Is this IPTV service something that VM are going to continue doing, or is this just a one off for these obscure channels?

It seems odd to me that after all the time it took to merge ntl and telewest together and bring their channel selections into alignment, we might be on the verge of having different channel lineups depending on what box you have.

If its a case of VM saying, if you want more HD or other great channels, you will need to get tivo (for those codecs), fair enough. I can understand VM wanting to push their tivo product and get rid of older boxes. But I don't understand why they might be moving into a world of different channel lineups, depending on what box you have, just for obscure channels.

As they are niche channels, it's prbably better for them to be in an app instead of taking up space on the EPG.

Just a heads up for those who listen to Gold, the radio channel. From today it is no longer on 959 but 923. Not sure if any other channels have moved around.

I imagine this trend will continue. In the very long term, I expect everything to be IPTV.

It's inevitable. It isn't realistic to expect 15-year old boxes to support the same level of service as modern ones.

Besides, this isn't a new thing. Lots of the boxes don't support the HD channels.
