Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
Honest answer? Because that's not what Virgin Media have decided it will be.
|
Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
That's not an answer, that's a restatement of the question.
It's quite obvious he wants to know why they decided not what they decided. |

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
I was hoping for 15 up but I knew it was still going to be 12 & no one forced me to change to 152 - At times I think back to the good old days of 16 years or more ago with needing two phone lines & dial-up along with £700+ home phone bills a quarter & still having to pay just to have a ISP - For me internet has never been as cheap in actual cost & if I consider how much £700 would be today more so!
Having 152 has had the required effect on friends who don't get fibre yet & really, really annoyed them with bells on  |
Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
Thought I'd chance my arm yesterday, so gave retentions a ring to try and get my 30 to 50MB upgrade early. I was stung into action by some VM leaflets pushed through the door advertising 50MB as their lowest tier - so presumably my neighbour could get it straight away.
All went well initially, but they needed to transfer to their 'Broadband team' to sort it. As soon as i got a crackly line and an Indian voice who didn't have a clue what I was on about I knew it was a doomed attempt. Dare say i can wait a couple of months and the difference between 30 and 50 MB will be negligible in everyday use. It was a slight upgrade in upload speed I was more interested in. |

I really think it is a bit of a lottery. Many staff in sales go by what they have been told - the roll out schedule. Those with a bit of common-sense realise that they cannot decently refuse current customers on 120Mb from having 152Mb when their next-door neighbour can have it for a few pounds less on a new contract. Keep trying and insist that you are happy to be re contracted. You will get better telephone and a reduction of at least £5.00 for 18 months. |

Serious problem in my area with very high utilisation and virgin media say it won't be fixed within 3 months later and told me I had to stay with below 2Meg for now. I only signed up 152 Meg a week ago, oh great, I cannot cancel it now as it went pass over 7 days cooling off period. Wish I never went back with Virgin Media.

I phoned them up and they say I was under 28 days as I only signed up on 28th February as they say 7 days cooling off period is incorrect. Should be 28 days. So, I put a 30 days notice in and they give me one month free until my disconnection next month April 10th. So, no charges at all as a goodwill gesture applied by manager. As the manager are aware of high utilisation in my area and apology to me.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
I find it incredibly difficult to believe that a network area would deliver 160Mb 24x7 then drop abruptly to being so congested it goes to delivering less than 2Mb with no increase in latency and spontaneously dives back up to peak performance almost instantly.
In any event as per with this poster the biggest fools are Virgin Media for apparently letting the guy sign up / disconnect / regrade over and over again alongside allowing him to use the CEO's office as his call centre and apparently never charging him early disconnection fees even when he is actually liable for them. Makes a mockery of the rest of the customer base allowing one customer who has probably never made the company a profit to use resources like that and they need to grow a pair and put the address down as to not be serviced. Back to the actual thread rather than the chronic derailment I have seen a few instances actually of people with genuine congestion on the 152Mb / 100Mb as their areas aren't quite ready yet, more on the VM community forum than here. The take home message seems to be that VM have completely screwed up and the marketing people wanted to wave their epeen at BT before the network was ready. Rather than doing a controlled roll out they've been stupid enough to annoy brand new customers by having them sign up then find out they can't hit the levels of performance they've been sold, annoy some existing customers through having them recontract then realise they can't hit the new speeds, and annoy others when they see they are waiting for tiers of performance that new customers are getting straight away. I can't think of any other cable company that behaves in the manner VM do with regards to tier uplifts, indeed I have seen cable companies announce uplifts after they've started to deploy them. At some point VM may actually get it together and announce tier uplifts when they are ready to go, rather than well in advance for marketing purposes, or if they absolutely must announce them only releasing them into the field when the networks are ready to go. Then again a light aircraft may be brought down by flying porcine creatures. |

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
Thanks Virgin Media for three months free broadband with 152Meg :) first month of 152Mb is free, the next two more months is £47.00 (free) out of -£54.53 and after that, the bill will be left over with in credit of -£7.53. They offer me three months free of charge and removed 12 months contract. And they had admitted that it was high utilisation in my area and the fix could be within 3 months. They also asked me to ring back if there is no fix time as I have two option choices, leave or they could give me a further free of charge. They admitted that a staff shouldn't have upgraded me to 152Mb as a mistake because of problem ongoing with 152Mb in Telford area.
Oh well, at least I got three months free! :) https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2014/03/26.jpg |

From the optical node, effectively everyone is on the same coax cable (Think of it as "WiFi over coax"). Sharing connections only causes problems if there is not high enough signal level in the drop cable to drive both installations.

When I phoned to get my 100Mb upgrade the retentions guy actually offered to swap my V+ box for a Tivo and we swapped the normal V box upstairs to the V+ box, they reduced our bill by around £15 a month and swapped our Super Hub to a Super Hub 2, we did have to pay a £49.95 install charge but considering the monthly saving and the fact we got a Tivo it seemed worth it.
Wasn't even expecting them to swap the Super Hub since there was no mention of it when I talked to the guy in retentions, he even asked if I already had a Super Hub which I had. |

Managed to do a proper speed test today without the wife hogging the connection. This is using the closest server, which is a VM hosted one in Baguley:
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2014/03/29.png And because people will complain about using a VM hosted speedtest server, here's the result from the Namesco server in London: https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2014/03/30.png I always seem to get slightly higher upload speeds on that server but it's the one people seem to trust the most. EDIT: Hang on a second. Post complaining of congestion on here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/35679382-post625.html 10-03-2014, 23:46 Post complaining of congestion on Plusnet: http://community.plus.net/forum/inde...,124744.0.html « on 10/03/2014, 21:03 » No sign of higher latency despite congestion being apparently so high it was delivering sub-2Mb, then once it was mentioned latency mysteriously goes higher. I have to wonder whether this guy was using QoS on a router and when that was pointed out moved to saturating the link as much as possible. That or a client side issue. Seems all too coincidental and the TBB graph doesn't really work for me, congestion isn't latency-less and on downstream only one minute then heavily affecting both directions and inducing high latency the next. EDIT 2: The Plusnet TBB meter doesn't really work for me either. Big burst of latency for about half an hour starting at pretty much exactly 9pm which drops abruptly, like a download finishing, rather than ramping up and ramping down slowly as congestion comes and goes. That and Plusnet reporting zero other issues on the exchange. They will have other customers there, they have a 5% market share. EDIT 3: I was evidently too trusting. Quote:
