Just to back up the statement on my blog, posted in good faith, about Sky staff being told not to promote Sky Atlantic as a Sky exclusive. Here's the original post in the previous Coming Soon thread here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/35...-post1804.html and there were two similar posts at the same time over on Digital Spy forums. I also asked a Sky rep I know and she said that they were no longer promoting it as a Sky exclusive.

Many are also Highly regarded, award winning shows.

For some unknown reason Sky have also chosen to put some US Network shows on Atlantic, which really belong on Sky One or Living, but that doesn't detract from the original premise of the type of specialised content Atlantic was set up for.

One of the reasons that Atlantic is sought by many on VM is that Atlantic is the only place to get these US cable shows. Netflix and Lovefilm will often get the US network shows eventually, but Atlantic is the only place that I am aware of to get HBO shows. And before anyone says Blinkbox, that is way too expensive in my view.

You're fine Harry.

Alas, I do not know enough about US network TV and how it works, so I will take your word for it.
The only point(s) I will make is that SA can (for the reasons you have stated) show a wider range of shows and genres than other specialist genre channels, giving SA a distinct advantage over many other channels.

In my eyes, if SA was truly "specialist", it would only show US cable content (is that the correct terminology?). I imagine this would mean it would show much less original content, and therefore less coveted.

If I follow your reasoning correctly (happy to be corrected) a channel like Alibi will never be able to show (for example) "The Following", thus being denied the chance to show original content. I only mention Alibi and original content in response to Alibi being highlighted as a channel which had it's amount of original content compared to the amount of SA's original content.

It's great that a channel can air these shows, I just think it's unfair to claim SA is a "specialist" channel in comparison to channels like Alibi which deals in one genre only, and, following my understanding of your post (which may be wrong) seemingly has it's hands tied over what it can and can not show.

I agree SA is coveted by many, but that are plenty that do not care for it either.

.

Sky hasn't restricted Atlantic to just US shows - much of their homemade drama has been tucked away on the "exclusive to Sky" channel too. Adam Buxton's BUG; Hit and Miss; The British; This is Jinsy; Walking and Talking - all original Sky Productions, and more to follow in the coming season.
Passingbat's correct that the HBO and AMC shows don't appear on UK Netflix and LoveFilm, nor iTunes for that matter, but they do appear on Tesco's BlinkBox service and in HD too, shortly after they finish showing the full season on SA. Game of Thrones seasons 1-3 and Boardwalk Empire et al are all there. Blinkbox can be accessed via PS3, XBox 360, and the newer LG, Toshiba, Philips and Samsung smart TVs. I've tried it on the iPad - it works okay, but is iTunes pricey - £17.99 for a season in SD, £23.99 in HD. More info at http://www.blinkbox.com/

Yes it is a very interesting read and Virgin will have to be nifty on his feet in the coming years to cope with the threat of the big content owners who hold many of the aces and one wonders what plans Virgin have got to cope with a ever increasingly changing market.

This morning I received a letter from the CEO's office in response to my complaint.

There was nothing new just a rehash of previous statements and some of it out of date, i.e. ESPN still available up to 31st July.

They have given me a number to call if I have any more questions, I just need to quote reference number. I'll call them later.

Aside from the obvious, does anyone have any questions?

:)

We're probably talking semantics here but although Alibi specialises in crime dramas, it is not the only channel that shows crime dramas. Universal has Law and Order SVU, Channel 5 has Person of Interest and The Mentalist. These are just a few of the crime dramas spread across other channels. Only Atlantic has the main HBO shows, which to me makes it a specialist channel. It doesn't have all the US cable TV shows, and I believe there are two HBO shows still on Fox because they already had the rights (True Blood and Eastbound & Down). But the fact that they have the vast majority of HBO shows makes it a specialist channel in my eyes, irrespective of the other shows they also put on the channel. I don't think anyone in the US would think that the actual HBO channel that they are able to subscribe to, is not a specialist channel.

Yes, why do you keep bombarding VM with e-mails when you already know the answer (ie, in talks, will let you know when there's anything to report)?

I know you want some news, we all do, but until the deal is done, e-mailing them is pointless (as your latest response confirms).

Well when I asked you if you'd eat your pants if we did get Sky Atlantic this autumn, you didn't say you wouldn't! It's the least I'd expect from someone so committed to this view without actually having any evidence to support it!;)

My compliant was about the lack of communication and patronizing comment about getting our fix from Eurosport and about my suggestion that customers get given the choice to pay extra for content such as Premier Sports and BT rather than have no choice as VM attempt to hold out (and not get) better deals.

I think that was worth a reply from VM, even if you don't.

It's not patronising though, it's true! I really don't know what you expect from Virgin until the negotiations with BT are concluded or in advance of a period of contractual confidentiality.

Write to them if you must, but you are wasting your time. We'll know soon enough.

What's making me laugh is that VM or Liberty Global have still not answered my email about BT Sport.

IF, they are controlled by the stock exchange or whatever. At the end of the day its still US, that has to foot the bill.

They have also introduce another Asian channel to the network, do the staff at VM go home at night with a plaster stuck over there mouth or do they sign the official act.

SIX DAYS TO GO.

Given the confidentiality of the discussions, what are you expecting them to say, Arthur? You already know the answer, we have told you on more than one occasion. Just be patient. My guess is that it will be broadcasting on VM by Saturday. If not, you'll have to watch it at the pub!

So why are you so concerned about it not being on Virgin Media? It's sometimes difficult to understand you, Arthur. You are getting so emotional over something that won't even affect you.

The answer you are looking for is that the most likely result of the negotiations is that it will be on VM by Saturday, and I suspect it will be part of the XL or VIP pack. Can't say any more than that at present.

You really need to change the record. You have been told countless times that commercial confidentiality is at play here. No amount of email or posts from you will change the fact that both companies hands will be tied by stock exchange rules.

It's business and both VM and BT will try to negotiate what is best for their shareholders & their customers...in that order, no matter if you think that is not right. The shareholders come first when a company is publicly quoted.

I will repeat again, I am 100% certain that VM/BT Sport will announce something before the end of the week...in time for the first game on Saturday. But, if not by the end of the week, I'm sure something will be done soon, as BT will realise that they need the VM customer base that WILL undoubtedly subscribe and I will be one of them.

Some people won't be happy until VM email them a progress report and summary of what has been discussed after every meeting between VM & BT / any other party. That's just not going to happen...

I have just had a email saying:

"We are still in talks and stopping at 8 and going for a meal, couple of drinks and then maybe on to a club. They said that they will be back round the table at 9AM (dependent at what time We leave the club)"

The trouble is to keep up to date with all American sports via other means is very expensive. I shall keep SS for the NFL and Basketball, and I shall have to find other means to keep up with MLB and the NHL. I believe that Eurosport will be showing the Notre Dame NCAA Football games.

I agree

id imagine the reason it hasn't been agreed so far is

VM: "Yeah lets put it in XL like we did with ESPN?"
BT: "Nah..."
VM: "But you joined us in court action to fight sky about the injustice of withholding sports from customers?"
BT: "Yeah but we're hypocritical?"
VM: "Oh"
BT: "Yeah."
VM: "So....?"
BT "15 quid a month"
VM: "Nah?! that's way too expensive!"
BT: "12 quid"
VM: "Be reasonable?"
BT "Nah"
VM: But we were fighting sky sports before? Come on! XL?"
BT: "but we have the tv rights now and don't care about your customers but our own wallets. So nah. 12 quid a month"
VM: "How about in the XL?"
BT: "Nah 12 quid"

(Repeat every day)

Write to them if you must, but you are wasting your time. We'll know soon enough.

It is patronizing, I compared it to telling a First class passenger there was no longer seat available but they could get their fix of airline travel on an economy seat. Insensitivity and lack of empathy with customers rings to mind.

Anyway my complaint was not about the lack of channel but their communication process. Even with confidentially they can at least still update customers (in particular those like me who signed up for updates) to say there is no news. Rather than having to phone up for updates or get them from BT.

In particular I mentioned the recent silence over Premier Sports (surely no confidentially now) and my feedback about paying more for premium content.

I don't think giving feedback about communication and willing to pay more for certain content was a wasted exercise. If enough customers write to VM to tell them they would pay more perhaps they may revisit talks with PS if they thought their was interest.

Whatever the case I am going to get BT sports in order to follow the MLB and rugby (no fix available for this on Eurosport) and if moving is the only option available I will reluctantly move. I'm just sitting it out for a few more days.

BT Sport Virgin Media wholesale deal "close"

Reuters is reporting that a deal between BT Sport and Virgin Media is "close"

Quote:

Separately, a person familiar with the situation said the group was close to agreeing a wholesale deal with cable operator Virgin Media (LBTYA.O). Any wholesale deal would increase the number of viewers watching the channels, and allow BT to charge more to advertisers.

Alwaysabear, is the NBA confirmed as being on SS next year? It's my main deciding factor about what to do before the season starts and I haven't been able to find any information yet.

How do Reuters know? Why is it leaked to Reuters and not to customers? Hmm at least it's being reported by a decent newsource and not that media website posted the other day!

Fingers crossed eh.

Good post!

I have to say I also cannot find any confirmation of TV rights for next season. That will teach me to assume, I should know better if the NFL is anything to go by will not get confirmation until the week before the season starts who will be carrying the games. Thank God that SS signed a three year deal with the NFL at the beginning of last season.

Fair enough PB, I think this could rumble on and on. If it's okay with you, I would like to agree to disagree!:)
