Someone did PM me early this week and said Summer for Sky Sports HD and Early 2015 for both Sky Sports News HD and Sky News HD.

Looks like this could be another attempt by Turner to get back into the FTA market. I say 'get back' as, like many of us, the former head of Turner hated Sky and, despite the monetary loss, refused to join the Sky Multichannels package. For many, many years Cartoon Network and TNT were broadcast FTA.

A slightly confused view of what actually happened when Freeview started. Actually, the BBC / Crown Castle bid for the multiplexes had originally pencilled in a channel made up of CNN / TCM and Boomerang, this channel never happened. Presumably, carriage terms for this channel weren't agreed.

CBM was owned by a Midlands based media company, not by Turner, and carried a placeholder on Freeview for a number of months. CBM had planned to include a strand from Bloomberg in their content. After several months, the channel failed to appear and Crown Castle cancelled the contract with CBM. CBM subsequently announced plans for another Freeview channel with free sports content, which also failed to appear.

I would love to have True Movies 2 on VM, as well as True Drama - these are FREE channels. I cannot see it though.

Not the way VM treats its customers. They will take channels off to accomdate them.

So tell me if you can get BT Sports free on Sky Arthur and the answer to that is no unless you want to pay £15 more.

Thanks for the info. It did seem odd that they would jump the gun and allow a placeholder before terms had even been agreed!

I use a Free To Air (FTA) satellite box for anything I want to see on a FTA channel not on VM, though I do feel that one shouldn't need to.

I believe that a TiVo offering that comprises of all Freeview and Freesat channels would be a popular service.

If I was running Sky, I wouldn't let VM have the channels until after the World Cup to be honest. Events like the World Cup are huge sellers for HD television and if a punter wanted to finally bite the bullet and get HD, which service looks better right now?

didnt they say a year ago a channel (i cant remember what one) was due to launch by spring and i just remember posts on here saying "isnt spring now over technically?" and people giving definitions of spring.

I think basically VM say things like "by summer" and dont follow any definition but it gives them basically a 3 month period to do whatever they want and then can keep referring people back to the "by summer" tagline.

MalteseFalcon 16-05-2014 08:52

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

But I thought that only BBC and ITV had the live rights to games, both of which offer HD anyway (free, or if not free, certainly at a substantial reduction of what sports and HD sub would be anyway), so SKY Sports in HD would not be much of a deal breaker for those wanting World Cup games in HD. And anyway, I imagine any World Cup games SKY show would be on the already available HD sports channels, 1 and 2.

---------- Post added at 09:52 ---------- Previous post was at 09:51 ----------

Yes, looking at Wiki the live broadcasting rights are for BBC and ITV only, so there will only be highlights on SKY.

I wonder if any tv companies will fill the void left by ESPN Classic in the near future? Pitch International Ltd hold quite a few rights and produced plenty of programs for ESPN, Maybe there is a gap in the market for them to produce a TV channel in the near future.......

ncfc1902 16-05-2014 09:10

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

Sky Sports don't have the rights to the World Cup at all. All live games and highlights are on BBC and ITV.

It was a quality channel ESPN classic no idea why they shut it down to be honest. The quality of the shows went down a bit near the end but still a lot of good stuff.

I'd imagine BT and sky would go for the programs but i can't see BT myself as they're more pre occupied with their live rights which is why they shut down espn classic.

Sky sports classic would be a great channel though. Does anyone know if sky sports keep the right to show all their old football matches from the early 90s or do they revert back to the premier league after the contract is up? Sky would have so much stuff from classic football matches etc. If they made a channel entirely for F1 surely sky sports classic is a possibility...it'll probably be $ly exclusive though

ESPN's European TV operations shut down completely so that's why the three ESPN channels: ESPN Classic, ESPN America and ESPN UK closed. BT took up ESPN's rights and licensed the brand for a new ESPN channel.
With the popularity of services like YouTube, I think ESPN Classic also suffered from declining viewing figures.

I'm not entirely convinced that the Movie Max, referred to by MB, has any connection with Movie Mix on Freeview. In any event, it appears from Cellcast's press release, that Cellcast have sold the rights to their Movie Mix channel to Sony. In which case, I would expect the Freeview channel to morph into More>Movies at some point.

http://www.cellcast.tv/html/news/arc...27-03-14b.aspx

Further to the above: The Ofcom licence for this channel now lists "Media Mix (UK) Limited" as the licensee and contacts have changed from Square 1 Management to Sony Pictures Europe House.

When VM started they said that, to keep things simple, they were only going to have M, L and XL TV packages. As time went on they had to change strategy in order to offer more products, like M+.

Looks like LG are set to scrap this system entirely and go back to naming packages in the more traditional manner.

In which case, I would expect the Freeview channel to morph into More>Movies at some point.

Further to the above: The Ofcom licence for this channel now lists "Media Mix (UK) Limited" as the licensee and contacts have changed from Square 1 Management to Sony Pictures Europe House.

Thanks for the extra info/insight.

Good research. Movie Max looks to be a Dutch DVD postal rental service. www.moviemax.nl

In other news, the German version of Universal Channel is now coming to sister UPC companies in Austria and Switzerland. Knowing LGI's intentions to standardise content, is this an indication that Universal Channel HD may be on its way to VM soon?http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2014/...d-switzerland/

Yes, I saw that site but preferred not to speculate. Considering VMs policy of making third party content available through TiVo, this would, however, seem more likely than the Freeview connection.

According to the met office summer is those months, but traditionally, summer is the period between the summer solstice, 21st June, and the autumn equinox, 22nd September.

More importantly, both are after Monaco!

I must admit that I very rarely watch them, but they can be useful for some people eg the disabled.

Those that can't wait until the new channel launches can countdown here :D

Maybe I've cottoned onto something. Smallworld are having an overhaul on June 2nd. It may be a mammoth of a task but what are the odds of VM launching the new sky sports channels then?

Just a thought. :-)

Possibly useful to the disabled but for the moment this is a channel, proposing to provide only 1 hour of programming for 2 nights a week as an opt-out of another shopping channel. The Mall itself doesn't even have a 24/7 broadcasting schedule.

It's a tad optimistic for a channel, only providing 2 hours of output per week, to be suggesting that they hope to expand to Freeview and Virgin Media. There's a lot of other shopping channels on Sky, the first hurdle they have to clear is actually being noticed. It remains to be seen whether or not they will stand out from the crowd.

Considering the relatively small size of Smallworld compared to VM as a whole, it wouldn't really make sense to schedule new channel launches around whatever is happening there.

If my memory is correct, Media Boy advised that this is LGI's intention. Whilst I've not seen anything from LGI itself, I've not looked for it. It makes commercial sense to me.

The Content Acquisition teams are already merged, but shared content only makes sense for markets with similar culture and language, e.g. UK/Ireland, Germany/Austria/Switzerland, and Belgium/Netherlands.

I can't see much call for Romanian channels in Puerto Rico ;)

That's what I was thinking. Maybe MB meant standardisation between VM, UPC and Smallworld?

Interesting, they did say that some content would be cable exlusive. BFBS radio is on DAB, don't think it's on VM though.

I do wonder if the TV version will be encrypted to all but forces personnel though. An ex army person once told me that (due to rights issues) there were large notices outside the TV recreation room stating that non army employees were forbidden from watching the channel dedicated to the armed forces.

Our own Sirius and Hugh are ex forces, I wonder if they or any other members who are ex military can confirm this?

Indeed. Obviously rights issues are a stumbling block to pan-European channels.
I was thinking that if they get eg Universal Channel HD Germany for the German-speaking countries then they would get a better deal on eg Universal Channel HD in English for UK, Ireland.

Information TV on Sky and Freesat shows British Forces News at 6.30 daily so maybe the new channel will just do this and LGI is providing carriage on a non-commercial basis?

They are a charity, but pay their way. Any profits are used to help in the welfare provision of forces personnel.

Of course, it could be on a non-commercial basis as you say eg if LG have been caught up in the 'Help For Heroes' campaign or are doing it as a PR exercise.

Given that I've read the government are struggling to recruit as many 'territorial' replacements for 'full time' forces personnel as they want. Isn't this more likely to be a recruitment channel?
